**Dartmouth 2014 Waitlist Thread**

@light10491: I think it’s possible that the email that they sent out four or five days ago was the update that he was referring to. Though that would mean the update was a lot earlier than his estimate.

The way I heard it, if they get the usual number of students dropping their commitment they are going to have to find ways to get students to defer a year to avoid over enrollment. I guess maybe if somehow 150 students got off waitlists elsewhere, they would need to go to the waitlist. From what i heard, its just not going to happen

This is ridiculous.

And what does “The way I heard it, if they get the usual number of students dropping their commitment they are going to have to find ways to get students to defer a year to avoid over enrollment.” mean?

my question is… has ANYONE got off the dartmouth wait list? ANYONE?

Yeah this is seriously ridiculous…I have not even gotten an update e-mail yet

How many people do you think got/are going to be rejected in this first go-around?

“Dartmouth said its yield this spring was 55 percent. That is a 7 percentage point increase over last year — a jump so large that no applicant may be admitted from the waiting list this year, according to Maria Laskaris, the dean of admissions and financial aid. (Last year, 95 came off that list, she said.)”

I can’t say with 100% certainty that no one will be accepted off the waitlist, but it’s VERY unlikely. My advice would be to forget about the waitlist, get excited about the school you’re currently enrolled in, and enjoy the end of senior year without stressing over this.

Why would Dartmouth send out an update saying “your candidacy is still active” if they were positive that they weren’t going to take anyone off the waitlist? The first round of emails was narrowing the field and in about two weeks they will see where they stand in terms of class size and go from there. There is always the possibility of an enlarged class size…

Someone should call/email them asking if they are still considering enlarging their class size … and if so, if that is the reason why they haven’t completely trashed the waitlist yet.

Interested in how they would respond (esp. through phone) and if they’re just pulling us along pointlessly.

I feel like if they happen to accept people due to an enlarged class size, they would probably take full-pay students first… which is bad news for me. Finances is the reason that they’re considering the increase, yes?

Yodastreet,

My guess is that you are not too far off-base on this. I have no doubt that there are less rules as far as need blind when it comes to the waitlist. Things (if they happen at at all) happen fast with respect to waitlist candidates. There is probably a bias (intended or not) toward candidates who can accept quickly and ones who need less financial aid.

This year’s class has the highest yield Dartmouth has ever experienced. That alone does not determine anything, but is a significant factor when determining how many applicants a college can accept off its waitlist. IMO, the fact that Dartmouth sent that message means nothing. “Your candidacy is still active” could just mean that Dartmouth hasn’t released a final decision. The first two weeks of May are generally used to determine if there are openings in a class and to start re-reviewing waitlisted applicants. All I’m saying is that given recent circumstances, there is a slim chance anyone will be admitted off the waitlist, so just forget about it for the time being. If you happen to get a call and get accepted, that’ll be a good surprise. People are just investing too much time into waitlist statuses instead of enjoying what they already have.

@212Dad and Yodastreet…Before 5/1 I would have definitely been inclined to agree with your assessments; however, in our case at least, I’m now not so sure. My daughter was waitlisted at most of the ivys and did not check the financial aid box (full pay). As of right now, she hasn’t received a call, and if you saw her profile, I believe you’d agree she is a very competitive candidate. Who knows?!

@jc40: Well, I suppose this year is just hard on all waitlistees in general. Though at any rate, I was referring specifically to students that Dartmouth might take after increasing their class size: I assume the primary reason for that would be to increase income from tuition, and so they’d be more likely to take full-pay applicants. But I have no idea what effect full pay has for the waitlist at this stage.

Best of luck to your daughter, by the way :)

you know why this waitlist thread is getting nowhere?.. its cause when someone says, “dartmouth’s yield has increased beyong comprehension this year”, another asks “why have they still sent us a mail saying our candidacy is active?”… its just redundant, so until someone gets a mail / call that theyre accepted, i think we extended wait listers should just hope for the best… nd wait.

I second that yadart
Lets wait…nd wait…nd hold on2 THE faith…

But I still don’t understand why some of us still haven’t received any emails yet. Some of you have but many still haven’t.

I hope they aren’t just pointlessly pulling us along. It has been 2 months.

Yes, I was wondering about that too. None of the people who reported that they haven’t recieved emails after the “we’ll let you know in 3 weeks” one have since they, have they?

And whoa. I just realized it’s been two whole months :O
