Thank you, BunsenBurner!
I didn’t feel good about it, but I took my son to the airport today - 3 day business trip to Atlanta. Then a 5-day training in Chicago. Very surprised these events weren’t cancelled, but…
I understand. I had dental x-rays and cleaning done this morning. Both the hygienist and the dentist are younger than I am (age 66). They could not have been more cautious with gloves, face masks, etc. I’m glad I can check that off as done particularly if things worsen here (Houston).
The receptionist coughed - and then couldn’t stop - as I checked out though. I washed my hands thoroughly on the way out. (She blamed allergies, and knowing the stringent rules the (pregnant) hygienist and dentist have set up, I believe her.) I was asked about fever, cough, travel when I got to the office.
Just got notice that I am not to attend any in person meetings until April 30. Since going to meetings is a huge part of my job, it basically means that most of what I do at work is off the table. I am going to have tons of free time which isn’t necessarily a good thing when times are stressful. I’d rather stay busy.
Talked to a local public school teacher this morning. She is on spring break. Her son talked her out of a planned trip to LA. She was on her way to the grocery store to stock up now that she will be in town. We discussed how hard it will be for her large, economically needy district to cancel classes. Parents, many of whom have hourly pay jobs, need the childcare. Many of the kids need the free breakfasts and lunches. And a good number of kids do not have internet at home or access to computers. Will they be able to do school work on their phones over cell if classes go online? This is a pretty reasonable, enlightened school district so I am curious how they will work all this out.
H had planned a 5-day trip to London with his best friend at the end of this month. Yesterday H’s employer gave him 2 choices: cancel the trip and be reimbursed for all expenses, or go on the trip but be forced to take a two-week unpaid quarantine upon his return. (I’d like to see this in writing. Is this legal?) H’s colleague and her daughter have a long-anticipated graduation trip planned for May. She said she’s going no matter what. H cannot afford to take an unpaid two-week leave (well, we wouldn’t starve, but it would be unwise/not worth it for this trip…)
D’s high school just cancelled a trip their choir was taking to Ireland. Lots of disappointed students. (Our D is not in the choir, but many of her friends are.)
I’m trying to decide if I should curtail going to my weekly Qi Jong class - Emeritus program by a local community college. Of course it’s all seniors - missed last week for other reasons so don’t know if attendance has dropped off. The way the class is run, it would not be possible to maintain “social distance” - arms length is more the norm. I do have type II diabetes so at age 68 would be in the “better safe than sorry” category.
Small issue compared to most of you! Although I do miss our son; haven’t been together since Thanksgiving and was hoping for Mother’s Day but that’s just wishful thinking now.
Well I’m in the ER now. Sent by my PCP and MFM. I’ll send occasional updates as useful. (Fever, cough, shortness of breath, low fetal movements)
Right now I’ve noticed ER is no busier or less busy than normal.
Valet parkers are wearing no protective gear.
They’re now asking if you’ve been out of state or country in last 3 weeks.
Masks + shortness of breath is really difficult.
@romanigypsyeyes - I’m thinking of you and the baby!
@romanigypsyeyes, hope very much they can help you get more comfortable quickly, and get you useful answers/dx promptly too. Good luck.
@romanigypsyeyes Hoping all is well and that you are able to get some clarity and relief soon.
Hope everything goes well there @romanigypsyeyes
Good luck with everything!
You should stop going. Also, they should stop offering this class.
@romanigypsyeyes. Think positive thoughts. Take care of yourself. Don’t think about updating us now.
@romanigypsyeyes Thinking about you and baby R!
Thoughts:
would you think twice about getting hair cut/ color etc?
Stylists lean over you when washing hair, cutting etc.
Also , is anyone concerned with food establishments - restaurants, fast food, even baked or cooked food in the supermarket?
Are any of you avoiding?
In terms of observations:
- Commute traffic seems to be much lighter, though there are still some slowdowns. This can be observed on traffic map apps.
- Grocery stores seem to have normal volume.
- Restaurants seem to be almost empty. Probably will mean difficult economic times for anyone who works in a restaurant.
I don’t worry about getting services like a haircut or going through through the grocery line for me…I worry about those hairstylists and grocery store clerks who have to touch people and things all day in the vicinity of germs!!!
I just went and had my hair cut at my bright, airy salon by my perfectly healthy stylist and didn’t think twice. We discussed the whole situation. They had hand sanitizer at the checkout counter.
I got my hair cut last week. My stylist had plenty of hand sanitizer and used it. Shampoo is soap so they constantly are in effect washing their hands. But I’m glad she has a studio type salon. One customer at a time rather than the big room type salons.
I am not eating out. I will not get any food from the salad bar type service at the grocery stores. If the Las Vegas resorts are ending their buffets, these food bars at the grocery stores are the same thing. Our local Bristol Farms has a very extensive one with hot and cold foods. I haven’t been over there recently to see if it is still there.
