So after his first year in college (Cal Poly Pomona) my brother has done overall really well.

But ive asked him about college life and college classes. Some being harder and boring than others, and it surprised me that he recieved a few C’s.

My question being that is this true? After 4 years killing yourself in high school to get that 4.0+ gpa and when you go through college just passing is the best feeling ever?

Tell me what you think!

Well, some colleges have academic probation at higher than that. And some students plan on doing grad school, and for the (rare) employer, GPA might be important but other than that it doesnt really matter. The truth is, college classes are difficult and, like anything, if you arent motucated than it can br easy to become apathetic.

I’m going to assume your brother is majoring in a technical field, considering he is going to Cal Poly Pomona. If he’s not, then disregard everything I’m about to say.

Not only is the first year of college a shock to most students, but first year technical students take classes like Calculus, Chemistry, and Physics. It’s a safe bet that no small number of students with top-notch high school grades made even worse grades than C’s in these classes. These classes are designed to weed people out, but the information is critical to the success of a technical student.

Graduate schools and employers put much more weight on later courses than the early ones, when deciding who to accept/hire. If he gets C’s now, but A’s later, he should be fine. If his grades go down even lower, then it’s cause for concern.

So, regarding last year, what’s done is done. Your brother’s only focus now should be on this coming year, and nothing else.

Wow, my words are incompetent compared to his/hers/its ^, you should ignore me!

I feel like It really depends on the school, classes(profs), and how well your high school prepared you. I went to a very competitve high school and for the most part my friends and classmates and myself found our freshman year to be alot easier then expected. I feel like the kids that got 4.0s in high school are motivated enough to get as close to those grades in high school. Plus, your parents are paying alot of money for you to attend college and your only job is to do well. Also keep in mind kids on scholarships must maintain a certain gpa to keep the money which can often be a deal breaker when determining if you can afford to attend college.

Just wanted to add that my brother does major in computer science and he did end up in the honor roll as a freash man.
He also has a part time job,
And he has a scholorship and financial aid that pays for 90% of college. Which leaves my parents just payinh for some few expenses.
He is a smart student overall, but at the college level a C can be a good friend

Haha xD then what are you complaining about? In my opinion he should be enough of a self advocate to be on top of his grades, and to be honest I wouldnt want my little sister worrying about the grades I get in college, all you can and should be doing at this age is to worry about yourself.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say a C can be a good friend, and he should still try to avoid them, especially if he’s looking to pursue a Master’s degree, which I strongly recommend.
