See you around at LB should I decide to go for sure. Lol @ggdcal
@adreezybones
I talked to a lot of professors as well as successful graduate students and they told me it doesn’t matter where you go, as long as you finish your studies, and you don’t do loans or get into debt.
So whatever you believe will be less harsh on you!
And I’ve met people who’ve gotten loans of 100k+, some are taking 20 years to pay it off, some are taking 10-15 years, and they make 80-100k a year. But even then, student loans are never worth it in the end.
It’s your choice, but that’s just what I’ve heard!
good luck!
Thanks for the friendly reminder dude @ggdcal. Sometimes I get caught up with “school names” and their so-called “prestige” that I’m starting to forget my purpose of studying. Yeah if I’m gonna continue going to grad school then I shouldnt get myself in debt.
@adreezybones I go back and forth about whether the college “prestige” matters. guess it depends on the field of grad school you are going into. my sister did grad school as a speech pathologist, incredibly competitive for grad school so where you went made a difference. She went to SDSU and actually didn’t make it in the first year she applied around despite being one of the top in her class, but the next year she got in and she’s out already. another sister of mine received her bachelors in child development and managed to work her way into a position that was reserved for someone with a master’s so sometimes its not just where you went but the connections you make along the way too. I think as far as cal states go for art history Long Beach is not the only solid option but it is a solid and excellent one.
I am a returning student after taking time off for personal reasons. I was at SDSU majoring in graphic design (had already started upper division courses) but chose not to return because I just can’t move down there at this moment (husband already in school locally, I have kids, and that commute would just be insane). I drifted to art history and since my absence am crazy anxious about being on top of it all. taking community college classes to get in the groove (like riding a bike) but knowing that for art history a bachelors is not the final stop for me, has got me researching pathways like crazy. (especially since its not necessarily a lucrative field, though here’s to hoping)
definitely second the don’t go crazy into debt if you can avoid it. I have a friend who went to a private art school and is a successful cartoonist but has a mountain of debt from school that he refuses to touch because he says it’s impossible to payoff. I can’t imagine what it’d feel like to have that cloud in the background. I was so happy to pay off my loans from SDSU that im weary of new ones, plus my husband is in nursing at a private so his loans… ya
@ggdcal Yeah of course! And also remember, your future employers don’t care where you went, they just care for your degree/certificate and or experience, depending on your field! Best of luck!
I wrote this lengthy response about school choices and such but it was flagged for some reason (no foul typos I am aware of) anyways it essentially said: depending on your field your school does matter for grad school (my sister graduated SDSU in speech pathology among the top in her class and because her field is so competitive schooling wise, it mattered and took a year longer than she wanted to get in a good program.) but the connections you make also can make a huge difference (my other sister got her bachelors in child development and through hard work and connections landed a top position despite it requiring a masters degree that she didn’t have). so its not really entirely predictable.
To explain my crazy research in schools I should note: I am a returning student after personal time off. I was a graphic design major at SDSU already in my upper division classes. I can’t pick up where I left off because I have a family now that can’t just move with me yet (commuting would be insane), and my interests changed with my time away (hence art history). so… im crazy over preparing, thinking about all the steps down the line. I know I can’t afford the “best” schools (though that’s all debatable anyways), but I want to get the most bang for my buck while I can. so my research is more about diversity within the program not necessarily prestige
I 2nd the avoiding debt if u can, but sometimes that can’t be avoided.
@whythefox I see both posts, I don’t see that the other is flagged!
Yeah agreed! It really just depends on your major, if the colleges you’re comparing have about the same good rep for the major, you can compare and contrast.
@adreezybones
Imo, 10-20k of debt can be paid off, but anything well over 50k might take years depending on your salary + where you end up living + life expenses.
So you could do the pros and cons of what colleges accepted you, and if you have time, maybe dive deeper into the research to see which one can offer you the best education for the amount you’re paying.
@ggdcal. I guess it passed moderation because yesterday it was still missing on my end and I was told by a moderator most posts don’t pass once flagged, so dunno
when my husband got advice about loans for nursing everyone told him don’t worry you’ll make enough to pay it off, so I second the depending on the field making a difference
for those of you who have signed up for SOAR and have all “to do” items checked off: is the degree planner option available in your MyCSULB? I see that the SOAR info for transfers recommends we check out our degree planner before the workshop. just curious if it shows up after all “to do” items are done or if is more likely to show up in that 2 week window before SOAR
@whythefox I was looking for the degree planner too. But I don’t see it, and all my to-do items are gone, I signed up for soar and accepted. Wonder how we look at the degree audit if its not there?
@ggdcal Oh yeah, that’s the target. I’m just keeping my student loans at a minimum. As much as I value education. I don’t think I’ll be willing to spend that $50k up for school.
@whythefox thank you for the insightful comments about the situation! I was looking for your first version too, just don’t know why it got flagged. But anyway, yeah you’re right, our field doesn’t really appear as lucrative as medical/technological field but I want to get into the education aspect of art and end up doing research even eventually. Because I know making art alone is definitely not going to pay the bills. I see art as a very underrated field to be honest.
@lulu1115 maybe it will show up just before SOAR. I hope so anyways.
@adreezybones totally agree about art being an underrated field; because of that some post grad programs i’m interested in have way more options abroad.
wish I could delete the duplicate posts but just learned it’s impossible unless its done within those first 15min of posting (as of now anyways)
Oh! A question for anyone who plans on attending CSULB, do you guys know the best websites for housing? I tried CSULB’s off campus housing but none of the applicants have responded yet.
@ggdcal there’s a group on facebook for people looking for housing. I forgot the exact name though.
Wish I saw the forum sooner, but thanks for the tip to check Student Services for SOAR sign-ups! I was really hoping they’d send an email…
I’m also only seeing dates for July for College of Liberal Arts, how upsetting!
Is anyone able to use degree planner yet? It’s up but it says it has no information on my degree yet. Supposedly it will be up after SOAR but that’s late. Especially when we can begin registration JULY 1st! @muzzles @adreezybones
I dont know, haven’t checked yet. I have;’t even received my clear admission yet. Anyway, I’m just waiting til this week or next week i’m gonna end up SIR-ing to LB
@lulu1115 where is the degree planner even located? I don’t see it.
So I’m waiting to hear back from UCI and UCSD but I got into LB and at this point, it’s looking like UCI and UCSD are going to end out their admissions probably the last week of April, if not the last day. I already did everything on my To Do list. I haven’t SIR since I’m waiting for Irvine and UCSD’s decisions. I’m a bit scared if I don’t SIR soon I’ll lose my spot. Does anyone know if it’ll affect it if I wait until almost the deadline?I’m so stressed lol
@anenglishmajor I think we’re guaranteed a spot until May 1st. I’m the same as you are just waiting for the UC schools to come out with their decisions pretty much have you been cleared for admission?
