Daughter need help in preparing for State championship in Speech.

Hi, we live in socal. My D has advanced to state championships for original oratory. Her school does not have a speech team(only debate). So we were told to get help from someone who is majoring in theatre and has experience with voice and speech training.

If anyone in cc is willing to help or has suggestions please help us.The competition is in April (19-21).So time is crucial.

Do you have a reputable community or regional theatre in your area? If so, I would start by calling them and telling them what you are looking for which is someone to coach her. You can also call the English Speaking Union and see if they have any members in your area. Hope that helps.

My H is a professional speaker (no surprise our S wants to be an actor). The association for professional speakers is The National Speakers Association. The association has chapters across the country and there is a large chapter in the LA area. You can contact the chapter to see if there is anyone who specializes as a speaking coach and is willing to provide guidance to a high school student. Not sure if you are looking to pay someone to assist since you mentioned looking for someone “majoring in theatre and has experience with voice and speech training.” If you are looking for a volunteer, it is possible that a chapter member who does coaching would spare an hour or two to provide pointers to your D, particularly as she is participating in state championships. Hope this is helpful.

Speech and theatre are actually very different disciplines, what a speech competition will be grading on will be different than what a theatre competition would.
