Davidson Residence Hall

How is this hall compared to the others on Busch? And what is with the letters A, B, C, D?

A bit of info on Davidson (2 or 3 pics included) –> [Rutgers University Housing Residence Life](http://housing.rutgers.edu/ie/index.php?page=content/Common/Halls/Busch/Davidson.php)

The A, B,C, D is given because Davidson Hall is a “cluster of four one-story buildings” (I got this off the housing page because I didn’t know any better way to describe it, hehe  )

I tend to hear more people rave about the BAMM dorms on Busch more, but I think that’s because there are more people situated there. I do hear though from the kids who do stay in Davidson that they liked it because it was more close-knit. After all, there’s only one floor in each building. I think Davidson is a bit smaller in dorm room size compared to the BAMM dorms as well.

I didn’t live there, so unfortunately I can’t elaborate into better details, but I hope the housing site gives you somewhat of an idea of what the dorm looks like. :)

Davidson Hall(s) is a set of prefabricated buildings built in 1961 to accommodate the influx of new students during the post war boom. The A,B,C, D refers to the specific building. It originally meant to be temporary, but clearly, that is not the case. The dorms do not have air conditioning and they are all single story buildings. I believe, but I’m not positive, that it is single sex by wing. The buildings are all shaped like an H and there is a lounge in the middle cross bar area between wings. I have heard that they had bug problems in past years, but that’s probably all cleared up by now. There are not built in closets, so floor space in the room is taken up by a tall wardrobe that makes the room smaller than a room of similar square footage elsewhere. All in all, it’s not one of Rutgers’ best dorms and probably the worst dorm on Busch. Still, it’s all about what you make of it. I’ve seen worse.

to back up beastmorgan, there is an all-male wing, all-female wing, and a co-ed wing. the bathrooms have been recently redone (like three years ago) so they’re all sparkly and newish. the rooms are a bit on the small side, but bunking the beds helps. i have heard of the termite problems as well, but nothing recently. and definitely not the best dorm on busch size-wise, but some people do enjoy it.

do you know which of the davidson buildings (A, B, C, D) is co-ed/ all-male/ all-female?

i have davidson D…and i wonder if it’s all-girls or co-ed…
does anyone know if the wardrobes are closable? or do we need like a curtain to cover them?

I’m also wondering about the beds. Are they bunk beds? (I’m in Davidson C)

A is all-male, D is all-female

You can close the wardrobes, they’re all closets separate from the wall. It is its own unit.

The letters aren’t actually wings, but 4 separate buildings.

The beds don’t come bunked, but you can request housing to bunk or loft them. It’s not a big deal. Just keep in mind that it’s really hot during the first two months and the person who gets the bed on top is going to have to deal with all the hot air being so close to the ceiling.

The BAMM dorms are generally considered better because the rooms are larger and air-conditioned. The way the rooms are designed, it heats up to 90 degrees inside during the day and it’s not much better at night.

Other things you should get specifically for Davidson are a lamp and huge fan. The stand-up ones that are vertical work really well. A lamp because the lights suck and it’s dim at night.

Feel free to ask anymore questions. I lived there freshmen year.

Is the space in the room decent? I bought a normal stand up fan (windmill and all), and I rather not bring it if it’s just going to take up space. I thought it would be more effective than a tower fan though it’s less space consuming.

How far are the BAMM dorms from Davidson Hall?

Davidson was actually a converted army barrack so it’s missing a lot of nice things that the other dorms have. Other freshmen dorms have a floor lounge for misc. use as well as a building study lounge and a building lounge with a piano, pool table, huge 72" tv, etc whereas Davidson only has one lounge with everything crammed into one.

The rooms like I said are more cramped than the BAMM dorms, but it’s decent. As a freshmen, I was just excited with the whole experience and didn’t feel cramp until I saw how much space other dorm rooms had.

I brought a normal stand-up fan my first year so there’s enough room for that. If you’re unlucky, you’ll get a room facing the afternoon sun which captures all the heat. I don’t know how to describe the windows to you. They’re the kind where you have to wind up and the panel only opens 6 inches or so to let air in. Pretty ineffective, so bring your best fan! Some parents buy their kids a portable a/c. It works pretty well. Something you might want to consider if you parents can afford it.

It’s about a 10 min walk from between the BAMM dorms and Davidson. Google map tells me it’s about a half mile. You can walk to see your friends but you can also just take the bus. It’s 2 stops away.

Hi Daedallia

Are we allowed to bring portable air conditioners? Because on the website it says not to bring air conditioners…

You are not allowed to bring an air conditioner. Everything Daedallia said is true except that they were formerly army barracks. They were prefabricated buildings built specifically for Rutgers in 1961 for surge capacity My source is Mason Gross himself from a historical video I saw on RU-TV. Even he said that they were, “…anything but capacious.” Still, Livingston campus is the campus that was more or less camp Kilmer. Even some the old army buildings are still there. I think they’re used for maintenance.

[RU-tv: Rutgers Channel](http://rutv.rutgers.edu/online.shtml) --------- the video, Rutgers retrospective.

You’re not allowed to bring a portable air conditioner, but there’s no way they would find out. During a room check, a firefighter comes in and glances around the room. If they spot anything you’re not allowed to have (besides something completely illegal like alcohol/drugs), they tell you to remove it. You agree and then don’t. They don’t come back. If you’re not in the room, they just knock and never come back. There are room checks once a semester.

My bad on the army barracks. I was wondering whether I should’ve said that since it was mostly hearsay, but I googled it before I wrote the comment and got a few hits so thought it must have been true.

Yeah, I thought so too until I saw the video. To be honest, army barracks would probably be constructed the same way anyway. Either way, they really ought to replace them. The pictures on the housing website make it look like you really can’t get by without bunking the beds, although my theory is that you would actually gain a little more room by lofting both beds and putting the desks and other stuff under them.

Yep. I’d originally wanted to loft my bed to put my desk under it, but my roommate was the one who brought up how hot it would be as she’d done that in her room in Douglass. You have to loft the bed pretty high to comfortably include a desk and chair so it’s better to do it a month in when it’s not as hot.

I’m also dorming in Davidson again this year so if anyone has any questions, they could probably knock on my door. lol

Wait, Davidson is not just for freshmen?

I never knew that! I wanted to live on Busch again but couldn’t find people to live in the suites (and I really didn’t want an apartment).

All the singles on Busch are in Davidson. They go by amount of credits as well as lottery # so they’re easier to get the older you are. It’s an easy way to bypass the lottery mess. Consider that, freshmen, when you’re fighting for a spot in a suite or apt.

I lived in the suites sophomore year, but I would’ve loved the apartments! They’re better in my opinion. Any reason why you dislike them?

ohh okay thanks Daedallia! How bad is the heat? Does it start to cool off mid-september?

The problem with the rooms is that they store a lot of heat so the night air or cooler weather won’t necessarily lower the room temperature. You can expect to be baking for most of September and just hot for half of October. April and May can be almost as bad.

90F outside feels like 95F inside, 80 feels like 90, 70 feels like 85. I’m not even exaggerating as there’s a room thermometer which you can check. It’s hard to dress correctly for the weather outside because it’s that different, but just check the weather online before going out and you should be fine.

I can’t stress how important fans are. :(

on the bright side (ha), its like winter more than half the year
