Coronavirus: What are You doing ( if anything) to prepare/ What are you personally observing?

I wanted to do something fun so I opened a jigsaw puzzle. A jigsaw puzzle!!!

I have time for a jigsaw puzzle!

I’m slowly working on my paint-by-number. Perhaps I’ll make it my avatar when I’m done, although that will take weeks. I have a small needlepoint that I call my broken ankle needlepoint because I did practically the whole thing over the three months I was laid up.

Another parent of considerate kids, one of whom said “just lookin’ out for my old folks!”

@emilybee that works if you can get the ingredients! Here in my rural corner of Maine, where we only have 3 cases, the markets are bare of rubbing alcohol, Purell, Clorox, etc.

Went to our favorite Euro deli. Got farmers’ cheese and some ice cream. Chatted with the owner. She keeps fingers crossed that shipments will still be allowed out of Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, etc. The frozen foods section was emptied out (every bag of pelmeni and pierogi gone!). The owner said that if the shop is asked to close the doors (they also serve food so can be classified as a “restaurant”) they will try to keep afloat by doing pick up service and maybe even delivery. She also said that everyone owning a small restaurant or grocery is looking for gig delivery drivers.

I love it! Makes me think we should start a thread for staple cooking during coronavirus. ?

I don’t plan to. She only comes once a month and was here on the 6th. She wiped down everything with Clorox wipes after she was done cleaning.

I can go outside on my deck or take a ride in the country while she is here cleaning. I normally am not at home when she is here anyway.

If she decides she doesn’t want to clean at this time, that is fine with me. I’m certainly capable of doing a big clean myself.

@Creekland

Every hospital is doing this right now. EM–which encompasses disaster management (It’s their literal job to expect the very worst to happen, whether it’s a patient who walks in with back pain or planning for tornadoes/floods/hurricanes/zombies to wipe out half a town.)–and ID and hospital management are all meeting about this just about every day. They have contingency plans on top of contingency plan on top of contingency plan. Non-critical patients will be discharged. Others will be moved to other sites. Strict isolation precautions will go into effect. Healthcare workers who have been exposed but who aren’t actively ill will return to work using infectious disease precautions instead self-quarantining. Physicians and residents will be reassigned duties outside their specialties as departments close down. All medical residents are getting sim lab training in how to intubate patients–even if this something they would never normally need–and education in how to manage vented patients. Attendings and residents are making personal, domestic arrangements so they can live at hospitals and be there 24/7. Retired physicians and other healthcare worker are being contacted about coming back to work.

Philadelphia is discussing re-opening Hahnemann Hospital as a patient overflow site.

The “other” will things like supply stockers, errand runners, taking a H&P if they’ve had practice at doing them previously, delivering prescriptions from the hospital pharmacy Maybe scribing. Maybe suturing lacs after a patient has been deemed non-infectious. There’s been some discussion among state PH depts about using med students to do contact tracing. Hospitals and med schools aren’t going to put students in harm’s way–except in extremely dire circumstances. It’s an ethical decision on hospital’s part. (Residents, however, are an entirely different story…)

The Metropolitan Opera will offer free streaming on past opera performances: https://operawire.com/metropolitan-opera-to-offer-up-nightly-met-opera-streams/?fbclid=IwAR1a82hISE0LH9u_1Yy5xY3TJnXKUclu_gVYCFvlz3DI7ckytYnIp8EzhpU

Thx for this. I sent the link to my mom. She loves the opera.

I went to Trader Joe’s this morning before it opened and there was a very long line. I was able to get everything we needed and I did not notice anyone hoarding anything. People were considerate even though it was very crowded. D2 is living with us right now and she made a blueberry pie for pi day.

Well I got a delivery box from King Arthur Flour today. It’s nice to know if the world ends I will still be able to make artisan yeast breads.

Since I have an appointment Tuesday to get a vaccinations, I’ll drop my tax papers off at the CPA’s office and see if TJ is still as insane as it was last week. I need coffee filters and eggs.

I have been wondering about this too. I have 3 women who come, and 2 of them have young children. All schools are closed now, and I don’t know if they have alternate options for childcare. I will continue to pay but without the usual tip if they are unable to come. I trust them to let me know if they are not feeling well.

Just got notice today that the university campus where I work will be closed to everyone on Monday “under penalty of law”. Exceptions are for people who perform critically important functions, and that is to be decided by each department chair. Everyone doing research thinks they are critically important, so it’s going to be headaches for departments.

PSA for those in the Philadelphia suburbs: All Fine Wine and Spirits stores in Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery Counties will close by Monday; so get going if you’re in need of any hard liquor.

Fortunately I am strictly a beer drinker, and supermarkets sell that (plus wine).

@bristlecone I am the cleaning lady, and I have lost 60% of my business in the last 2 weeks because many (most) of my clients are elderly and their families have told them to suspend my services until…whenever. I’m not sure what I am going to do if this lasts indefinitely.

Sad to say. I used the think the prepper world was a bit of flat earther movement.

However imagine if the power grid went down and massive internet shutdown. I think it would get ugly very quickly. No access to info or funds. No texting family members. Water systems. This is a serious illness but we all know it will effect perhaps 1 percent of a hopefully small percentage of our population. Imagine if everyone where affected immediately like no power.

I think I just had a huge coincidence. My close friends from Honolulu were on the phone with me about what is going on in their area, they pulled up and said “We’ve got to get off the phone, we’re going into a big Memorial Service for (and named ethnicity also)

I was kind of stunned that they were going to a big gathering, but then I thought…

@HImom ?? Could this be your Dad’s memorial?? Saturday afternoon?

@CottonTales, I’m sorry your business is being affected by all of this. I hope for everyone that this passes quickly but I’m not so sure it’ll be back to regular life right away.
I don’t have a cleaning person but I have friends who do. They plan to continue to pay for their services whether they work or not.
My adult kid had moved home for a “few weeks” because her office decided that everyone can work remotely. The other adult kid is awaiting word from his office and say he may consider coming home for a few days.
I work in education and we, too, are closed. I love that my kid is home but by hour 5 today, she was complaining of cabin fever. Can’t wait til Monday when she has to sign in to work for 8 hours. Lol.
When the weather is nice, we like to hike in the nearby mountains. Fortunately, that hasn’t been canceled!

We don’t have a cleaning lady, but we are scheduled to have our entire house painted starting Monday. We are moving forward as planned. It’s a small business, and we feel like it’s pretty low risk.
I have given up the gym and am going out less than normal.

DH and I did go to the mall tonight to Sur La Table for a cooking class that we signed up for months ago. Considering it was small and near the mall entrance, I did not think it was a big risk. The mall was pretty empty, but there were people there. At the class they had us washing our hands after we touched anything, including our phones. I read that social distancing does not mean social isolation. just make it in small numbers . Also I dont think all these college kids are going to practice social isolation while they are online learning . They all have their friends also home and will hang out with each other. Overall I have very mixed feelings as if either kid got it, or myself or DH, we are healthy and I am not overly concerned, but would be concerned if we passed it to someone who was immune compromised. I am really pushing my mom to stay away from places. I also wonder at what point will everyone not be able to handle this new world of ours. parents and kids being stuck at home after a while might get cabin fever. Can we last until April/May/June?
