EA Rejected
SAT 1510 (one time, 790 M, 720 R)
SAT Subjects Chem 730, Math2 740 (or thereabouts - but not sure even sent)
National Merit Commended
GPA 4.7 W / 3.5 UW (but school has generous weighting system)
School does not rank
AP Classes: AP Calc AB (5), AP Chem (4), AP Physics 1 (4), AP Bio (4), AP Human Geo (5), AP Lang (3), AP Stats this year; rest of academics are honors
Visited (required plane trip) and interviewed
Decent ECs (2 sports, club, public service activities, work - but not a president/captain)
Strong background in area of interest - Chemistry (coursework in honors chem, AP chem, biochem, organic chem, and currently a TA in honors chem class)
Naviance suggested this was a match school - but obviously not. Other good options though.
deferred (and my second deferral this week :()
1460 sat (720 r/w, 740 math); 4.15 gpa (w)
visited (campus tour and info session)
very sad because cwru is one of my favorite schools that I applied to, and I thought I had an actual chance of getting in, and don’t know what more I could have done
Deferred. 1540 SAT 2, 800 Math 2, 760 Physics. 3.98 W at a highly selective test in STEM magnet, may be the most rigorous public school in the county. Applied for Geoscience or Origins Science. Year long mentored science research, lots of great ECs. Etc.
It’s not the deferral that gets me. It’s the hard sell for ED II, which keeps us from being able to compare merit packages. They basically says EA deferrals will probably get in from ED II but RD is a crapshoot.
I think it’s skeezy. It will be my kids call. And they were really excited about CWRU. But his father and I will encourage him not to carry on to RD. It looks like Case is automatically deferring most kids who hit the 75% or above on the SAT— to yield protect, or put them into ED where they get less aid, or something else. It makes me think a lot less of the school that they are playing games with top kids during admissions.
As parents, we are really turned off by the ED 2 hard sell. It’s like buying a used car tactics. Buy now before all the slots are filled! Not what we want out of our kids college.
He has a couple of nice EA acceptances, and 7 apps sitting in RD. Case was a front runner. But, I think that’s the end of the line on case for us.
Good luck to everyone else whose 4.0 99% SAT kids were shafted. I’m sure there are schools out there that want them a lot more than Case seems to.
SAT: 1510; no SATIIs
GPA: ~3.9 UW (my school doesn’t calculate)
ECs: multiple leadership positions in both athletics and other associations; state and national championships; a couple internships; tri-varsity athlete (not recruited)
Courses: STEM focused, most rigorous courses taken except for one or two classes
S Deferred. Chemical Engineering 1530 SAT, 790 Math II, 730 physics, 720 chemistry
4.09 GPA
First in competitive class. 4 years varsity baseball, 3 years varsity soccer. Math team, peer mentor, history team.
Decent essay. Excellent LORs.
Interview and two visits (one for baseball).
Public rural school in New Hampshire. As many APs as were offered. 4sand 5s on AP tests.
8 AP (before senior): Human Geo(5), US Gov & Pol (5), CS Principles (5), US Hist (5), Phys C Mech (4), English L & Comp (5), Calc AB (5), Biology (4)
6 AP in the senior year: AP Calc BC, Compar. Gov, English Lit. & Comp, Phys C: E&M, Psychology, Statistics
You hit the nail on the head. Admissions officers are like used car salesmen. This hard sell on ED2 is a shakedown and scare tactic towards students who are already on edge …due to this crazy application process.
When you see schools deferring highly qualified candidates, then you know its all about yield protection. where does this end? ED3 next??
I would never say yes to a school who pushes ED2 in a deferral letter.
accepted EA!!
not my top school by any means but getting accepted after two deferrals this week feels nice
act: 36
gpa: 4.5 w, 4.0 uw
sat subject: 780 bio m and 770 math 2
pretty good rec letters and decent extracurriculars? not quite sure how do qualify mine because I don’t do that many things but I’ve been super devoted to my sport for like 10+ years
anyways congrats to everyone else that got in!
everyday, i get another email from a different college with an “offer” to move my EA application to ED2…funny all started happening right after the Ivy deferrals.
deferred…with a ED2 hard sell letter…i just pulled my application.
really did not want to apply, but my GC convinced me. Not annoyed about getting deferred. Annoyed because I felt the letter is on the shady side…and it’s not just Case. 5 emails in the last two days asking me to change to ED2.
GPA: 3.9 gpa -all honors courses at competitive National Blue Ribbon HS
Rank: School doesn’t rank but he should be in top 10%
SAT: 1480 one shot
Recs: Strong Recs
EC - He’s prez of NHS & on boards for other clubs, lots health volunteering, shadowing, health related programs & EMT squad with leadership. Part of Music ensemble for playing in senior homes & church pianist. Dance team for fun. Black belt in TKD.
AP: only Calc offered at his school, but school has dual enrollment credits.
No visit, Out of state. No interview, sent couple emails prior to submitting app.
We were bombarded DAILY for over a year with emails & snail mail.
Loved that they personalize it with something that he did.
Good luck for those deferred!
D deferred for Engineering
wGPA 3.95, uwGPA 3.75
4 APs including Physics x2, Statistics and History
ACT 32 Superscored - 34 Science, 34 English, 31 Math, 29 Reading

Not really surprised as so many seem to be deferred this round with even better stats than my D. CWRU being extremely picky this year by looks of it.
white girl, applied for aerospace engineering (but I think they don’t really look at this when admitting people bc of their open door policy…)
SAT: 1510 (super scored w/ 800 math, 710 English)
GPA: 3.77 (UW), 4.4 (W)
11.5 honors classes, 6 AP classes
Senior schedule: AP CS principles, Dual enrollment multivariable calc & linear algebra, AP Physics 12, astronomy, economics, english, art
EC: varsity swimming 4 years (1 year captain), varsity water polo 3 years (2 years captain), worked as a lifeguard over the summer for 2 years, worked to teach kids how to code 1 summer, did astronomy research at Northwestern University 1 summer
NOTE: at the end of my admittance letter is says “P.S. We are impressed with your commitment to swimming and water polo. Hope to see you at the Veale Athletic Center pool next fall!” , I also filled out the recruitment questionnaire (I never got a response from them so I kinda forgot about swimming for them) but I didn’t do anything else to show interest.
Perhaps they think I’m an athletic recruit? Maybe that helped me get in…
D accepted. No financial aid and no talk of merit scholarship. Will merit scholarships come later?
Major - Politics/economics minor theatre
1560 SAT
3.59 UW GPA at highly selective private school
Great theatre/writing portfolio - including 1 Act play, spoken word poetry , 13 productions and loads of solo and group singing performances. Will audition for theatre scholarship but without some sort of aid will not be able to attend.
To all those deferred - hang in there. My older daughter was deferred 2 years ago and then was accepted regular decision with a great scholarship.
She was super upset by the deferral and lost all interest in Case in the meantime. I think many great students are lost by the deferral process. Student is now very happy at the Colorado School of Mines studying geophysics engineering.
If I never submitted my tax returns or the verification form, and turn them in soon will they give me financial aid? I forgot to do those and their emails all went to junk mail so oops.
