Day in the life of a highschool student

8th grader here, taking some highschool credit classes. Just wanna know what your days usually are like in highschool so I can prepare haha

spending 7 hours of your day with people you hate, unnecessary work, insane amounts of homework, pointless projects, rude teachers.
you could say it’s pretty good

For me at least, I don’t think I had “insane” amounts of homework - although a sizable amount of that homework was just pointless busy-work. Most of my fun HS experiences were outside of class (through EC’s or other things).

Besides the school part and studying, you’ll probably make a lot of friends through your ECs. My whole friend group consists of marching band friends. Without them, I’d be lost.

6:30 - 7:30 AM Shower, help my brothers get dressed, eat, finish any unfinished homework
8:00 AM - 9:00 AM Get help with homework, attend AM tutoring, finish assignments, talk to teachers, registrar, counselor, morning club meetings
9:00 AM - 11:30 AM Morning classes! Usually this is when you’ll work your best, unless you’re really tired in the mornings.
12:15 - 12:49 PM Lunch! Work on homework, eat, socialize, minor club officer meetings sometimes
1:00 - 3:00 PM Afternoon classes. Your focus is probably dwindling and you’re beginning to anxiously look at the clock. It’s common to make slightly lower grades in your PM classes than your AM classes.
3:00 - 4:00 PM I can’t even focus 7th period. Most of the period is spent staring at the clock waiting for 4, unless you’re really focused, then good on you! Once class lets out you’ll socialize, make your way to your ECs and club meetings, attend PM tutoring
5:00 - 9:00 PM Homework, study, eat, and then sleep.

^ That’s generally how my school week goes, on Fridays 4:00 PM means extra celebration.

On weekends, I’ll goof off, work on projects and homework, play video games, volunteer if the opportunity arises, or work on ECs.

Even if you’re taking high school credit classes in middle school, be prepared for a jump in homework and rigor, ESPECIALLY if you plan on taking AP classes and joining a bunch of clubs.

5:30 Wake up and get ready
6:30 Catch bus
7:00 Get to my first period to help my calc teacher
7:30-3:00 School…don’t take 7 APs in one year if you don’t plan to be suffering like I am
3:00-5:00 Clubs, etc
5:30-1:00 Homework, studying, chores, etc.
1:30/whenever I get sleepy – Sleep

Weekends I volunteer, try to get ahead on homework, and go out.

Freshman year was more like:

5:30 Wake up and get ready
6:30 Catch bus
7:00 Get to my first period to help my geometry teacher
7:30-3:00 School – don’t lose focus freshman year and have a clearly definitive goal. I made many mistakes freshman year, including not following the advice I’m giving you now.
3:00-4:00 Clubs, etc
4:30-6:00 Homework, studying, chores, etc.
6:00-9:00 Whatever I felt like doing–usually reading
9:00 Sleep

Here’s my senior year:
5:45 Wake up and get ready
6:35 Get on bus
7:45-2:15 School (4 classes at 1.5 hours each, 25 minute lunch)
2:20-3:00 either do homework in library or attend club meetings
3:15-5:30 soccer or track practice
5:45-7:00 eat dinner, read, procrastinate
7:00- 12:00ish do homework, study, practice viola
12:00-? read or watch Netflix… I’m normally asleep by 1ish, though I’m up until like 3 a few times each month doing homework
Repeat.

Not much has changed since freshmen year, just classes have gotten and I’ve had to actually study since junior year.

As for weekends, I typically have a track meet all day Saturday, so I relax Friday night and Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon and evening is my homework time.

My academic advice would to avoid procrastination, do whatever homework you can during the day, and don’t be afraid to go to teachers for extra help. Most of all, don’t stress about the transition to high school! My experience thus far has been unimaginably better than junior high school. Study hard, but don’t forget to have fun in the process!

7:15: wake up and get ready (I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t care so I kinda just roll out of bed, Freshman year when I showered in the mornings instead of night and actually cared it was a lot earlier)
7:35–get in the car and drive to school (when I took the bus I had to leave my house at 7:15 to catch a 7:20 bus)
7:50-2:35: school.
2:35–5:30: Rehearsal! I do so much theatre that this is basically year round tbh. Basically until 5-6 people are usually doing activities
5:45-7:30: Procrastination (don’t do this) and dinner
8:00-12:00 or 12:30: Panic and do all my work, study, play music if I have some extra time, shower
12:30: In bed

Weekends I sleep in and spend most of my time doing homework!

6:30 Wake up, eat breakfast, get dressed
7-7:30 Go to school (My parents have to take me, because I can’t pass my Driver’s test)
7:50-11:30 Morning classes (math, French, and half of English)
11:30-12 Lunch!
12-2:50 Afternoon classes(Other half of English and Human Body Systems)
2:50-4 I have club meetings.
4-4:30 Get driven home
4:30-5:30 Practice Piano
5:30-6:30ish DERP
6:30-7ish Dinner with my fam
7-8 Gym
8-10 homework
10-11:30 homework, reading, or DERP

Unless it’s a bad day. Then it’s like
6:30 Wake up, eat breakfast, get dressed
7-7:30 Go to school (My parents have to take me, because I can’t pass my Driver’s test)
7:50-11:30 Morning classes (math, French, and half of English)
11:30-12 Lunch!
12-2:50 ( Other have of English and Human Body Systems)
2:50-4 I have club meetings.
4-4:30 Get driven home
4:30-5:30 homework
5:30-6:30ish DERP
6:30-7ish Dinner with my fam
7-8 homework
8-10 homework
10-??? homework

Bad days happen about once every two weeks. Not to bad though, just stressful for a bit.

4:30-6:30 Time frame I wake up
6:30-7:30 Get ready and drive to school
7:30-8:27 frantically do hw b4 class
8:27-3:20 classes & fantasizing my death
3:20-5 friends and stuff
5-10 pretend to/attempt to/actually do hw or just give up and converse with friends
10-1ish talk to my gf
rinse repeat

2nd semester senior so my work ethic is gone and I dropped all my ECs

6 AM: Wake up
6-7: Get ready for school
7 AM: Leave for school
7:10-7:20 (depending on the traffic/traffic lights): Arrive at school, hang out at the library and talk to friends
7:45-3:15: Classes. Meh. Usually if I have free time in my last class I’ll get started on/finish homework that is due the next day.
3:30-3:40 (depending on traffic): Arrive at home
3:40-8: Finish up homework, eat dinner, study, hang out with family, procrastinate on CC
8-9: Gym with my dad
9-10:30/11/as late as 12: Get ready for bed, procrastinate on CC, study, watch Netflix.

Some days my schedule varies as I have after school activities and some days I hang out with friends. But for the most part that’s how my day goes.

7:30 AM Wakeup and get ready for school
8:00 Drive to school
8:15 - 3:30 Classes - typically consist of wasting time listening to a teacher regurgitate a textbook and perusing the anxiety riddled posts by kids and helicopter parents on CC
3:30 - 5:30 Soccer, XC, Track depending on the season and/or game schedule
5:30 - 7:00 Hang with friends at food trucks or fast food place
7:00 - 9:00 Visit with parents, watch a show, maybe eat some dinner again,
9:00 - 10:00 Workout
10:00 - whenever - homework, procrastinate, ponder life, homework,
Too late - crash

Weekends consist of soccer or meets during the day, friends and parties at night and homework Sunday night

5:00am wake up
5:10 drag self out of bed
5:10-6:10 usual morning activities
6:15 leave for school
6:30 arrive at school
6:30-7:00 hang out with friends, finish hw, etc
7:00-11:30 AM classes
11:30-12:10 lunch
12:10-2:20 PM classes
2:20-4:00 ecs
4:00-9 or 10: studying
10:30 shower then sleep

7:00-7:30 Wake up, get ready, leave for school.
8:20-9:40 Block 1
9:50-11:10 Block 2
11:15-12:35 Block 3
12:35-1:15 Lunch, attend club meetings
1:20-2:40 Block 4
2:40-3:15 After classes required things (ex: assembly, advisory, class meeting)
3:30 - 5:30 Bowling, if during the season. If not, work on homework
3:30-6:00 Academic team, if a Monday
6:00/6:30 Get home, take a nap, do some work
7:30-8:00 Dinner
8:00-10:00 Shower, do some work, spend some time goofing off
10:00-12:00 Do more work (sometimes can go to 2:00 if a bad day)

Weekends are either full of an EC activity, so I do most of my work Sundays.

1 piece of advice form me: try to work ahead in homework

7:30-7:40 Wake up, get dressed, leave for school (I don’t eat breakfast on most days)
8:20-9:00 Assembly
9:10-10:25 Block 1
10:35-11:50 Block 2
11:50-12:50 Eat lunch and attend club meetings
12:50-2:05 Study hall, I usually just read, can’t do any actual work when I’m surrounded by others
2:15-3:30 Block 4
3:30-4:00 Get home
4:00-6:00 Take a quick nap
6:00-7:00 Dinner
7:00-8:00 Procrastinate on doing work
8:00-11:00 Homework
11:00-12:00 Shower, check emails, talk to friends

I usually fall asleep around 12:30-1:00, allowing me 6.5 hours of sweet sweet dreams  Saturdays are for Netflix and ECs, Sundays are for sleeping in and frantically completing hw at night. This schedule isn’t an accurate depiction right now thanks to senioritis, but I’m looking forward to developing a good schedule in college!

My advice would be to find ECs that you like, but keep a good balance between personal life and academics, do hw right when you’re assigned, and study for tests at least 2-3 days in advance. Also if the class is difficult, try to make a class fb group so you can help your classmates and get your questions answered!
