Crazy deferral reversal ideas

One of my friends suggested a crazy idea only specific to me and my app. After talking to my regional rep on Friday, I feel a lot better about my deferral. I will definitely do what she told me to do, but I also have another idea. My last name is “Hummel” and there are figurines made by Hummel. I was thinking I could send a Scholarly looking Hummel Figurine to the Admissions Office with a note attached,

"Congratulations, you have received Hummel #{insert actual number}, (insert Hummel name), for no additional charge, For a limited time, you can receive a limited addition hummel #{insert SS#}.

So far, the people I have asked thought It was an excellent idea except for my English teacher, he thought it could be seen as bribery since the Hummel figurine is worth ~$500. Let me know what you guys think

wow, that’s amaaaaazing. DO IT! If someone sent me that, I’d laugh and take them.

Are you crazy?!

This screams “bribery”. If anything, it’ll hurt your chances.

Spend $500 on this? It’s a waste of money, even if it would help you a little bit. Instead of working to earn the money to pay for the thing, you should spend that time working to improve your grades or something that will actually help your chances.

My family owns about a bazillion hummel figs, so it doesn’t matter about the price

you should play the hummel trumpet concerto really well and send it in, or just relate yourself to Johann directly. that way, you’ll be seen as a relative of a celebrity, or something.

A much less contriversial idea would be…

send them a picture of the model, “free offer to get $500 dollar figurine, all you have to do is call this number! and admit this applicant (figurine not included)”

something without…

the bribery

you could always send it, explain the joke, and ask for it back, providing a package and shipping costs

would that be rude though? it might seem like youre flaunting wealth

i think itd be pretty funny though

I really want to do it, but I don’t want it to seem like bribery

rikataka: I play the saxophone, not the trumpet, and I am distantly related to my man Johann

ok, i have an idea!!!

photoshop time!

send four pictures, 3 of hummel figurines from the catalogue, one of you

“sailor on pacific” (bear in mind i have no clue what we’re talking about here): $450

“NYFD fireman”: $375

“Fisherman and pole”: $500

The real deal (picture of you): priceless

I don’t think that is too creative, people have killed that idea, but thanks for your idea 26e, but seriously, i think i should send the figurine so that they can set it around their office and think of me, but i just don’t want it to come across the wrong way.

yeah, idk. are there any cheaper versions? maybe send in a knock-off (one that looks like you, if you can find it), and use the same pitch?

-OR- and this is even riskier, send it in, and say, “i’m just lending it you, i’ll have it back in september”

lol, i doubt there is a figurine with red hair, but i thought it was a good idea, now i’m second guessing

since i own a small skateboard company (i buy and ink screen decks and resell them), I was wondering if I should send them one that says University of Pennsylvania with a note that says, give it to someone that needs it whether you accept me of not. On one of my activities i wrote that i resell skateboards for profit and for nonprofit. Any thoughts? it only costs me about 15 dollars plus shipping

I think it’d be a good idea if they weren’t so expensive. I’m pretty sure that’d be considered some kind of bribery which would look really bad. I thought that 26e’s idea was kind of funny though…

nonskaterhater: two probs

1) size. a skateboard is really huge, man

2) note better be really good. maybe a short 1 paragraph essay about how you’re continuing your work would be good…but still, what are they gonna do with that?

26e, I like your idea about the whole “just lending it, I’ll get it back in September.” I think I will incorporate it somehow. But if I make sure it is understood as “lending” there won’t be a problem.

question-do you think I should get my rep’s input on this or would that take away the surprise and ruin my confident image in my app?

yeah, i’d maybe search around for recorded penn adcom opinion on gimmicks, but you can’t let her know. again, it may be best to send it with an essay, so it seems like something that just kinda got tacked on, rather than you think, “oh, i send a figurine and i’m in, dude.”

Maybe I could talk of the great business skills of the Hummels, Hummel figurines corporation, Johann Hummel and his music, Hummel Clothing line from Europe, and say they can expect equally great things from me?

idk. make sure there aren’t any infamous hummels.

also, you only get to (or should, rather) send in so much writing to penn. i wouldn’t want to waste it on non-penn stuff. so make sure if you did that, you are very brief with the history lesson
