Could I get into LSA with my low GPA?

I REALLY want to go to UMich LSA and major in CS. The campus is only about half an hour away from my house and the college is just absolutely perfect for me. I transferred to a competitive high school a month after my freshman year. Big mistake. I went from having a 3.7UW GPA to a 3.0UW GPA. The workload was much harder and took me until junior year to adjust. This kind of relates to the college transition most students face. I’m a senior right now and this has been my progress:
9th grade: 3.0UW
10th grade: 3.1UW/3.3W
11th grade: 3.3UW/3.66W GPA
ACT: 30
SAT: 2230 (750 CR, 740 W, 740 Math)

APs:
APUSH-4
AP EngLang-4
AP Stats-5
AP Micro/Macro-4
AP Spanish

ECs:
Treasurer of Key Club
Key Club member
100+ hours of community service
Tutored disadvantaged children successfully
Varsity Track & Field

I’m also low income + first gen college student + learning disabled.

My low GPA is due to me getting C’s and B’s on all tests (my high school’s grading scale is 10% homework, 90% tests/exams). It seems that no matter how hard I study, I still get C’s and B’s on tests. Not sure why. My classmates barely study and get A’s and 4.3 GPAs. They call me stupid. The easiest class for me is Spanish (I’m taking 4 years of spanish).

Do I have any chance? It seems that UM does not care for LD students. I’m trying so hard right now to get those A’s and I’m willing to work 10x more than my classmates. If I maintain my grades, I should get a 3.8UW GPA by November.

bro tell your story man, I say YES you have a chance, just write a kick ass essay and tell your story mang.

Your GPA is indeed very low for UMich and they do value that more than other schools.

Does anyone know how hard it is to transfer from Washtenaw community college?

If you got a 2230 on your SAT then you clearly are not stupid so there is probably another reason for your low grades on your exams. You mention a learning disability which could explain it. It sounds like you are getting help for this.

I would suggest talking to your high guidance counselor about a strategy for college. If you live within a half hour of Ann Arbor and go to a competitive high school then I am sure that the U-M admissions rep knows your school well.

I would think the odds are against getting accepted as a freshman but based on your recent success in school there may be a chance for a transfer if you can get your grades up.

I also live within a 20-30min radius of the school. Yea, your GPA is somewhat low. To be fair, the highschools around Umich are all competitive just because the students wanna go to umich. Your chances don’t look great in my eyes, but I think just write a good story, submit your 1st semester/tri grades in if they improve and wish for the best.

I know plenty of friends who have xferred to Umich from WCC. After a certain point, umich stops looking at your highschool performance so this is not the end of the line. If you don’t get in, do good at WCC and xfer over later on

Here’s the thing you want to consider, Mike25 – it sounds from your GPA like you have difficulty testing due to your LD, with ample native intelligence as demonstrated on your SAT.

UMich certainly has accommodations after a fashion for LD students, BUT they first have to be convinced that you’re CAPABLE of succeeding at their school. This may be a bit of a hard-sell considering your GPA, but your “trend” for improvement is promising.

There is a counselor located right in Ann Arbor who can privately coach students with LDs and has worked successfully with UMich students – you may wish to consult her to see if there are strategies you can use on taking more successful tests. For example, are you using extra time? Do you qualify for same?

At any rate, the counselor is Geri Markel – and she’s also the author of a great book for students with learning disabilities – here’s her site, hope it helps you find resources: [About Managing Your Mind: Managing Your Mind](http://www.managingyourmind.com/about.html)

Also, transferring is a great option and yes, you would stand a solid chance if you maintained a high GPA and got good letters of reference.

BTW, my son has an LD, and had to really gut it out times at UMich, but he loved it, so it was worth it. Just remember you’ll be among students who are equally bright or brighter, but who do work WAY FASTER than some people with LD’s are able to, so you might find you struggle a bit to keep up and manage the workload.

Also, to receive accommodations from UMich, you will ALSO need a NEW neuropsych evaluation as an adult (at age 18) or you will NOT be entitled to accommodations. So plan for that, and make your parents aware, as it is costly.

If you’re accepted, and then eligible for LD accommodations (they won’t accept your evaluation until you’re accepted, btw) then you will be eligible for things like a coach for cognitive behavior mod for organizing your workload; notetakers; assistive devices, etc. depending on the specific results of your neuropsych evaluation.

Best wishes!

2230 SAT and looking at community college? Lol. If you’re that into UM, and get rejected, go to Eastern or State or whomever in-state that will offer you the biggest scholarship/finaid package and transfer after a year or two. Your numbers and extracurriculars are way too good to waste life in junior college classrooms. Go get some of the freshman college experience, at a university. I can’t imagine putting that much energy into HS to go to a community college.

you probably are getting accepted with that SAT score

mike25, I do not think it is accurate to say that Michigan does not care about students with LD. It is more accurate to say that Michigan does not wish to admit a student that cannot succeed at the University. The course content and grading curve at Michigan are harsher than those you will find in high school. If you are struggling to get Cs and Bs in high school, you will probably find it even harder at Michigan. Most universities, Michigan included, rely on high school GPA to estimate academic success at university. That is why virtually all admitted students have unweighed GPAs in the 3.8-4.0 range. It is very usual for students with sub 3.6 GPAs to be admitted, regardless of their SAT results, unless their school is famous for grade deflation. However, from your post above, it seems that many of your classmates are getting 4.0+ GPAs, which does not bode well for you. You should apply, but treat Michigan is one of your reaches.

@alopez14 that’s the most pretentious thing I’ve read on this website. Some of the smartest people I know came from community college. It’s a practical choice for people who don’t necessarily want to go to a 4-year school at first (due to cost, maturity, etc.) along with those who couldn’t have gotten into a 4-year school outright. Don’t be ignorant.

The OP is way too smart for community college. That’s not pretentious, that’s a compliment and a fact. If rejected, I suggest another 4-year university where he can still get the freshmen experience. He’s worked very hard and to be in 13th grade after would be a waste and it’s NOT a thriving environment for someone of his caliber. It could actually harm his growth to be in such a place.

If “virtually all” of the c/o 2017 have a 3.8-4.0 why is the university saying their AVERAGE hs gpa is 3.79 or 3.8?

There are many students transferred from wcc each year. It is also a lot cheaper than going to EMU. Indeed, I know many UG students transferred from community colleges from other states too. Most important, you are likely to get good grades at WCC. However, you should also consider other possibility. The counselors at wcc are not very helpful.

OP in other threads, you’re an IL resident and have a 2110 SAT – looking at Questbridge and making inquires about Brown and Stanford. Are you in Michigan or not?
