USAA just switched to Visa. I used to have a bunch of mastercards and no visas. Now I will have 2 visa (If costco ever arrives) and 1 MC, which I rarely use.
Re: paying the AMEX bill before the switch date, because online access to AMEX will end at that time
Does it matter? My understanding is the AMEX balance will roll over to the new CITI Visa card and can be paid online that way.
Looking at their FAQ I think that if you have a balance it will be transferred, but if you have a statement due, you need to pay it. For example, if your bill has arrived and is due June 30th you should pay it now before it switches (if you want to pay online, otherwise other options are available). But if you already paid a bill due last week but have a balance because you continued to charge, then it will be transferred. Anyone else read it that way?
@ClaremontMom Thanks for the clarification!
I think I’m just going to pay cash until June 20th.
I was worried ours had gone astray and was ready to call but knew it would be a frustrating process so put it off. My procrastination was rewarded when our cards arrived yesterday. Seems like they are cutting it a little close, especially with summer travel schedules!
Can anyone who got the card tell me if the extended warranty is 2 years or 3 years in the benefit description(if there is one)?
Didn’t come in today’s mail…

Yep, frozen. Yep, haven’t gotten the card yet. I’m kind of sanguine either way-we use the Delta Sky Miles amex as our primary card, and we have the Disney visa as our visa backup, so if the Coscto card goes away we won’t care.
I am assuming, since I have another Visa card, that they can just read my membership #, if they need it, off the soon-to-be-defunct AmEx so I can make a purchase with the Visa. I also have another AmEx card (though it happens to be a business card, but doesn’t matter- can be used for either personal or business purchases.
You can get a membership only card from the service desk at Costco (may have to wait in a line, depending on when you’re there). I’ve gotten one and use it with my other AmEx credit cards. From 6/20 on, I will use it with my other Visa cards. I dislike Citi.
I hope I can avoid having to go to the service desk. But it’s not a big deal in the scheme of things.
@jym626 – I hand the cashier my old Costco AmEx for the membership ID and then another AmEx to pay for the purchases. (Long story, completely unrelated to the card change.) So while I cannot guarantee that they will be able to do the same after June 20th, they can and do now.
Yes, they don’t care what card is presented for member ID. H presents his new Costco Visa for member ID and we pay with a non-Costco AmEx with no problems. The old card will still work for everything BUT AmEx charges after 6/19.
You can pay with a bank debit card too.
But why you don’t want the Costa Citi visa card? You already paid the mebership fee and the card is free (because of the membership fee).
I have issues with Citi–they’ve been bad to my folks.
I received my card and logged in online to verify. We all have to log in again on or after June 20 to set up the online account (if desired).
The card has my photo on it, from long ago when I joined Costco.
None of the material I have received mentions anything about extra benefits such as purchase protection, roadside assistance, etc., that had been offered by Costco Amex. At this point I have to conclude that there will be no additional benefits.
The benefits exist according to the card website. How they will handle the claims is another thing. Amex just paid my claim filed a week ago, while I have another claim with citi and there is no response for three weeks. I may consider purchase the stuff that needs those benefits with Amex card online.
AmEx was awesome at handling claims. I believe they have a different company processing claims than Visa. I have not been as happy with the company processing Visa’s claims. It doesn’t matter which card you have, I believe all Visa cards use the same company for the cards that provide benefits like extended warranty, etc.
Is anyone else still waiting for their card?
