Wow, You guys actually care about your children’s studies. Some are talking about dorms they got, some took their child on holidays and still some actually sit and talk to their children about their college.

Hi Dartmouth parents, Can you please suggest a decent hotel northwest of Boston? We want to stay there overnight before we head out to DOC the next day.

^^After spending all day flying into Boston from the west coast, we usually stay at the Residence Inn in Woburn. It costs less than the hotels closer to Boston and is conveniently located near the intersection of the 93 and 95 freeways - which makes heading into New Hampshire easy the next day.

If you want to stay a little farther north of Boston I can also recommend the Peabody Marriott.

Parent, if you want something more along the B&B/country inn line, I enjoyed the Fitzwilliam Inn in Fitzwilliam, NH years ago. It is close to Mt. Monadanock, which is a great day hike, if you want to have your own little DOC trip before delivering S or D to Hanover. :)

Father of a 15 here. We are looking forward to our S1 education / adventures in Hanover. From all that I read students are pretty content with life and studies up there which will make us happy. I was looking to plan a trip to catch a football game and thought of homecoming weekend but wondered from others if this is generally an alum setting. Any experianced thoughts on that.

The weekend of October 1st, Dartmouth will host the defending Ivy League Champion Penn Quakers in the first night game in the history of Memorial Field. The scene should be great! 6:00 kickoff with what I hope is a packed house to witness one of the best games of the year.

Greenthumb: I am the parent of a '14, not a Dartmouth alum, and I went last year for homecoming. Pro’s: You really get to see what they are experiencing. Lots of tradition, very upbeat atmosphere, good attendance at the football game. Con’s: First years are kept very busy that weekend, so you don’t get as much time with your kid as you might like. Overall, I loved being there for homecoming and I am planning on going again this year. Hope this helps! And congrat…Dartmouth is a very special place, and I’m sure your child with love it!

Greenthumb, I am planning on attending homecoming as well. I really just want to see my '15 run around the bonfire. I will not try to bother her. It is her weekend and I will just be a spectator. I can’t wait.

Do it Consolation. I never went when my '10 was at D. When my '15 visited him during homecoming, it pretty much sealed the deal for her. I made my hotel reservations for homecoming a week after she was accepted. My only problem is that there is another sibling at home who may fall in love with D.

I’m not an alum and went to Homecoming last year. What a blast!! Bonfire was cool.
Dr. Kim gave a great speech and the spirit was amazing. You all will have so much fun.
I’m going in early October for a visit. Recommend getting your hotels ASAP. Can’t wait!!

Looks like the predicted storm track for Hurricane Irene will take it right over Hanover on Sunday - just when my '13 daughter will be taking her last final of the summer session.

DS’s GF was in Puerto Rico last week for the first of Irene’s hits. Two million people in PR lost power. She is now planning to fly to Boston on Saturday and then take the bus up to Hanover. I think she’s going to get hit by Irene yet again . . .

I spoke to S today. Apparently he is planning to take his last final on the 29th, but says that there is some possibility of delay due to the hurricane. I would tend to doubt it.

D called and said her Sunday final has been pushed back to Tuesday due to the hurricane. Now the exam will conflict with her flight home instead of the storm.

Bummer! I guess he was correct after all. We are lucky in that picking him up involves a 3 hr drive, not a flight. And next week my schedule is fairly clear.
