DC/Georgetown Tips Please!

So DH and I are biking on the C&O Canal from either Harpers Ferry or Lessburg (VA) to DC on July 4 for the fireworks. We’ll be staying at the GT suites for a night.

For you DC experts out there, do you have any good GT restaurant recommendations for dinner and breakfast? We will be carrying some clothes with us but not much so it can’t be fancy (I’ll pack my black patent-leather flip flops…very light!)

Are the fireworks good from the GT waterfront or should we get ourselves to the mall?

Lastly, we’re looking at trans options to get us back to our car. So far, the cheapest I can find is a van for $150…Yikes! We just might bring two cars although that would be a BIG hassle. Any thoughts? Is there public trans going in that direction?

Thanks for any help!

I think you should get yourself to the mall for the fireworks. Join the throngs! Hear the noise! The Lincoln Memorial area works pretty well.

I’m not up enough on the current restaurant scene, but there have been good threads recently on DC travel with suggestions.

Both times we did college visits to Gtown we ate at The Tombs

[The Tombs :: About Us :: Our History](http://www.tombs.com/main/home.cfm?Category=About_Us&Section=Our_History)

We also enjoyed The Tombs when we visited Georgetown. Also good is the Tackle Box and we had lunch at Mie N Yu one day which was wonderful- they treated D like a princess! I’m not sure about their dinners- may be pricey and a bit more dressy.

Since you’re going for the 4th of July, how about some all-american barbeque. Old Glory is great and conveniently located on M Street.

[Old Glory Bar-B-Que, Washington DC. True Q – and a helluva view](http://www.oldglorybbq.com/)

Also, Billy Martin’s up on Wisconsin is pretty good as well:

[Martin’s Tavern | Georgetown, Washington D.C., pubs and restaurants in Washington DC, celebrating 75 years](http://www.martins-tavern.com/)

I was going to recommend Martin’s too. I used to go there with my brother when he lived in Georgetown (just around the corner). Wonderful old tavern. Great soft-shell crab (if it’s in season).

Thanks all for the suggestions. These seem like good “flip-flop friendly” restaurants.

No luck finding a reasonably priced shuttle so far…so DH and I will probably bike back. That’s 70+ miles over 2 days but we have lots of time and should be fine. Better than forking over $150 plus tip!

[Maryland Transit Administration](<a href=“https://www.mta.maryland.gov/services/marc/schedulesSystemMaps/brunswick.cfm%5dMaryland | Maryland Transit Administration”>https://www.mta.maryland.gov/services/marc/schedulesSystemMaps/brunswick.cfm | Maryland Transit Administration) runs from Union Station to Harper’s Ferry and points in between that may or may not be convenient to the C&O trail. [Amtrak[/url] does as well. In both cases, I think you’d need an afternoon/evening departure from DC, but check the websites.

I don’t know about transportation to/from Leesburg. If you have a street address in Leesburg, you could check for connections at [url=http://www.wmata.com/rider_tools/tripplanner/tripplanner.cfm]WMATA - Rider Tools - Trip Planner](http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/HomePage) If you would take the Red Line Metro to Shady Grove, you could connect with the Ride On Bus No. 76 to Poolesville [
Montgomery County Department of Transportation - Montgomery County, MD](http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/tsvtmpl.asp?url=/content/dot/transit/routesandschedules/allroutes/route076.asp</a>) which would mean about a 6 mile ride to White’s Ferry and then another short-ish ride to Leesburg. White’s Ferry landing (Maryland side) has a campground and might be an alternate place to leave your car.

Have fun!

Thanks happymom! Some good options. But I don’t think Amtrak and other public trans would let us roll on/store our bikes (although there seems to be a big need for this!). And we are looking for morning departures - and on a holiday. The shuttle prices I’m getting are expensive due to the need for bike storage (they won’t fit in a Lincoln Town car like one guy tried to convince me!).

One alternative is to take a train or taxi ourselves and then drive back to get our bikes…but that seems like a hassle too. So I think we’ll be getting more exercise on the way back…and soaking in our big tub that night!

Metro takes bikes except at certain hours. On the 4th a bike might be a no-no, but on the 5th headed out of town after rush hour it would be no problem. Almost all of the Ride On Buses have bike racks on the front of them that hold 2 bikes. Contact them for details. Amtrak takes bikes, but you may have to check them as luggage (again, give them a call). What I don’t know about is the MARC train, so you would definitely need to call them!

My Mom travels by Amtrack from NJ to VA and I have seen people get off with bikes. I would call them.

We’ve eaten here several times and always have a great meal.

^^^
Wow…love seafood…you think they’re OK with flip flops?

Don’t know your “cup of tea”, and I’ll make no moral judgments, but I attended some fantastic strip bars there just a few years ago. It was clean, it was no brothel, there was absolutely no touching, just fellows enjoying the beauty of the female figure.

^^^lol…I don’t THINK so (and no I won’t tell DH about it!)

Anyway, we decided to bag the shuttle and bike back on the W&O trail to turn it into a nice loop trip. It’s longer, over 80 miles total but the W&O is asphalt and flat so, after hitting some big hills to get to that trail, it should be easy going. Excited! And I hope it doesn’t pour rain! BTW, just love the BikeWashington website…lots of good info.
