Yesterday I heard on the radio to expect to see pumpkin beer early. Today I saw it in the grocery. Not a pumpkin person myself, though, so I’m in for a season of looking for other fall tastes.
I think the pumpkins must have a really strong lobby.
I did a tasting of a pumpkin beer last year (for the life of me, I can’t even remember the brewery let alone the name of it). I didn’t even finish my sample. It was GROSS and I’m one of those who rarely meets a beer I don’t like.
I’m enjoying white peaches, mango peaches, nectarines, plums, pluots, and all the summer fruit. Apples I can get year round.
@abasket, if you want to get your apple fix, follow Southern Living on Pinterest, Instagram, or Twitter. The September issue is all about the apple.
@abasket Try making some apple cinnamon pancakes. They are sooo good.
A specific recipe??? ^^^ Just some chopped apples and cinnamon flavoring? I can see adding some pecans!
First of all, let’s not forget blueberry pie, which is the perfect summer pie especially if made with wild blueberries.
Then, in late September, apple pie, preferably with vanilla ice cream, is the most heavenly dessert when the cool weather starts to arrive (this hasn’t happened yet).
In November (or possibly October) yes, pumpkin pie is definitely something to look forward to. Part of its specialness is its seasonality so I agree that it cannot be rushed, or extended past its proper time.
I would not go for pumpkin pretzels or anything like that. However, I will say that pumpkin ice cream can be pretty darn good.
No…the best pie is blueberry peach pie! Delish.
It’s not Thanksgiving yet. Don’t make me think of pies.
Don’t think of pies because it is not Thanksgiving? @DrGoogle has officially lost her mind! Unless she means that Thanksgiving is the time to give thanks for the prior summer’s sour cherry pies, peach pies, ollalieberry pies, nectarine pies, apricot pies, and sour plum pies, tarts, tortes and galettes of all description.
If that’s what you mean, Dr. Google, then I agree. The time for thinking about pies has almost passed.
God I really want an apple pie now…
Why do I read food threads at midnight?
@nottelling , I might get a pie for Labor Day now that you mentioned it. Where is the best pie place in Southern California?
My sister’s house! She makes homemade pies with fresh summer fruit. Honestly, I don’t know where to buy the best pie but if you find out let me know. The secret is that it can’t be too sweet! Seriously, if you find a good one let me know!
I buy my pies from Polly’s.
for you, @abasket…to ease you in to the September/October season…

Oh my gosh @gosmom that looks delicious!! And easy too, yay
Well, that’s the best of both worlds I guess Gosmom!!
This is not the best thread for me as I bake pumpkin ‘something’ all year long. But I also make a mean apple pie. Last year I had a Halloween pumpkin that lasted till the following July. I didn’t have the heart to throw it out. I think it might have made it to another Halloween except the painter set it in the sun to paint the backporch. It just withered away like an ancient vampire. But I have digressed. Living in Florida, you don’t get a good sense for the seasons. I’m find with apples or pumpkins anytime.
Forget pumpkin. CoffeeMate has their Christmas flavors on store shelves here.
