Has anybody visited CSULB? What is the atmosphere like? And the students, how are they? I’ve heard good things about the STEM program here but can anyone verify this?
@IBkidonthestreet I visited once before and it was a pretty okay atmosphere. I don’t know much about the students but the campus is nice. I heard it’s kind of in the ghetto but I didn’t see that part of the school.
@IBkidonthestreet @anenglishmajor I’m a local to the Long Beach area, the school itself is not really ghetto but the Long Beach area itself has patches of areas that are kinda not safe but there are also patches of areas that are pretty safe. That’s just how Long Beach is, as a city is.
It was a busy campus when I visited, lots of students with a lot of diversity. Parking is more manageable compared to other Cal States especially if you’re willing to walk. Their student center is really nice; there’s a lot of things you can do. A lot of establishments. I would say it’s comparable to UCI with older buildings. That’s atleast what I thought.
As to the atmosphere, it’s chill. People seemed relaxed. People seem to be easy going. I get to talk to some students on CSULB’s discord server and they very friendly and helpful.
Hi guys, I’ve commented on here a few times. I’m a current CSULB student (transferred last fall).
The school is okay. Some areas are nicer than others. The campus is shaped like an uppercase T. The lower part of the campus is really nice–updated buildings, etc. Upper campus? Old. Gross. I’m a criminal justice major and the rooms/buildings I’m in are really old and typically pretty hot. If you’re a liberal arts major, I recommend visiting the campus to make sure you like it. If you’re a STEM major, you’ll be fine. 90% of your classes will be in gorgeous, updated buildings.
The area around CSULB? Pretty sketchy. I wouldn’t park my car on the outside border because cars get broken in to.
The people here are really hit or miss. I’ve met some incredible people here that I talk to all the time. I even went on a vacation with a couple of them.
Also, all of the SOAR dates are in July, and you guys will all get the last pick of classes. DO NOT pick waitlisted classes, you WILL NOT get in. You’ll have mediocre teachers for one semester, but you’ll live. Everyone has last pick at least once in their college career. In about a month, look over the current class schedule and make a few different options for yourself for classes. Classes fill up quickly during SOAR, so you want some idea of what classes you want to take. If you guys need any suggestions or any help, let me know.
I was accepted as a Statistics major. I’m local but still haven’t toured the campus yet.
@rb8991 Hi, I’m coming from the bay area and am pretty unfamiliar with LB. Do you have any recommendations for safe, not sketchy apartment complexes near CSULB or in surrounding areas? thanks!
Does anyone know if we can accept admission from more than one cal state just while we are deciding? @rb8991 @muzzles @adreezybones
@SexyAZn7 have you decided on where you will be attending?
@lulu1115 I asked this question as well awhile back, and I didn’t get a straight answer. However I was told that for UC’s, if you accept admission to more than one school, they will both rescind your offer.
Do all incoming transfers have to take the GWAR exam? Even if you’re an art major? What happens is you pass it/fail it? Also, where do they sell the GPE workbooks?
@telepethics Yes, all incoming transfers need to take the GWAR I believe we have up until our first semester at LB is about to end to take the test. However, they recommend we take it over summer preferably before SOAR. But I guess it’s just for proper placement with classes. I dont know about the whole pass or fail thing though.
@busfinance I have decided to attend CSULB! I really had a tough time debating between CSUF and CSULB since CSUF has Mihaylo. However, I have researched that Mihaylo is only good for accounting and maybe for finance not for my major, supply chain management and information systems. I have to admit, I was also admitted to CSUF as a high school senior and I was rejected to CSULB back then. This makes me think I should take this opportunity to attend CSULB. Nonetheless, I don’t think you can go wrong with any college. After all, going to any of the Cal States won’t guarantee you a job. You have to make the most out of your education and actively search for internships/experience directly related to your major!
@busfinance Also, CSULB had the better location since they have the Port of Long Beach and the Port of LA nearby, which are two locations that are big on supply chain. There are also other local logistics companies nearby and I know there is Boeing in Long Beach as well. I would say go to the university that has the most recruitment opportunities as well for your major! Good luck on your decision. Let me know where you end up going!
@SexyAZn7 I believe i will be attending csulb. after much consideration the schools are very close in respect to business and the commute to csulb for me is about 20min which will in turn save me about 20k in the two years i would have had to pay for housing at csuf
@lulu1115: You can SIR to 2 CSU’s prior to the official SIR deadline, but will need to withdraw one of the SIR’s by the deadline. Since the SIR deadline is in a few days, no reason to do it at this point and I would not take the chance of having your acceptance rescinded. If you have extenuating circumstances, you could call admissions and ask if they could extend the SIR deadline.
@busfinance Those are valid reasons for choosing CSULB. I am renting a room for the first year to ease my transition but I will probably be commuting the last year to save a bit. If I were to commute, it would take 30-40 minutes (depending on traffic). Hope to see you around next year!
If I fail a class needed for transfer, am I guaranteed to be rescinded or can I explain my situation? I’m not doing very well in a class needed for transfer and I’m scared.
I think I already talked about my situation, but now I’m extremely worried since there’s only four weeks left in the semester at my school.
@muzzles what class is it exactly? Is it a GEN ED? Or lower division class? I’m sorry I know how stressful it can be taking those last few classes before transfer.
