Okay. Thanks.

If you get scholars are you guaranteed some merit aid?

honors and scholars aren’t tied to scholarships and that all that stuff will come in the mail. That’s why I read a little while ago.

Two years ago, the UMD folks told us at a presentation that they offered scholarships (in varying quantity and duration) to the top 25% of their applicant pool. Whether that has changed due to the economy, I’m not sure. S2 and DH went to the presentation this year and don’t remember what was said.

Countingdown, Was that the ATP program?

Son’s email says he’s admitted. (yea! ) But, when he clicks through to the “more info” page the server crashes.

Where would he find out about LEP or Honors? In the email or on the website?

Same here, DougBetsy. I thought my computer was just wonky today.

We have only receive the acceptance email, no official letter as of yet, but it’s snowing a blizzard here so it may not arrive until next week.

Yeah, poo on this snow. I live 10 miles north of I-70 and they said the most we’d get is a dusting. WRONG! I’ve got 4 inches. It was he** coming home from a track meet in Bethesda this afternoon.

Very good news from Maryland! I thought I read that if you are in the Honors College, you would have a chance to choose one of the specific programs in Feb or March. Does anyone know if that is how it works?

ACCEPTED

Daughter accepted into SCHOLARS College of Chemical and Life Sciences. I thought she would have gotten Honors with a 4.0 ACT 33. Not sure what to make of it. Is this a big deal. Do they really evaluate the students enough to ascertain that a student would thrive in Scholars vs. Honors ? Should I be happy ?

Hi Philly Dad, I think you should be happy as I have heard great things about the Scholars program. The truth is with so many applicants how can they really evaluate each one carefully? Is the Scholars program specific to Chemical and Life Sciences or was she independently accepted to both?

I DONT KNOW

In addition, you have been invited to College Park Scholars.

Please find your Academic Major and Residency Classification below.

Major: BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES
Advising College: COLLEGE OF CHEMICAL AND LIFE SCIENCES

My son was accepted but I am surprised he didn’t get honors or scholars - he has a 2260 SAT, 3.9 GPA, has taken 4 AP courses, 2 college courses, and another 4 AP courses his senior year. Does Out of State make a difference? Did others with similar stats get accepted/rejected into honors/scholars/gemstone? Thanks!

Reading the decisions thread will help you answer these questions.

jsmom. Being out of state must have hurt your son. I have a 1490/1600 and 4 APs and got into honors

Yes, I am a bit surprised his SAT’s are 1490/1600, 3.9 GPA - all honors/AP’s. Had 5 on AP Stat and Calc BC, 4 on APUSH, two A’s in college math courses at local university (since he ran out of math courses at his HS) 800 Math I/II, 680 History, Bio, Physics. Merit Scholar commended. Great extracurriculars. I am a bit disappointed…

How many of you are actually attending UMD? A lot of you have awesome stats and so I’m assuming UMD might not be your first choice.

@hugeblack: my stats are up there, I guess, but not awesome so dunno if your question was aimed at me or not, but it looks pretty probable that I’ll be at UMDCP. I still have 7 schools to hear back from, but UMD is probably third on my list and by far the most affordable of the top three–assuming I get into the other two.

jsmom, I think the adcoms might have screwed up. Call admissions and try to speak to your area adcom and express your surprise. It’s possible that the essay might have hurt your son or even a bad recommendation. Shy of those options, there may have been a failure of the system. UMCP is largely numbers driven but there are other factors that play a significant role. Your son, however, is a top student and certainly seems to have achieved distinction. It won’t hurt to call.

my neighbor got in january admit (next year)
