CSUF or SUNY Purchase for theatre tech [CA resident]

what it says on the tin. I am from california so csuf is definitely cheaper for me and neither schools gave me financial aid though I am contacting both offices to ask for something because I might as well try. I got accepted to the sound design bfa at purchase which appeals to me because I would like to get more specialized course work, however doing the theater ba at csuf would let me learn a broader range of skills that I think could be more helpful when trying to actually do theatre tech work not ij school. Also while not a deal breaker purchase doesn’t have a musical theater program at all.

You’re unlikely to get money from purchase. As a non NY resident, their mission isn’t to support you.

Can you afford it as is ?

It’s a great name. Does that matter in this industry and distance to NYC, I don’t know.

Congrats on the admits. If you decide to go to Purchase, make sure you can afford it (no loans) and that you are comfortable living that far from home. While others go home on weekends or holidays, you likely won’t.

Good luck.

I would assume the OP knows this, but for those folks not familiar with the school, CSUF (Fullerton) has a really top notch MT program. Congratulations on two great admits.

From what you are sharing above, it sounds like CSUF will potentially give you a broader base of education and experience.

I also advise you consider the cost difference including travel.

Which CSUF, Fresno or Fullerton? Both have theater majors, including design and technology emphases.

Either way, if costs are a concern or debt may be in the picture, it would be better for those going into performing arts to avoid or minimize debt, since income in these professions can be uncertain.

CSUF = Fullerton or Cal State Fullerton. Fresno is a Cal State but known as Fresno State.

Jobs in theater tech are much less “risky” than other forms of performing arts degrees. OP if you are interested in sound and want to work in NYC in theater tech, SUNY Purchase seems like a better bet. Well known program and a BFA specific to theater. If you want a more general theater degree then the BA theater program seems like a better bet. Good luck!
