Cost of Taking SATs abroad?

I am trying to help a student based in Rwanda with her applications to US colleges. I spoke to College Board here in the US (twice) and was told both times that the cost of the SATI was $47 for the SATI and $28 for the international handling, for a total of $75.

She visited the Education USA Advising Center in Kigali and was told that the tests would cost the following:

TOEFEL;
test fee; 160 usd
transfer;16 usd
postage;75 usd

SAT.
test fee;75 usd
transfer; 20 usd
postage; 75 usd

I haven’t checked the cost of the TOEFL from my end, but I’m surprised that she is getting such different information regarding the SATI. Any ideas as to what could account for this discrepancy? Is there any reason why I can’t just pay for the test on my side and she can print out the admissions ticket there and take the exam?

By the way, I’m aware the students with financial need can get waivers, but this requires her high school guidance counselor to contact college board to register her high school and then submit the application for the waiver. Given the logistics involved, it probably isn’t going to happen in time to help her this year so I’m assuming that’s not an option.

What is that transfer and postage fee for?

In Nepal, we pay $165 for TOEFL and $75 for the SAT I and that’s all. Four free score reporting and a free paper report is included in that price.

1st of all, only American Citizens or Students living in the USA can qualify for fee waivers. :(

2ndly, many edUSA centers have surcharges on top of the actual registration fees. Is there an official agent in Rwanda? I found that I paid about $20 less when I registered at the official ETS agent as opposed to the edUSA center in my country.

I do not understand what the postage and transfer fees are for as well. In my country, all the registration was done online at the agents office. You fill in the usual form, but they do not post it, they input all the information onto the system, which I suppose is connected to the database at ETS.

Ask her to create a CB account and then you can get all the details of her test-center and register for her SAT online. Just pay what CB bills :)

In my (african) country, the cost of the SAT1 is indeed $75,and this includes the postage fee and surcharge etc. However it should be possible for you to pay for the student. He or she should start the registration then when she is prompted for a payment, she can enter your credit card info.Alternatively you could send a money order to the eduUSA centre in Kigali on her behalf(friends’ dad in the UK went about it this way)

“many edUSA centers have surcharges on top of the actual registration fees”

I had no idea of this Kimathi. I will just go on-line and pay the fee myself. She has given me access to her registration.

Macmill, thank you again for the suggestion. I will confirm with her that if I pay here by credit card, that she will be able to print out the ticket that she needs to take with her for the test. If not, we can try to do it as your friend’s father did.

Registering online would be your best bet!

Good luck and God Bless you for your philanthropy. :)

I took the SAT and SAT IIs in my own country, and never had to pay for postage, transfer or anything like that. I don’t even know what these things are for. Tell her to register online; that way, she’ll only be charged for the test itself + an additional international fee of $28.
