<p>This is actually more related to education than you might think; I’m planning on entering Canada as a student either this fall or the next and there’s no better way to get to know the feel/culture of a country than to read several key papers. Could someone give me a rundown of what leftist, centrist and conservative(all according to Canadian standards) papers are good to read? A short bio of them all. Maybe 3-4 papers.</p>

<p>Try the Globe and Mail which while Toronto-based is circulated throughout the country. If you know where you are going then I can be more specific as the papers are local.</p>

<p>I’ve also checked out Toronto Star and Calgary Herald, do they have any relevancy in the country or just in their area? (Toronto and Calgary respectively).</p>
<p>I used to live in Toronto - the Star is pretty local.</p>
<p>The Toronto Star is not a “local” paper in the same way the Brockville Recorder and Times is a local paper. The Star is, of course, GTA-centric, but that’s not saying much considering about 16% of Canada’s population lives in the GTA and probably an even larger share of GDP. The Star gives you a sense of some of the important issues facing Canada with a bit of Toronto trivia thrown in the mix. It’s left-of-centre, usually endorsing the Liberal Party, and takes a decidedly liberal or even social democratic stance on social policy.</p>
<p>As wiki said, The Globe and Mail and The National Post are Canada’s only papers that can properly be called “national” – the former being centrist and the latter created by and for conservatives.</p>
<p>When I say local I do mean GTA-centric and as I live outside that area, I find it really does not meet my needs. Even our national papers feel somewhat Ontario-centric. While I have lived in Ontario extensively (over 30 years) - after I left, I felt that they don’t represent perspectives of the West or East. We’re a big country and it is hard to find one paper that covers all. I still like CBC - a different media, but they do try to cover the country. Try looking at the online CBC.ca sites.</p>

<p>I did find CBC, it’s basically a copy of the BBC just Canada-style, as I felt it. Excellent news agency, plenty of docs, podcasts, in-depth reports and so on.</p>
<p>any of the “star” papers, ie windsor star, calgary star, toronto star… check those for a good read depending on where you go… but if you want culture, why not just look it up on the internet and then visit the places??</p>
