December 2008 sat

The angles problem was interesting. I put only Angle 1, which I’m sure of.

Unless someone wants to try to convince me otherwise ; )

I had a question - I didn’t even know we had to write an essay for the SAT, and I was blitzed by it. My essay was okay, but I didn’t use any examples from life or literature or anything to prove my point. I argued cohesively, and I wrote very well, but I didn’t have any references to Genghis Kahn or what I did last Tuesday.

Is the grading so formulaic that this will hurt me?

Unfortunately, it is very formulaic and your score might suffer. What matters most is length. It’s hard to do 2 pages without specific examples, which will be the reason you’d lose points.

If you somehow got 2 pages anyways then you could be ok

There was also a math question(possibly experimental) that included parallel lines with two transversals except it said figure was not drawn to scale, which means one of them possibly was not a transversal. I said the answer could not be determined.

what? was this section 8?

Ouch, how much no errors did the people with 800s get? I got 3…

about that last CR question, the answer was CERTAINLY that they are critical of different institutions. i am sure of it. i scored an 800 on CR last time and an 80 on the PSAT, and I am not doubtful about this question at all.

and lolzors, I had the carpet making and the gardening too, so I dont know which was experimental either =/

For writing, I think I had 3 no errors too. 3-4, but I’m thinking I put 3.

I want another 800. One question could screw me over. Oh well. Nobody even cares about writing =(

Was one of your "No Error"s a sentence that started with “That”?

I do not recall, sorry. You need to be more specific.

One “no error” was the fraternal twins one, for sure. I don’t remember the other two. Sorry

yes i had the same fraternal twins question but i dont remember a “that” question either…btw did either of u guys have either a CR passage on gardening or carpetmaking?

I had gardening

k the only question on the test i was questioning was the one with the “invidious distinctions”, i think i got it wrong; it asked which of the following would be most like those invidious distinctions: A) a farmer plants (something i don’t remember) instead of flowers of B) a farmer rips out weeds that were growing onto something or something like that

I put the one about ripping out weeds. I’m pretty sure we’re both right

I also got ripping out weeds.

I’m pretty sure the carpet one was experimental. Would you mind explaining why that last question was “critical of different institutions” and can’t be “Passage 1 shows a concern and 2 says its benefits” or “Both passages disagree but propose similar solutions?”

wait for the angle math question…was the answe really Angle 1 and Angle 2? I put down Angle 1 only…

no, Angle 1 only. It was angle 1 for sure, and if it were angle 2 too than it would also have to be angle 3 (by the “transversal postulate” i think?), and there was no option for “1, 2, and 3”

So who knows when scores are coming out??
I was under the impression that we’d get them on Christmas, but then I got the email today that said they would be available online December 23rd. Plus wouldn’t the College Board be closed on Christmas? Why would they put up scores on Christmas morning?

the website is correct. they updated it i think. i heard dec 25 orginially too

For the one about the invidious distinctions, Thoreau dealt with the distinctions among different types of plants; thus, I chose A because it discriminated between herbs and flowers. The one about weeds (ivy, I think?) had to do with the boundary between properties instead so I didn’t choose that one. I think that may have been a trick question because it mentioned a species of plant seen as invasive, but the crux seemed to be elsewhere.

Hmmmm…

I got the one with ripping weeds out. I don’t remember the specifics, but I remember being able to eliminate all the rest. Anyone else care to comment on this one? I wouldn’t exactly call myself “qualified” for the CR section as it’s my weakest area :P

For the math, did anyone else have that question about 9 students in a math club or something, and 10 in an academic one. Then it said that 11 were involved in only ONE club, how many from the math club are involved in both?

For whatever reason, I over thought this one, or got tripped up on the wording, but still ended up with four using some weird logic.

Then I thought about it afterwards and realized 4 has to be right. What did you guys get?

I think I still got my 800 in math… Last time I missed ONE and was downgraded to 770 :(
