COSTCO Amex vs. New Costco Citi Visa

@jym626 , Did you also receive the Citi-Costco Card? In reading the below article, my understanding is that Amex is not able to replace the Costco with another cobranded card. Could it be that you were solicited for the Delta Plat on some other promotional deal?

Yes, I got the Citi visa Costco card, and separately will be getting my AmEx Delta platinum sky miles card in the next day or 2. It has nothing to do with Costco. It was a separate request I made of Am Ex. Called customer service, told them I’d gotten the AmEx Delta Platinum offer in the mail, and said since I was losing my Costco Amex, could they open a new account and waive the $195 fee. They took the “application” over the phone. The only hitch was that I had my credit frozen, so had to deal with unfreezing the Experian account (actually was able to get a onetime pin # for Am Ex to check my credit) and presto, they say "congratulations-- you have been approved! And, we will expedited the cards to you! (I asked for one in my name and one and one in my husband’s). DH and I have had several ther Am Ex cards inthe past, so we were considered “valuable customers”. The only one I had l had left is officially my business card (but my business is me) so they are putting the $195 credit on that card since that account already exists.

Q: I’ve had a CitiAAdvantage card all my adult life. Cost is $50 a year. I only used it when flew AA and in places that didn’t accept AMEX. So now Costco and Fidelity have shifted to Visa. If I cancel Advantage, what hit would that do to my credit rating?

This is first time I don’t have an Amex card.

Jym, I wonder if you will be charged the fee the following year.

Pain to set up card today. I kept getting an error message that my email address wasn’t valid. Then I realized that the field was capitalizing the first letter in my addy and I guess Citi wouldn’t recognize that. So I had to write… Mmom2collegekids and then backspace out that M

Then I freaked when it said that I had made an autopayment of $4XXX yesterday. I’m like, what?? Then I go into payment history (what history at this point??) and it shows all my Amex purchases from the past few months, and then all the payments.

@jym626 , that clears it up. Congrats on getting the fee waived.

Did anyone notice if your Costco reward $ balance was different? The balance when we had with Amex was one thing but Citibank had something different.

Both H’s card & my new Citi Visa cards worked yesterday. Because he is the primary cardholder, he has to call Citi to make me an “account administrator” to be able to manage alerts & do pretty much anything online. Looking at the comments on Costco’s Facebook page, we’ll wait a bit to do that as people are complaining of hour-long waits on hold with Citi only to be disconnected. Seems like it would have worked better to have made the change gradually instead of within 24 hours for all customers.

I called Sunday morning and got thru in a minute.

I tried several times to call Citi yesterday with no luck. I finally got through today after a 30 minute wait. My husband’s name was misspelled on the card. They are sending out the new card by overnight mail.

I have my card but dont think I remembered to register it yet… Will do tonight.

For those who don’t want to wait on the phone, Citi also has a secured email message system if your request isn’t urgent.

Well I was wrong- I had already set up my Costco Visa. And the Delta Platinum cards came today. Activated those as they came in at a very convenient time. They put the fee credit on my new card account, not on the business one, which is fine with me.

Online account setup was painless… But!!! My accrued Amex cashback was reduced by about $200. What is that all about?!

@m0minmd , as I said in my previous post, my reward was reduced by $200! Have you had any luck getting any answers from Costco or Visa? I can’t call them today - too busy at work, but some quick googling revealed speculations that the new cash back balance was recalculated by applying the new Visa’s rewards formula to purchases made on Amex. If that is true, then the touted “deal” is not as great for people with patterns of spending like ours.

Whoa,BB! I looked at my account, and I am glad I only had a few reward dollars in there. that said, it’s down about 40% from what it was in the AmEx account.

I found this on the Citi FAQ

Does the amount match your previous month’s statement?

I can’t check my own…it went down from what was on the Amex site on Sunday, but my last statement for some reason doesn’t have a rebate earned on it (though the previous one to that does). The amount seems reasonable for being what it was at the previous statement.

I just made a trip to Costco to use the new Costco Citi Visa card and it was not accepted at the Costco gas pump. Went inside and found out that the membership number on the new card was an old one. This was due to my Costco AMEX card having been stolen a year ago and Costco issued a new membership number on the replacement card. I got a new membership card made and had to use it at the register, then give them the new Costco Visa card to pay for the items. I hope the over $200 I spent gets allocated correctly to the card.

The cashier told me this was not the first time today that had happened.

That’s probably it! Thanks, ClaremontMom. Mr. traveled internationally since the time of the last statement… So I will get a $10,000 bill to pay - again. Sigh. Hope the reimbursements come through quickly.

This means Visa does not show a real-time rebate like Amex did.

That doesnt seem to explain my discrepancy I dont think… not 100% sure

What about returning items charged on the Amex? I have a few items of clothing I was going to return this weekend, forgetting about the card no longer being active. Most stores will only return to the original card or give a store credit; I do not want store credit!!
