<p>hi, guys. i’m an asian girl who is signed away to (and in love with) penn.</p>
<p>…but my cousin (who’s at penn right now) recently sent me an alarming email. here’s a bit of it:</p>
<p>“There are currently students here on trial for murder, and teachers who are being sued for raping students…Most of the staff, custodians, cafeteria workers, are criminals from the poor parts of Philadelphia. Penn got in trouble for not doing background checks. Many of them break into students dorms when they are supposed to be cleaning.”</p>
<p>She also went on to say that Asian girls at penn are especially harassed and the administration turns a blind eye to these problems. </p>
<p>no matter what, i am STILL going to penn because i love it. personally, i think that as long as i stay in a group (preferably with a couple big, strong guys) and don’t put myself in crazy situations, i’ll be okay. but all the same, i’m worried about the crime problem, so i was wondering if you guys have any thoughts/experiences (thought i hope you don’t have any experiences with this sort of thing). </p>
<p>Very nice of your cousin to send an email that stirs panic unnecssarily.</p>

It was most matter a of jealousy - she is accused of having killed her ex-boyfriends new girlfriend.</p>

<p>Also, he was kicked out as soon as it came up.</p>

<p>I have heard of one such case. There might be one more, but I doubt it. It is definately not prolific in any case, and penn has taken great steps since the incident.</p>
<p>Most of the house cleaners are friendly, and the security guards are nice. Just lock your doors.</p>
<p>BTW, if you havent noticed, I’m asian too. But I’m not a girl. The only danger you are in is from all the white guys here who have yellow fever. Which for you, may or may not be a good thing.</p>
<p>student #1 being tried for murder is a strange wharton senior who has mental issues.</p>
<p>student #2 being tried for murder is a respected college junior who is also very likely to be acquitted, since the evidence is flimsy.</p>
<p>the teacher being sued for rape was a be professor dismissed years ago, and is only back in the news because he managed to get some job at some italian school before they found out about his record and kicked him out.</p>
<p>if staff were criminals, they wouldn’t be allowed to work here anymore… end of statement.</p>
<p>finally, penn is nearly 25% asian. if asian girls were being harassed en masse, you’d think the asian population (counting yours truly) would do something about it. (and oh, we would!)</p>
<p>Meng, Meng, Meng, why must you always bring up asian fever when the asian girls are around?</p>
<p>Really though, safety isn’t an issue. It might be an issue if you’re a nubile female stumbling drunkenly in an alleyway, but beyond that if you have an ounce of street smarts nothing bad is going to happen to you…and this is coming from a guy who has stumbled drunkenly down alleyways (thank god I’m not a nubile female).</p>
<p>People love to sensationalize. This is why there is a task force. Penn is a school and, to be honest, not much “newsworthy” stuff happens here, so when something DOES happen, the DP especially loves to just pimp it and pimp it and pimp it and pimp it so they don’t have to run another article about new college requirements or whatever.</p>
<p>I have a feeling mister Chen is just jealous of the white guys who score the chicks he can’t get. Yellow fever my rear-end. You just don’t have any luck — or game.</p>
