I don’t fear getting sick. I do worry about people being afraid of other people. I hope we can take reasonable precautions but not ostracize or discriminate against other people.
Allergies, some blood pressure medicines, and GERD all can cause coughs too.
Four cases in my state. Four very small high schools around me won their sectionals last weekend. Basketball is a big deal in this state. It’ll be interesting to see if attendance is down at regionals, but I highly doubt that will occur.
Has anyone heard if the SAP/Sapphire conference in Orlando is still on? (Their website says so, but I wonder if that’s just the party line… as its HUGE and there are a lot if international attendees.
Carnival may be based in the US, but all of the Carnival-branded cruise ships fly other flags (Panama, Bahamas, Malta). The Carnival company owns several other cruise lines, including Holland America, Princess, and Seabourn which are based in the US, but have no US-flagged ships.
Ah, I can understand that. I am someone who has to watch out for illness each winter on a regular basis so I’m just more of the mindset of protecting myself from getting sick. Certainly I never want to offend people and have ended up sick plenty of times because I didn’t want to make another person feel badly. I can’t afford to behave that way with this virus and my personal health, so will be bowing out as politely as I can from various things. Certainly I wouldn’t want to ostracize or discriminate against anyone. I just had a week at home with the flu and suspect I got it from a coworker who had it and stayed home only 2 days and was around me and then told me she had just had the flu. Or another who had a fever and was talking to me all day and then told me at the end of the day she had a fever. I don’t want to make them feel bad but I would have appreciated the heads up and think maybe I wouldn’t have gotten sick if I had known to stand back a bit from them.
Ugh…Heads up for United travelers. While I realized airlines are hemorrhaging money right now, this does not sit well with me. And I’m guessing once the corona virus epidemic passes, United will just keep the policy.

I understand, Suteiki77. I live in a state with only two confirmed cases so far, and I have been standing at a distance from coworkers, keeping my hands off my face, washing my hands frequently, and hoping very strongly that everyone I know is doing the same. One of my family members posted something today on social media along the lines of, “I’ll touch my face as much as I want,” and frankly, if this person weren’t such a close relative, I might have said something. I think we all need to take precautions, not only to protect ourselves but also to protect others; not only for coronavirus but for all communicable diseases.
So, I realized just now that I’m feeling sorry for myself. As I said, I’m not very worried about getting sick myself. But my children live far from here, one on each coast, in virus hot spots. I don’t know when I’ll be able to see them again. I know, not the biggest deal amid all the things going on.
@ucbalumnus I am aware of that from our posts. The carriers based in the USA have thousands of support personnel and ancillary service providers. Any govt intervention to support these companies and by extension their employees, vendors, suppliers and their families is ok by me. I only said usa based in my initial post to represent these firms and not the global industry. What flag the actual ship flys has more to do with insurance, portage and other issues not the tax paying parent company imho.
Do you all think this could cancel May commencements?
Rosered55, that is a big deal. Very understandable to feel that way. This won’t last forever. Things will go back to normal eventually.
I think it is nice you are so careful in order to protect others. I think many normally don’t think about how going out when sick can impact others who are more vulnerable to illness.
Yep, seems they are at risk.
I was under the assumption of why they fly other flags (and hire non-US workers is partly because of the working conditions and low pay. Pretty crappy conditions even without the risk of Covid-19.
I made a Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s run today. Whole Foods wasn’t doing any of its normal cheese sampling. Trader Joe’s was still sampling.
How much longer, if at all, do you think college a in different regions will continue having tours and events? There are a few we had hoped to see. One he can see soon. The other night be virtual tour.
@doschicos that could be. Not sure. I always assumed it was related to maritime issues. Like the merchant marine ships and they certainly have very high pay, but not sure on conditions etc.
Do you all think this could cancel May commencements?
I hope not!
In guessing we will not have an in person graduation. If we do i will likely be stressed about the safety of attending given health issues. Doc told me to stay out of crowds.

What flag the actual ship flys has more to do with insurance, portage and other issues not the tax paying parent company imho.
Also, what labor laws (including hours worked and ability to work based on citizenship and visa status) and expectations (e.g. pay and benefits) the ship needs to follow. Given how labor-intensive running a floating hotel with restaurants and other facilities is (about 1 crew member for every 2.5 guests), that is probably a big factor in deciding what flag to fly, outweighing the inconvenience of needing more than one country in the itinerary.
In terms of taxes, Carnival Corporation paid $70 million in income taxes on $3.06 billion of income before taxes in 2019, according to page F-2 (52 on the PDF) of https://www.carnivalcorp.com/static-files/ddd975ba-cef0-43fe-9bf9-bb4c376ed914 . Not all of the income tax is to the US, according to pages F-17 and F-18.
@doschicos here’s an article I found.

It seems that it’s both portage fees, taxes and workplace regulations as you mentioned. They are known as “flags of convenience” and seem to have started during prohibition. It’s also why carriers don’t go from USA port to USA port. Interesting.
Glad you and @ucbalumnus brought it up. Learned something new.
Like Dr. Fauci, I’m not into cruises. No interest. But for those who are, do realize the crappy conditions the crew (absent the Captain and officers) work/live in. Tip them well.
