@partyoffive. My patients daughter was told she has 5 days to get out of her dorm at MIT. That’s how it works. My patient just got the information today and has to figure out what she is going to do this weekend. Crazy!
Basic chemistry question: what is the final concentration of Isopropyl alcohol in the final sanitizer? Answer: below the recommended 60%. You need to start with 95-100% alcohol (ethyl or isopropyl) to make an effective sanitizer.
My family gives me a huge amount of grief because I always have at least a half case of Everclear around. (And yes, when you buy a case of Everclear, the liquor store clerk does give you the side-eye.) I keep it because it makes the best liqueurs of anything I’ve tried. Limoncello made with Everclear is glorious - much better than if you use Vodka as the base. But really any liqueur made with Everclear has a clean crispness that really carries the flavor of whatever you’re infusing.
Anyway, they’re not teasing me about my stash of Everclear now! It’s like our own dual purpose backup plan. If the sanitizers run out first, we sanitize with Everclear. If the sanitizers are readily available, we use the Everclear to drown our sorrows. Win/win.
Every school I’ve seen that is asking students to move out now…is making arrangements for international students or students who can’t get to their homes now to stay on campus until the end if the term.
The Archdiocese of San Francisco has closed all 90 of it’s Catholic schools in SF, San Mateo and Marin counties. That’s 10 preschools, 27 elementary schools and seven high schools closed from now until March 25. They’ve had one custodian and one student test positive.
We are calling some close friends and asking them not to attend the memorial services for my dad because of covid19 and virus risks In flying snd large gatherings.
My mom, H and I are considering not attending the services and perhaps only the burial and meal following it.
Mom is 90, H is nearing 80, and I am over 60 with severe chronic lung disease.
My sister (>60) is running fever and has a sore throat now. She was with mom for many hours yesterday.
When my Aunt passed away and my mom didn’t want to come north because of the cold weather - we FaceTimed the service so she could be a part of it in at least a small way.
If rubbing alcohol is 70% alcohol, you could just use rubbing alcohol. Put it in a spray bottle and spray as is. Hand sanitizer has 70% alcohol. It will be a bit harsh but it doesn’t last long. Of course, mixing and making is fun!
If the service is at a house of worship or funeral home, it may be possible to live stream it. This arrangement was made when a classmate of mine died, and many from out of town wanted to be there and couldn’t be. Their house of worship did a live stream.
I’m sorry that these logistics are difficult, but you will be able to honor your dad in a personal way at some point.
The health and well being if your family and friends is important.
I work for a mid sized university in the medical school. In addition to main campus classes being cancelled for the next couple of weeks they have banned all university travel internationally and domestically until the end of the fiscal year - June 30! Wow.
Also - this one hurt - and those of you with current or past medical students will appreciate it. Match Day ceremonies- this year, March 20 - cancelled. This day is the pinnacle of four years of medical school. They will announce how 4th years will receive their info and will look to make it “special” but what a bummer for this years class to not get the excitement that is Match Day.
5 days is a lot of time to move out! My daughter packed all her stuff in a couple of hours. She is flying back tonight. For selfish reason I am so happy she is home!!! ?
Michigan now has 2 cases today… Agh… Hope it stays away from University of Michigan… Just dropped him off this weekend. Plus we “like” being empty nesters! ?.
My school is leaving dorms open. Food service will continue. But classes will be online except when not feasible, all exceptions have to be approved. So no one is being sent home, but they can leave if they want to (assume most will.)
We have Natgeo lecture tickets and I wasn’t sure if I should go. Our state has one case. In the end, I did go. We thought attendance was down about 10%. Usually there is much coughing during these lectures, but nobody was coughing tonight. There’s another one in early April and I wonder if it will go on as planned. And I have tickets to a concert in ten days ( one I really want to see.) I wonder if that will go on.
@BunsenBurner - do you know how long hand sanitizers last? I have an old bottle of generic (Walgreens) purell from about 2 years ago. A friend told me that alcohol is not very stable so I shouldn’t rely on it. It still smells strong and is in a pump bottle.
We bought it to scrub Ponderosa pine sap off of D3’s car. With elbow grease and microfiber cloths, it sure worked for that!
