So not wishing to hijack the other costume threads…I am allowed to dress as my favorite character from a book on Friday.
I don’t care what it is…any suggestions that I can pull together with stuff in my closet? This is a primary school.

Pinterest is your friend…

Red pants, red shirt, red hat, white cloth or paper pinned to the front saying Thing 1 or Thing 2. Cat in the Hat. My twins did this one year-so cute!
Sorry, I don’t have a Pinterest account, and I’m not starting one. I already have a ton of online things that suck up y time
You don’t have to have an account to look at ideas on Pinterest.
Thumper, just click the link…no account needed. Lots of adorable book characters…Dr. Seuss has plenty of potential costumes…
ok…so maybe I need a lesson on how to get into Pinterest…because my options when I clicked on continuing with the browser gave me FB, Twitter, etc…or opening an account.
I did do a google search, but the DIY costumes I found were less than DIY!
Oh well…if anyone has a suggestion, I’d appreciate it.
I used Pinterest for several years when I was looking for ideas for homemade cards, before I ever created my own account to save stuff I found to a folder.
Folks…when I click the link. I’m asked if I would like to download the iPad app. I don’t want it. So…I click continue on browser…and I’m promote to go through FB or Twitter, or open an account.
I am not interested at this point in dealing with Pinterest…at all. Not at all.
Thank you to those who might respond with actual suggestions!
What age group or grade level specifically?
Madeleine? Mary Poppins? Olivia the Pig? Pippi Longstocking? Snow White? Cinderella? Matilda? If you Give a Mouse a cookie? Mrs. Fizzle from Magic School Bus? Little Red Riding Hood? All of these seem to have something that could be pulled from your closet, or easily/quickly made…
Mary Poppins and Little Red Riding Hood immediately came to mind.
Do you have a local Goodwill store? Lots of used and new costumes, props, etc. I got a ruffled white blouse, red sash, pirate hat and eye patch for $10. I also found a blue velvet and gold lame renassaince gown for a friend for $4, she is making a flower headpiece from the $1 store. I found a white graduation gown, angel wings and halo for $10. They also put clothing that could be used as DIY costumes on the racks for a couple of $. You could do little red riding hood, red cape and a basket. Do you have uggs? you could wear them, brown pants and buy the Viking hat at Goodwill and be from “How to Train Your Dragon”, brown bag paper and crown from “Paperbag Princess”, long black skirt, boots, white button down blouse with a string bowtie, umbrella and black hat from “Mary Poppins”, brown pants, plaid flannel shirt, straw hat, the scarecrow from “Wizard of Oz”, black gown, white shirt, tie and glasses for “Harry Potter”.
Thumper1, I have the same issue with Pinterst and the same interest level i.e., none) in starting an account. I used to be able to look through links without that request, but no longer.
As for a costume of a book character, I’m a little out of practice, but Amelia Bedelia can be put together rather easily as would be Madeline. Madeline might require a trip to the fabric store for some blue felt to stitch (or glue gun as my friend did) together a basic coat, some ribbon, and a straw wide-brimmed hat. Amelia requires little more than a simple black dress (or shirt and skirt), white apron, and little cap.
How about Amelia Bedelia, June B Jones, Cam Jansen, Miss Nelson?
The school is prek-grade 4. I have a great red raincoat. I might be able to do,something with that.
In my closet, I have a wedding gown, an eyeore costume (that I will wear if it is really chilly), a red graduation robe.
I’m thinking I could do Madeline…if I can find a blue dress. I was at my goodwill today…but didn’t see anything that would work.
Waldo from Where’s Waldo is a pretty easy costume to put together.
red raincoat = Carmen San Diego. I’m pretty sure it was books before a tv show.
Feeling your pain.
I have a costume party with Happydad’s work colleagues on Saturday. Other than Happydad’s go-to Mad Scientist costume, the family stash is at the old house in Maryland. All I’ve got to work with here in the Not Yet Frozen Far North MidWest are a couple of bathrobes and a flimsy academic gown from my MS Ed graduation last spring.
My best costume…for me. I wore my son’s graduation gown and cap…and carried around a copy of his BU diploma. Around my wrist I wore a price tag that said $200,000 on one side. On the other side it said “Priceless”.
The grown ups got it…kids didn’t!
