COSTCO Amex vs. New Costco Citi Visa

Got our cards today and they had nothing to do with our billing cycle!

Good update and overview from USA today article

We got ours yesterday.

Someone else suggested that it had to do with when your current billing cycle ends. That seems to be reasonable.

that seems like a reasonable way to have a “random” mail-out to thwart thieves.

Good summary. This really stinks if this is a change:

“You also have to redeem your cash-back rewards at Costco.”

Amex’s rebate was a CASH equivalent: take the rebate check to Costco, and they would give you a check that can be deposited into your bank account or cashed.

Maybe they just mean it in the same way (that’s how I read it). I never thought to get a check from Costco, I’m buying stuff at Costco anyway, so why not just use it? On the rare occasion I spent less than my refund they did give me cash back (which surprised me), but I never thought about just asking for cash to begin with.

Sure, Consolation, I hope this is not a change, I just find it alarming that this is listed among the differences between Amex and Visa. I think it means that you have to spend all of your rebate money at Costco (and if the check is bigger than your purchase, the balance will be put on Costco gift card).

In the past, I had to get cash from them, lol, because I could not spend $1,000-1,500 in one shopping trip!

Agree that it is mildly annoying if you now have to apply the cashback to future purchases. Much prefer the cash!

Meant to add- my strategy was always to put as much on the card as possible. If I had a few hundred back (never had thousands like BB-- lucky you!), if I used it towards a purchase, I didn’t get the % credit that I would have if I’d used the card. So I preferred to get the cash and put everything purchased on the cr card.

I just downloaded our AX year-end statement for 2015 and 2016 to date from their website so I have that for future reference. It’s gonna be a pain to start changing all the accounts that autobilled to AX!

Don’t call me lucky. Mr.'s business travel went on that card, and even though we never paid a penny in interest, it is no fun to pay those $10k bills and then wait 2 months for reimbursements from the company.

I think you mean ClaremontMom.

Wow! Neither could I but my rebates were never that large!

Clever! =D>

Interesting. Siri autofilled “Consolation”

My tuition is almost paid… So the rebates will be smaller; however, if Mr. continues to travel like he does…

My H linked me the same article this am. When we went in Costco yesterday they had someone at the door asking if we had received our new card and reminding people to activate the card.
Our primary credit card is a Chase Sapphire Preferred. My H is discussing whether to switch to using the Costco Visa as our primary use card. We only used the AMEX at Costco.

As I posted elsewhere, I was able to get a Platinum Delta miles card to replace the Costco card, and they are crediting me back the annual fee.

I don’t think Citi was prepared for today. Wait time on phones > an hour. Online very slow, and I got dumped once. Tried to set up new Citi Costco card on Quicken today…and kept getting message that Quicken could not connect to Citi because Citi’s server was not responding.

ALso, a few weeks ago, I got my Costco AmEx bill in mail, and set up to pay via bank online as usual…thinking that my next bill would come from Citi. Well, online Citi message said “late payment alert–if we don’t receive your payment of $xxx by 6/22, late charges will be applied…”. Had to cancel my payment and change to Citi.
Had I not noticed this, guessing I would have gotten dinged with a late charge…

Just used my card for the first time for gas. Glad to see it worked.

This is SO minor of a pick but…does anyone else find the card so thin and chinzy??? Almost looks like those fake cards you get in the mail when they want you to sign up for a credit card! Also wish the color was a bit different to stand out. Minor picks, I know, but it’s so flimsy it seems easy to lose.

@abasket - I agree " Almost looks like those fake cards you get in the mail ". My new Target Card (got when they switched to the chip) looks the same way and I have had the same thought.

I paid my Amex bill online - manually, not an autopay - this Saturday on the old Amex site. I hope the payment went through and transferred to the Visa. What a pain.

Just put my Amex through the shredder.
A asker- I pulled my card out to check. It feels thin to me but I usually use my Chase Visa which is metal.
