“I’m trying to figure out how some previous posters came up to $1000/kid.”

Tickets are usually $200 a piece, and I was talking about girls and know nothing about what it would cost for a boy.

$200 for the ticket, $250 for the dress, mani-pedi $80, hair, $140, share of limo $300, shoes $70, accessories/undergarments $100. The schools usually sponsor an after-party which involves tickets as well.

Haven’t read this whole thread, but ds just went to the prom last night (in fact- he is still not home yet from the overnight party!)

The group he and his gf went to dinner and to the prom with consisted of 3 guys (one was a junior) and 8 girls. I only saw them at the pre-prom picture party (say that three times fast!) but they all looked gorgeous and very happy! They all rode in a limo to the prom together, Then he, gf and a bunch of other kids (not sure how many had dates and how many didnt) all went to a port prom overnight party in a few limos to someones lake house. I dont think it made much difference who did/did not have a date. I think they all had fun.

BTW–
S’s prom tickets were $40 per person, I believe, dinner (with tip and all) was $50 per person, and limo was also $50 per person. He owns his own tux, sdo that was paid for last yr. Even with his picking up gf’s dinner and prom ticket (they handled their own limo costs I believe) the cost is not quite what zoos described. $1000??? OUCH!!! Now, that said… some of the girls and their moms take a "prom dress shopping " trip to NY (this involves plane tickets, transportation and hotel). That adds a bit to the cost… ahem… Thank heavens I don’t have a girl!!!

I think the cost of prom varies a great deal by location. Also, some proms include dinner and some don’t. I have heard a rumor that tickets to the prom at D’s school are $300! D is going with her BF, and he told her that he will pay for tickets and limo because she has to buy a dress. It’s his prom, as D is only a soph - but now that I have heard how expensive the tickets are, I feel bad that he is spending that much money. Of course her dress was very expensive, and then there were the alterations (over $100 for alterations alone), shoes, bag, jewelry, hair, makeup, and mani/pedi. If she had to pay for her ticket and the limo, it would definitely have cost her over $1000. I am trying to talk H into coughing up some more money so I can at least offer to pay for D’s ticket. That’s a lot of money for a 17-year old to come up with - and she is very excited about going. H hasn’t agreed yet - he is still a little annoyed about the dress costing so much.

jym626 - I couldn’t help but notice that you are not hosting the post-prom party this year. Did those ultimate frisbee players wear you out, or was the offer of the lake house too good to pass up?

Also, does his hs always have such an early prom? Ours isn’t until the end of June!

Hey LIMOM!
That’s what we call “one trial learning”! One post prom party was ENOUGH for me! Fun, but enough!! We stopped by the house of the people who were hosting this year’s post prom party. They also had a pre prom picture party (say that 3 times fast!) for 75 kids/adults!! They win my award for saints of the year!!
My s and his gf were at another picture party and dinner b4 the prom, but went to the lake house afterwards. We stopped off at the house of the saintly family to drop off his and gf/s overnight bags and some roses!!DS rolled in around 3pm today and took a nap!

As for the prom-- it isn’t early. Graduation is ridiculously early-- May 10!! Many of them have to take AP exams after graduation, when they have no desire to set foot on campus. My s has to do that. I dont know how many APs are after graduation, but several are!

Luckily most kids go in groups here, too. Especially as jrs, most probably don’t have dates…what a relief. D2 says “what’s the big deal”? haha…you’ve got to know this awesome kid (she hates to go shopping, and hates to try on clothes)…her Dad and I went shopping tonight, looking at prom dresses for her!!!..and bought a great black dress (short but fancy) on sale for $48!!! We figure that even if she doesn’t end up wearing this for prom, she’ll get to wear it SOMETIME!!! Her sister gave her thumbs up, (after we emailed pics to her tonight…) um…no $1000 expenditures here…

Date paid her share of limo, prom ticket, tux rental and flowers for her.
It adds up quickly!

We hosted the pre-prom picture taking. I love to garden so designed little areas in the yard for photo opps. She went with a large group so we had more than 150 people here! Not all were “invited”…we had picture crashers!!! LOL! Served choc covered strawberries, fruit, shrimp, cheese and bars for something sweet. After the kids left the parents hung around and we had our own little impromptu get together when we offered up a glass of wine. Don’t know if D2 will go to prom this yr…we’ll find out soon as prom is at the end of May.

Strapless dresses require a strapless bra, not a standard wardrobe item for most teens. Other dresses are so sheer that they require a slip that has the correct straps, fit and length to provide coverage without showing. I don’t think anyone else is supposed to see this lingerie. At our house, they’re not, anyway…Relax.

yeah…lingerie that you never see.
I do have a funny story, though. hehe! D2 is long and lanky…5’8" and 100 lbs. She went to homecoming her sophomore yr and borrowed a dress that was strapless. She is a size 0, hard to find! Since it was borrrowed we couldn’t do much for alterations. I bought the sticky tape and the dress still wouldn’t stay up since …ummm…there wasn’t much to hold it up! We had to buy the stick on gel “thingies” to fill in the top of the dress! We never laughed so hard! What a memory! hmmmm…maybe that’s why she doesn’t mind not going to another dance!!!

pictures, northminnesota, we want pictures!!

A few yrs ago we went to a family event in Minneapolis in May. There happened to be HS prom going on int he hotel that same night. Also that same night they had a freak spring snowstorm-- over 6" of snow. Those poor girls in their heels and spaghetti strap chiffon dresses. They were cold… and it showed, if you get my drift…

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to find prom dresses that are not strapless and don’t have spaghetti straps? My 5’9"ish (5’10?) dancer D has awesome legs, is itty bitty around the waist, and has broad, bony shoulders. She’s better endowed than her mother (who isn’t?!) but those strapless (or almost) styles just don’t do it for her. Our back-up plan dress (the short one we found last night) is a pretty halter (altho dad is trying to figure out how many safety pins could be used to close that gap in front!!!) If REI sold prom dresses, she’d be set. Last week she said, “I don’t know what the big deal is, but if you want to dress me up like a Barbie doll, I’ll let you!!!” hahaha

Fortunately, my D didn’t have any trouble finding dresses that were not strapless this year - last year was more of a problem. This year, the trend seemed to be a little more conservative or elegant. Very few women or girls have the bodies for strapless gowns anyway - they either don’t have the shoulders for them or are too busty or too flat. It is not a very forgiving style and probably should be left to the beauty queen body types.

There’s a LOT of fashion that would be better left to the beauty queen body types…but someone needs to let the stores know this (or point out the actual % of the general population that fits that body type)!!!

LOL - that’s for sure. I think most women have no idea what they look best in - I’m sure I don’t know. I do find myself wincing at so many prom pictures though - and wonder why someone didn’t speak up before letting some dresses out of the store. Prom is a time when young girls are supposed to look their best but so many tend to choose dresses that are less flattering than jeans and a tee shirt.

I was in a store recently with my daughter, and I really wanted to shout to another girl who was trying on prom dresses, “Get the one that covers the tattoo!” But I restrained myself, even when she asked for a smaller size.

D and I saw some dresses that were some silky, shiny material that made the gut on the mannequin noticeable. OMG! If it makes the mannequin look fat, there’s a real problem there!
