Decisions Are Up!

dood, ucsd admissions>slice bread. dont hate

Come on guys, it’s one thing to be bitter about a rejection, it’s another to completely bash the school. The school has its reasons for what it does, and how ever one might disagree with how they do things, it’s no excuse to ridicule UCSD. The school isn’t “worse off” per se if someone doesn’t go to it, and neither are most of you over-achievers that didn’t get in either.

im not ‘hating’. its just that if you look through these threads and ask those rejected by sd, there are tons that are qualified (if anything, over qualified) and didnt get accepted.

im just saying it how it is. UCSD admissions selection sucks. there are tons of criticisms (not only from myself) about their process.

why else do you think ‘harder’ schools take different approaches? because the point system sucks and does adequately present the prospective student (especially when they award a ludicrous amount points for stupid things like first generation college student, etc)

I think they’re criticizing the process by which they were rejected/selected and not the school that performed it.

nor am i “hating”. i really do find it a bit conceited, though. i dont know anything about the admissions process, except if a lot of overqualified people didnt get in then it must suck.

gogogo - There may be “tons” that are qualified and over-qualified that didn’t get in, but that doesn’t negate the fact that there’s an insane amount of people that ARE qualified and over-qualified that DID get in. There’s always anomalies (which always seem to get more emphasis than everything else, making the institution look worse than it actually is), but that doesn’t mean one should detract anything from the institution.

I agree how the system is somewhat flawed, but that’s not the kind of post I’m talking about. I’m talking about the posts that associate an over achieving applicant’s failure to be admitted with a shoddy institution in general on UCSD’s part. The admissions process is sort of messed up, but UCSD can still be hunky dory with or without the acceptance of over-qualified students, most of whom won’t be matriculating anyways.

well UCSD has no right to assume that we ‘over-achievers’ would have not been thrilled to be part of the UCSD campus. like i said, i would have given up CAL or LA for UCSD any day.

and im not putting down SD in anyway- i love the school, i visit it whenever i can. in my earlier post, i praised its bio program.

im just a bit frustrated/ curious as to why they would reject so many highly qualified students and accept so many under qualified students.

what makes it worse is that we were expecting to get accepted (and i would have gladly taken the offer and gone to SD). and the underqualified students are stupified and have no clue why they got in.

i was being playful earlier, but i agree w/ you that the admissions process is flawed. actually im still having a hard time believing that you guys got rejected (I sorta feel like you guys are lying and didnt actually get rejected lol_.

haha TRUST me. i wouldnt lie.

i really had my heart set on it too. ive literally been crying for 24 hours straight. my keyboard is getting soggy.

damn gogogo, i feel really bad for you. :(

If you feel so passionate about UCSD, this would be the textbook case for an appeal. Make something up to initiate an appeal and such. Your stats seriously would’ve been a shoo in but UCSD evidently didn’t want to admit someone who wouldn’t matriculate. If you appeal, that shows a lot of devotion to the school and it’s a VERY good chance you’d get in.

haha i love you the brian

and trust me i have nothing against SD. and its pretty sad because i remember being really into it since 9th grade. im so pathetic :(

oh and peppers about appealing, im not so sure because i read that the average percent appealed is usually around 7%. and i dont know what i would say in my letter. “oh please SD take me take me take me.” erk . ha. oh and i was considering making up an illness (cancer or something) haha but would feel so bad, and plus they require documentation.

hahaha. i was actually at work (grocery store) and my mom called the store and had them tell me to call her (she’d found out from CC that they’d posted). the only reason she did so is because she was so SURE i’d get in. she had me tell her my ID and PW on the phone, and informed me that “uhhh, you didn’t get in”. i ranted at her and told her that she was an idiot for interrupting me, that she’d ruined my day, and that i hated her for about five minutes and then i got over it. it was actually really hilarious looking bacck.

haha yeah thats pretty funny.

okay well i found out on friday night. i had just gotten home from disneyland (happiest place on earth), and i was getting ready for bed. when my boyfriend got home after he dropped me off at my house, he called me and told me that he got accepted. and he was like “oh go check!”. i guess he assumed i would get in because i had higher stats then him.

but yeah i didnt. ruined my day

hmm the most plausible reason ppl w/ really high stats got rejected might be because UCSD thinks they won’t matriculate @ their school. So, if you were one of them and really have your heart set on SD, then I’d advice you all to appeal. UCSD is good for engineering in general and really good for bio-related stuffs and also social sciences programs like psych, econ & etc…

A note to turningblind & gogogo: I think you guys should definitely appeal. SD’s bioengineering program is one of the best in the nation but you guys are qualified!!! My deepest empathies for those who had a chance and didn’t get in as well. All in all, if you have your heart set on a certain school, plz appeal. I think there was a girl who got into berkeley after appealing for the third time! So, don’t give up…

This whole “overqualified” thing bothers me. There is no such thing as “overqualified” because there is no entitlement. It doesn’t matter if you had a 4.9 GPA, 2500 on the SATs. Hell, it doesn’t even matter if you had cancer. Just because you achieved something or struggled doesn’t entitle you to anything. There will always be someone with lower stats than you who got in somewhere that you didn’t, or got a job or internship that you didn’t. Just like there will always be someone who works harder than you do, who struggles more than you could even imagine but can still barely afford to eat. There are geniuses with schizophrenia who can’t function and there are morons who got lucky and make billions. The kid who slacked off all quarter and took the final drunk got an A+, someone else studied every day for a week and got a C.

What makes any of you any different from anyone else on the planet? You deserve to get in? You were overqualified? You’re angry and bitter? So what? You can blame the system. The point system doesn’t give enough value to this or that. People with high stats got rejected because UCSD thinks they won’t matriculate. UCLA better see differently. You could even point fingers and say that I can only say these things because it’s never happened to me (it has). Or you could realize that it’s just life, and it’s going to keep happening.

I think it’s only natural to feel cheated in a way. But I agree it’s best to get on with life since it’s rarely fair, and dwelling on the past does little.

got into first choice Muir

waiting on ucla and berkeley(#1 choice)

so far ive gotten into all the ucs that i applied to, ucsd, ucsc, ucd, uci, ucsb…i hope berkeleys news is good:]
congrats to all

yes, life isnt fair, but isnt this why they have a points system? to be fair? and they certainly arent being fair. no one is entitled to anything for being a URM, impovrished, ill, etc.

if you are above the average, you should certainly get in. there is no reason to assume that you wont go to the college, especially when i know many people that have rejected LA and CAL for SD. it is not fair how we ‘over qualified’ applicants should have to appeal to get what we want when people from impovrished, single homes are taken our spots with lower stats.

so as you can see, even though UCSD makes it out to seem like their points system is cut and dry, it certainly isnt. im sure if you google the criticisms, you can find many articles on the many flaws of this points system. the only reason UCSD uses this points system is because they believe it is fair, when it is the farthest from fair. you cannot base someones achievements based on how many points you should give to them.
