My office is asking everyone to allow our IT dept to add our company server to our home computer/laptops in case we have to go to quarantine and work from home. That starts tomorrow.
A good friend has a personal care attendant that called out today with vomiting and “a high fever” I shared my company policy “doctors note before coming back to work” - fortunately he has 2 other caregivers but still a concern. I also suggested he (50, disabled) self quarantine until the doctors note.
Well, a Scarsdale Middle School faculty member tested positive and all Scarsdale, NY (Westchester) schools are closed through March 18th in, as the release said, an abundance of caution. My confidence level that my son’s wedding on 3/21 occurs without issue is dropping like a stone.
Both REI and Target were very busy this afternoon. Target had water but very little TP.
Hotels in Indian Wells have vacancies again. 6 in my group have cancelled out of 10 for the tennis tournment there. It will be interesting to see how many vacant seats there will be next weekend.
Meanwhile, went to Costco today in south Florida and they had plenty of wipes, gloves and aTP. Saw two customers wearing gloves. It wasn’t nearly as crowded as it usually is on Sundays. I was at the Apple Store yesterday – saw a few employees wearing gloves. One of them was rubbing his nose with his gloved hand
Costco had both 5 tubs of Clorox wipes and the Kirkland brand of wipes in stock when they opened the other morning. I bought both.
The Clorax wipes have 0.184% strength ingredients and the Kirkland has 0.14% strength.
The Costco employee said the Kirkland wipes are good for use on your swifter attachment as they are an appropriate size for it.
To spare my hands and save gloves, I use the plastic bags the newspaper comes in when I’m using the wipes, to protect my hands. I can and do wash my hands when I’m done.
My husband flew to London this evening out of Dulles. He said his flight was only 30% full.
For the most part, so far, it seems people are going about their new business. We met my husband’s college roommate and his wife for dinner Friday night. They were in town for their son’s lacrosse game. The bar/restaurant was full, like any other Friday night. Today was the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade and while I didn’t go, it looked fairly well attended as it was a beautiful day.
Both of my kids’ colleges have sent out emails that they are looking in to possibility of online learning but no decisions have been made so far. My daughter’s spring break ends today and finals aren’t until the end of May so still has most of her semester left. My son starts spring break next Friday - he is bringing home all his textbooks, laptop, etc just in case they decide to keep campus closed. I’m not sure my daughter’s school will end up doing online classes but if they do, she will stay where she is (off campus apartment) rather than come home. She is across the country.
Our United Way charity event at the mall tonight was packed. Food samples and drinks everywhere. Coronavirus nightmare, but I was careful not to touch my face or other people. We shall see. It was fun, though. No one seemed concerned. I did an elbow bump when I ran into a co-worker. Apparently we are looking into having our whole corporate office work from home for a trial day to see how it works.
What am I doing to prepare? Well, at work, I am trying to make an online curriculum friendly enough that parents can work with their children if we have to close school for a prolonged period!
We are washing our hands more vigilantly, and using hand sanitizer as soon as we leave a public building. We force ourselves not to touch our faces until we get home. (Due to my husband’s medical issues, we have appointments almost everyday M-F.). I’m using antibacterial wipes on the doorknob and garage door opener that we touch before washing our hands in warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds. Wipes are also used on phones and watches. We carry tissues to open doors and press elevator buttons.
I am very worried about our daughter’s wedding in Barcelona in June. Not only are we in the age group that would have been asked not to fly if the government had not asked CDC to retract that order, but my husband’s cardiac issues put him at high risk. Hoping for a miracle so we can still attend.
We went to the US vs. Spain women soccer She believes cup, the entire stadium was packed, we paid $250 each for our tickets and apparently it’s all sold out! Everyone had a good time and we won!
We ate breakfast at home but went out for brunch and dinner to the local restaurants. Mr’s rationale: enjoy while you can. Either we will be locked down eating out of the freezer or the restaurants go belly up or both. Hope neither, but we are eating out pre-emptively. .
Reminds me of a conversation I had with someone whose dad had a new doctor. New doc asked about quality of life and dad said pretty good but really missed the foods he used to be able to eat. Doc said you are 93, how much extra time do you really think that will add? If you want the steak and want salt on it then that’s what you should eat.
By all means people should be cautious with this virus, especially the elderly and health compromised. But I think you made a wise choice in this case. I hope in the future my kids would do the same.
I am trying to decide if I should go to a routine Dr appointment on Tuesday and if I should go to a lecture (more than 1000 in audience) that night. I’m 69 with a history of asthma but otherwise in good shape.
