Decision: Accepted!

Date applied: October 7th
Date decision postmarked/received: postmarked March 19th, received the 22nd
Accepted at which school/major at UW: College of Arts & Sciences/ Pre-Humanities

Stats:

SAT Total: 1940: M 640, R 630, W 670 (9 essay)

ACT:

SAT Subject Tests:

GPA-UW/W: 3.7 UW

Rank: top 10%

AP/IB classes: Junior year: AP Language, Senior year: AP Literature, AP Calc AB, AP Psych

Subjective:

Essays: I really liked them, probably some of my best writing (if I do say so myself…). I wrote about my job (which I’ve had since Freshman year) & how it made me who I am/ what I’ll miss about it when I leave. For the cultural essay I wrote about my cousin & discrimination he’s faced (he’s Vietnamese) and how that has had an impact on me.

Teacher Recs: didn’t need them

Counselor Rec: didn’t need it

EC highlights: Honestly, not a lot. The majority of that was just my job, but I think the fact that I wrote my essay ABOUT my job showed how much it really meant to me.

Location/Person:

State or Country: New Jersey

School Type: Public

Ethnicity: White

Gender: Female

Other Factors, hook?: In the additional comments part I explained WHY I chose UW. They hadn’t asked that anywhere else, so I pretty much wrote a second short essay (it was maybe a paragraph shorter than my cultural essay…).

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to UW…?: waiting 5 months and 13 days (saw my changed status on the 20th) was DEFINITELY worth it… see you in the fall!

Decision: Accepted!

Accepted at which school/major at UW: College of Arts and Sciences/Pre-Science

Stats:

SAT - 1800, 640CR, 610M, 550W

Subjective:

Essays: I believe that I spent a LOT of time on them, and I was truly happy with the results because I believe that they really reflected what type of person I am.

Teacher Recs: none
Couselor Recs: none
EC Highlights: Orchestra (4 years), played at Carnegie Hall in NY, lots and lots of opportunities, Government volunteering at Democratic party in Nevada, Nevada Cancer Institute Summer Program, tutoring underprivileged kids at a middle school orchestral instruments, I think this section helped me a LOT.

Location/Person:
State or Country: Nevada
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Asian Indian
Gender: Male

Other Factors, hook?: I’m a first generation in the states, and I wrote about what types of hardships my family had to endure in order for me to get here. I think that really helped me out in the long run.

Decision: Accepted!!!

Date applied: January 13
Date decision postmarked/received: March 18 (Mailed first class… somehow it was postmarked the 18th and arrived on the 18th… which is odd because I live in Alaska…)
Accepted at which school/major at UW: College of Arts and Sciences, Pre-Arts

Stats:

SAT Total: 1610 M: 470, CR: 550, WR: 590, Essay: 8

ACT: didn’t take

SAT Subject Tests: didn’t take

GPA-UW/W: 3.93

Rank: 14/305

AP/IB classes: AP Language & Composition (3), AP US History (4), AP Literature & Composition

Subjective:

Essays: In my essays I really emphasized character. For the cultural essay I wrote about how in my small town I am discriminated against because I don’t have a religion, so I emphasized my personal situation and how reverse-discrimination has affected my character. For the other essay I wrote about the time I got lost in Japan, except I wrote in the third person rather than first. For the extra writings I talked about my activities and what aspects of my character they have helped shaped, for example I said conducting a small choir at my school shows my leadership skills, etc. I think my writing really gave them a good idea of who I am and what I could give and gain from attending UW.

Teacher Recs: didn’t need

Counselor Rec: didn’t need

EC highlights: I have a lot of music experience - conducting/running choir at my school, making All-State choir, and being in an Opera Ensemble at the college in Anchorage. I also mentioned being a member of Alaska Youth for Environmental Action, and Japanese National Honor Society, just to give a really well rounded view of the things I’ve done… but primarily my EC highlights are music music music XD

Location/Person:

State or Country: Alaska

School Type: Public

Ethnicity: White

Gender: Female

Other Factors, hook?: I’m from Wasilla, Alaska… I think that’s a hook whether I’d like it to be or not XD Also, four years of high school Japanese and my music accomplishments must have set me apart, because it seems my academic rigor and SATs aren’t nearly as competitive as some of yours! :P

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to UW…?: I’m definitely, definitely going! It’s such a beautiful, diverse campus! Pre-Arts major, so I’m headed in the Music/Music Education direction, as well as Italian and/or Latin. No scholarships at this point. I’m looking at McMahon Hall for dorms because of the Arts community and close proximity to campus. Advice for everyone… really write about something that emphasizes many aspects of your character, I think that’s possibly a large factor in my acceptance. Anyway, congratulations to everyone! See you this fall! :D

General Comments: YEE Huskies

It seems like there are so many OOS acceptances posted here…maybe it’s because there are more OOS using CC?

The likely reason for so many OOS acceptances is because of WA budget cuts- OOS students will bring in more money than in-staters.

bump for the people who didnt see this

Other Factors, hook?: the essays are probably what did it for me

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to UW…?: I was completely surprised to get in so don’t lose faith if your stats are low!!!

apple1080, my stats are way better than yours and I am waitlisted. Your advantage is that you are out of state. Congrats!!

^
wait ***?
i thought it was easier to get in if you’re in-state? maybe it’s the $ issue…

UW is starting to get hate from students and parents because they’re accepting more out of state students for the money.

Bingo’s comment was very rude none-the-less. Perhaps her essay was actually better than yours?

@ bingo its way easier for in state students to get into UW, last year the admission rate for out of student was 51% while in-state was 64%. So don’t ***** at out-of-state people for getting in, they probably wrote bomb essays or something. Also your 3.55 GPA is WAY under average, what did you honestly expect? Should have tried harder in high school.

^
lol mooper, truth.

3.55 isnt WAY under average?

I’m in the same boat with bingo1…

3.6 GPA, 2050 SAT, both parents are alums, in-state, minority, very good essay and pretty good EC’s…

Waitlisted. What gives?

^
yeah that does sound funky
although legacy doesnt count. how many AP/IB?

GPA-UW/W: 3.823 hs 3.703 college runningstart

Rank: 38/342

AP/IB classes: X

Subjective:

Essays: personal statement- on my pageant experience and how i faced discrimination because of my ethnicity and my desire to empower women of color. diversity essay- pretty good. talked about learning from senior citizens/old people

Teacher Recs: NONE

Counselor Rec: NONE

EC highlights: started a campus ministry at my hs. working since the age of 15 and how ive learned to network. and being a camp counselor and lifeguard

Location/Person:

State or Country: WA

School Type: public

Ethnicity: Asian and Pacific Islander

Gender: Female

Other Factors, hook?: first generation american, first generation in family to go to the college, very good essays, and probably rigorous courses from runningstart??

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to UW…?:
if i get enough financial aid, NYU or Pepperdine is my first choice though

ilikeUW-

I have 2 AP’s and an additional 3 honors.

that’s not many, but I gotta say, UW was my safety… and it kind of screwed me over.

According to what the UW told me, the average freshman GPA is 3.7-3.9. So a GPA of 3.55 is below average- just not way below. For transfer students the essay portion of the application has almost as much weight as one’s GPA. To be fair though- I’m not sure this is true of freshman applicants. Regardless, it is out of line to argue that it is unfair that you didn’t get in and she did. The odds are against OOS students. She probably had a good essay and good EC. Another thing to keep in mind is that students who take easy classes and get good grades and less likely to be accepted than students who take challenging classes and get slightly worse grades.

And just my two cents- ethnicity shouldn’t play a part in getting accepted to college. That it does makes me horribly angry.

^ I agree. Neither ethnicity nor gender.
