I’ve frequently encountered the possibility of getting sophomore standing if certain conditions regarding courses taken in High School are met. However, I have not seen any advice on how to get sophomore standing if you are an international (in my case, German).
So does anyone know if there is such a possibility?
I think such an opportunity would be reasonable, particularly because there are 13 years of schooling in Germany.

Each college and university posts the requirements for admission with advanced standing right on its website. If you can’t find it there, it is perfectly OK to email the admissions office and ask.

Depending on where you are from you may get some credit at some schools. However this entirely depends on the school and your state of origin. My college only accepted Leistungskurs-Credit but initially told me I would get credit for every subject I wrote a final exam in. Since one of my Leistungskurse was German I only ended up getting Credit for the other class; English. It didn’t help me anything, I still had to take Intro to English. An other German student at my school got credit for 3 or 4 of her classes (different part of Germany), which gave her enough credits for one semester not an entire year.
This is only my school though, less academically rigorous schools might be more lenient.

So don’t count on getting enough credit for an entire year since at most you are probably only going to get credit for your LKs.
Also just because you went to school for 13 years it does not mean that you have enough background knowledge to get equivalency-credits for Intro-Classes. In some subjects your Abitur-knowledge will get you as far as 4 weeks; possibly less.

Thanks, that has been quite eluminating. I’m going to look at some websites now.
