i applied undergrad to the VPA and heard back quite a long time ago. i’m actually fairly shocked that some of you still haven’t heard. i would be really, really surprised if you didn’t hear in the next week or so. have you been checking your MySlice accounts?

My D has been accepted to Whitman. Do you know how their Learning Community is or should she not request it?

Also she may be interested in the Marching Band. We understand that Band Camp begins one week prior to when classes start, is there extra housing/meal fees involved if she decides to join?

viciousdirt, speaking for our family only, of course, I can assure you that we’ve been maniacally checking myslice and email several times a day. Nada. My S applied to 10 colleges and SU has demonstrated one the worst decision processes of all.

ahhh i know how stressful this can be. i suppose i was in the first batch at syracuse, but i was about 3 weeks late at American, and I can assure you that everything about that school’s admissions process is much worse than at Syracuse. they actually value interest above everything (yes, everything), so i was waitlisted (then accepted at syracuse and boston university??) and some kids with 2.5 GPAs, bad essays, and 1600 SATs were accepted. in fact, a few students with similar stats to me were given half tuition scholarships. oh, but those kids visited campus, so that made them far more qualified. then they offered half of the kids who would have been waitlisted a “prestigious” spot as a spring acceptee with absolutely no financial aid and essentially a rejected students camp for the first semester of freshman year during which they are segregated onto their own campus and required to take remedial courses.

sorry for the rant, though. i can certainly sympathize with those of you who are still waiting after my experience with AU. colleges should really just wait to notify everyone at teh same time. good luck! :)

I don’t understand not hearing from Syracuse. If it’s no, then just advise us.

Also peeved by the wait…

Checking MySlice twice a day and still nothing…

thanks for the info… can’t believe Syracuse does this but I guess it’s more $$ for them

I really don’t mind when colleges send out decisions in waves; it’s understandable, but I really dont get how they can notify applicants LATER then APRIL 1st. Granted my guidance counselor did not send my first marking period grades in until March 1st, so that’s most likely why I have not gotten my decision. I’m going to call tomorrow though and say “I was under the impression that all applicants would be notifyed by April 1st of their admissions decision, I was just wondering why I have not yet gotten mine?” We now have less than a month to make a decision, and we have not heard back from all our schools.

Wow, I heard back weeks ago. Maybe call admissions?

we’re shocked by the wait. my daughter’s app was submitted early november.

I called the admissions department today, and they informed me that they would be “making decisions when they make decisions” and that I should definitely know in the “next week or two.” I asked if decisions always come out at 5 on Fridays, and she said no, “whenever.”

Then I said, not to be presumptuous, but the ONLY DAY I can go to accepted students day is this Friday. I asked if I would be allowed to go even though I wasn’t accepted, and she said “No.”

I have to ask off for work 3 weeks in advance, and I asked off for this Friday just in case. But now if I am accepted, I’ll have to rearrange my life (as will my mom) simply because they don’t have their decisions out yet.

I am shocked and confused. Syracuse was my number one, but now I am actually feeling a sliver of doubt. It is not right to tell people that they will know by the end of March, and then turn around and do this. It is appalling.

Good luck to others, I hope we learn soon!

Wow, I think this is really outrageous. My D was waitlisted along with many others just last week (and she had already shifted her focus elsewhere, so it’s all good for her). My fear for those of you who haven’t heard is that a few of you really, really want to go to Syracuse, and a rejection so late is just horrible, allowing such a short time frame for decision-making.

I don’t get it at all, and I think it just stinks for you guys.

I just called admissions (15 min. on hold!) and was told the same thing as above, that we would know within the next few weeks. She blamed the fact that they received 11% more applications than last year and said they were going as fast as they could still reviewing applicants. My app. has been “complete” for months…what is the hold-up??? Other kids heard weeks ago, and it seems that the waitlist people recently heard…are we the great unwashed rejects? Will we all be denied admission all at once? Are we the leftovers? I sure don’t anticipate any warm and fuzzies coming my way after a delay like this…

This stinks! I think you all have the right to be upset! I just read that some of the kids glitched at Delaware have already heard off the waitlist. So that means that technically, other schools are admitting from the waitlist and Syracuse “should be done in the next couple of weeks” What are you all doing about first-come-first serve dorm selections and stuff? My only advice is to try to remain cordial to anyone you speak to at Cuse if you are really interested and not to tick anyone off. Also, maybe a quick email to admissions reaffirming your interest? Maybe if they’re sorting through the borderline kids it would give you an edge? My son’s school Naviance shows 42 kids applied this year…12 accepted. (2 early) That seems way low. I don’t know if SU reports their decisions directly to guidance (some schools do) or is they are self-reported and kids haven’t informed their counselors? Or maybe, they really ARE super behind?

One thing to add; Syracuse does not do housing or course selections based on deposits or anything else; the ED acceptances don’t even get priority on housing and registration…

that being said, this is unacceptable…especially when accepted student days start this week…

how does Syracuse expect to become more of a school for kids from all over the country if they can’t even make advance plans to attend the accepted student days?? Is a kid from Wisconsin going to fly in on short notice???

I spoke to someone about an hour ago and lucky for me they were very nice and patient. I really don’t think I could have keept my cool if they were rude to me. The lady said that we should be hearing back with in the next week or two. Since i applied to newhouse she went on to tell me that 4,600 students applied for 330 spots. (way to boost my confidence!!) and that newhouse had the most applicants. She then went on to tell me that I had everything in. I then asked if there was anyway she could tell me if a decision had been made and she said “I dont have the authority to see that and it is against school policy to give admissions decisions over the phone”… really 'cuse? I mean if i didnt get in I really would like to know, cause other schools that I have been accepted to do housing by when you respond.

Rodney: wise sage and great guru (I can’t hide my affection
) That is VERY good news about Syracuse housing. But even if they gave priority to the ED kids, it wouldn’t be as much of an issue as it would for a school with rolling or large EA program. So, while these kids are waiting to hear from 'Cuse, they are falling further and further down the housing preference lists for many of their other school options. We heard from SU early in our home, but it was an anxious wait because some of the more popular dorms at my son’s otherwise “top choice” school were filled and filling but fast! SOme of the least popular dorms there are located miles from campus and require shuttles to and from class… and the student dissatisfaction and attrition were much higher in the Siberian dorms. So it’s GREAT news (and very cool) that SU doesn’t give a leg up to the kids that hear earlier…many other schools aren’t as fair. Let’s just hope it’s good news across the board…the CC board that is!

Jets, I am glad that they were nice to you. The Newhouse numbers seem very bad but remember that not everyone accepted attends. The number of accepted students might be double that or more (okay still bad numbers but not a bleak as the picture painted for you). I am reading the various posts and I can not remotely understand that Syracuse would not send the notices out by this Friday. “This week or next” ??? That is inconceivable and honestly unacceptable. I want to be clear that I do not mean to rile anyone up. The poor person answering the phone at the admission dept is not responsible for the late response. It is a larger problem.

Newhouse seems to be a great school and if my D gets in, fine. I just can not understand how Syracuse allowed this process to go so poorly. Could the school not at least send communications to the students who are waiting?

I agree with all of you! It gives you a message like “our time is more valuable than yours, if you don’t like it then leave” when in truth we were the most interested in attending. I feel let down, can’t help i.
