Coronavirus: What are You doing ( if anything) to prepare/ What are you personally observing?

@greenwitch. Typically 3 years. There should be an expiration maybe on the bottom of the bottle.

Although she wasn’t shopping for them, DW found our local Aldi had many bottles of hand sanitizer today (at typical Aldi pricing). Might not be the place that people normally look for it, especially as Aldi has rotating inventory.

@Knowsstuff

Sorry to say but it’ll be there soon. I would bet my paycheck it’s already there. At least he’s at one of the best hospitals in the world.

Oh and fyi the Northville/Novi Costco had cold meds today if you’re a member. I think that was one of the things you were looking for for your mom.

I am in one of the EU countries.
No protection masks here there is even shortage for medical people… I am homebound due to illness CHF, PH and allover osteoarthritis so S/O does the shopping once a week. Usual is 1 week plus some extra bits. But last 3 weeks added several extra tins, cans , bags of pasta, largest rice box here is 1 kg… Our kitchens in Europe are not big so not much storage space. No pantry. I have a smaller sized american fridge/freezer that can store food for 3 persons. DD studies at uni in midwest so is a food quantity for 2 since she left.

My pharmacy has been out of stock several cardiac meds so I get substitutes but last time was way more things out of stock and replaced by others. Even vitamin D was 0 nothing in pharmacy all dosages vitamin D sold out.
S/O picks up my meds once every 90 days and the pharmacy assistant just shrug shoulders that is a mishmash of whatever generic they had in stock…

I went online for drugstore OTC but my local drugstore was several items sold out.Even paracetamol was 0 all sold out. I am not allowed ibuprofen my GP tells me with my cardiac meds together it damages kidneys.
Sometimes I order items other countries in EU that deliver to other EU countries.
After searching several german pharmacies finally found one that had all the things I was looking for plus delivery to other EU country, not all have this.
Meds in germany are also less expensive. Many years ago I used to be still able to travel and stocked up on drugstore things to bring back home.

My S/O is no-nonsense person non-believer type person and after last weekly shop he finally admit that shelves were empty of many things he never in his life see that before.
Extra bottle eucalyptus essential oils I use that for colds, get a bit more air, either a drop or in a oil burner.

Youtube Dr John Campbell has several good videos information CV and practical tips.

Went to the grocery store yesterday and got more stuff than usual. I got a big bag of rice and dry beans, juices, canned soups, ginger ale, cold meds, and extra paper products. They had everything on my list except bleach wipes and powdered milk.

Unfortunately, I am certain it will get worse before it gets better. I just hope I am wrong in the timing, but I think it will increase exponentially until mid-late April before it starts to taper off and decline.

I am afraid my DD20 and her entire senior class will miss many of the end-of-senior year events. I do think things will be resolved by the fall.

@romanigypsyeyes. Thx. Already back in Chicago. My mom’s stocked up for now. I told my son yesterday before I knew about the 2 people in Michigan to consider, if possible, doing his conference online. They have sponsors like Ford and Microsoft etc and hate to see them ask for refunds.

He is also part of the Michigan Initiative and they basically sold out for the CTO of Disney. Wonder if they will go online… Hmmm.

Agree with the hospital system. It’s amazing. Well he does have Purell in his pocket and soap at his apartment… Have to find some Zinc tablets since can’t find any there or in Chicago right now… Lol…

@thumper1 I have a car rental reserved for a spring break trip starting 3/20; I cancelled and rebooked it on Monday and saved $200. Might actually check again in a couple of days. Our SW flight has dropped by 100 (for 3 of us).

My D’s CA school is on spring break and they sent their “moving to online” email last night. Like many mention here, dorms are open for kids who need access; students are encouraged to return home, but have a housing form to fill out if they can’t. I imagine that food service info will be sent out after they have collected this info. Since most schools are only making temporary plans until the end of the month, I don’t think anyone is thinking about how to do their final-move out of the dorm at this point.

Alcohol would evaporate over time. The other ingredients don’t really matter. Just add some more alcohol (ethanol or isopropanol) and mix well.

Good article on hand sanitizers.

We just saw plenty of hand sanitizer at the check-out counter at Auto Zone.

Question: I am 58. My dentist is older than me; the hygienist is younger. Is it safe for me and them (all presumably coronavirus free, but who really knows?) if I have my teeth cleaned next week? Thanks.

My small company rents office space to other companies. One of the employees of a company that rents space from us just returned to the office today. He and his wife were on a trip to the Middle East and stayed at a hotel that was closed down because of Italians staying in the hotel that had tested positive for the virus. When the employee returned he and his wife decided they would self quarantine to be safe. Neither one came down with any symptoms and he is now at work.

My H had a person at his office return from 2 weeks of business travel in Europe (Finland, Denmark and Germany) and he was not screened at the airport returning to the US. My H’s company banned all business travel during the time this person was on the trip.

My husband works at a VA Medical Center. I’m a stay-at-home. If there’s an issue at the VAMC, we can hunker down at home for however long no problem. My mother, however, doesn’t drive. She isn’t familiar with community resources because she’s more comfortable with me getting groceries and taking her to appointments. And frankly, I’d rather do that for her; makes things easier for both of us. She and I have gone over a loose backup plan in the past, and I’ve been refreshing it with her.

  • Since I have her debit card, I withdrew a few hundred dollars in cash for her to have on hand. She's also got paper checks if needed.
  • Reviewed the list of helpful contacts we made up for her, and go over protocols. Cab company, senior ride service, her doctor's office (they said contact them and they'll tell her which services to try if she needs practical help).
  • I did a grocery run for her this morning and got a bunch of canned soup. She said she didn't have room for them, and I told her to put them in her living area and cover them with doilies.

I’ve heard the incubation period is about 5 days, so why is it necessary to self quarentine for 2 weeks? Wouldn’t somebody know within 5 days or even 7 if they were sick? Or do some people have the virus with absolutely no symptoms?

My son in Cambridge MA has been told to work from home. My wife and I officially cancelled our France trip yesterday. (We were going to leave 3/19). We both had our Global Entry interview today at the airport (oh, well, eventually we will use it)

Here is the paradox: Many events are being cancelled in an attempt to preemptively slow the spread of the virus. There are few cases in NC, and none in our county so public schools remain open. People would be outraged and accuse officials of panic if they closed schools now. I would bet they are merely waiting for the first case to show up and then they will probably close all the public schools. But if you wait for the first case to be diagnosed you will already have someone in the school who has passed it on to dozens of others before any symptoms show up. So it is really too late if you wait for the first case to be diagnosed.

To be on the absolutely safe side. The tail end of the incubation period is about 2 weeks.

If you use a cleaning service, what are your plans for the next few weeks? Do you plan to continue to use them or suspend it temporarily?

Here’s far sneezes travel unobstructed.

UW-Madison just announced that classes will be online from the end of spring break (March 30) through at least April 10. Three cases confirmed in Wisconsin so far.

My kiddo is home and my heart is full - I keep forgetting that she still has to study online and she isn’t really on spring break yet.

HOWEVER she is supposed to have an online class today but apparently sleeping through it :-). The red eye flight must be tough on her. But I must admit jumping into bed and cuddling with her before she felt asleep was really nice…

Good to see you @rosered55 ! My advice: call your dentist and ask whether they feel comfortable doing routine procedures.
