Even though D was accepted, she took it off her list after our last visit. We went to a specific invite-only, major-specific event and most families had to travel long distances and incur an overnight hotel stay. The event lasted less than a half hour and the people running the event were clearly not prepared, they were unhappy, and overwhelmed. There was very little humility on their part, the attitude was more like - we are highly ranked and you will be lucky to get in. Most of the kids/families left with eyebrows raised and lots of rumbling…I frankly don’t get it.

If this was the first visit, I would have recommeded that we come back, maybe the staff was having an off day. But this was our second encounter and once again we were underwhelmed compared to their competition (which they don’t perceive as their competition). I hear such wonderful things about the school and just kept thinking that maybe our experiences were more along the lines of “just not a great fit”

This lack of respect from admissions is shocking but I am begining to think the attitudes are endemic of the culture. Maybe there have been cuts and the staff is just overworked. Just as a side note, during our first visit we were shown a dorm during a tour that in my opinion was disgusting. Filthy and not just by the kids. It was clear that it had not been maintained. This was not a major factor because you can suck anything up for a year but it was always in the back of our minds for the steep price tag. Once again, indicative of budget cuts.

Hey guys, I received my acceptance on 31/3 after chasing them for 2 weeks over the phone and email. I suggest you guys do the same, as they are probably waiting to filter out those who lose interest (can’t be bothered think whether to accept or reject, maybe?)

So according to what you said, you began calling Syracuse 2 weeks before March 31? Do people really think calling the admiss. office will really make a difference? I paid my application fee like everyone else, and I got my stuff in to them on time…I really resent having to aggressively pursue them JUST to get a decision. I’ve proven my interest, it should be clear from my essays, this is not the way Syracuse should be handling things. Maybe if I had received some communication from them directly, saying that due to increased number of applications…etc. but nothing. it seems so very disrespectful…and they say “kids” nowadays show no respect…same could be said for Syracuse’s admissions dept. sorry for the rant. I’m actually leaning towards BU right now, they’ve shown me the love, and THEY seem to want me (great fin. aid pkg). So, without knowing whether or not I’m in…I say, it will be Syracuse’s loss, cuz I’m an awesome kid :-D!!! ha ha! nuff said!

@navna, your advice is without any rational basis. Admission offices do not work like that. If they want you, they will accept you without “chasing them”

It’s a shame what I’m reading. To have to wait until mid-April for a decision is awful. With that said, I think only the undergraduate admissions is having this problem. I’m a graduate applicant and everything has gone relatively smoothly for me, from hearing back from them and my communication with their Admissions and Financial Aid departments. I’ll most likely be at Newhouse this summer.

Budget cuts sound possible. The attitude at the meeting, according to momofboston, is unacceptable. No college should treat their prospective students in such a manner. I sincerely hope it was an outlier or just a couple of bad apples within Syracuse’s faculty.

Best of luck to you allmy feeling is that the school will eventually post some sort of explanation.

11% increase in applications, budget cuts, other factors = this epic thread

I got accepted and even though I cannot afford my EFC (23K), Syracuse gave me the worst financial aid package ever. They expect me to pay $37K on PLUS loans!

@vlorio
Yeah I’m so upset by my financial aid package. My EFC was less than 5k I think and right now it seems I will have to take out about 25k worth of Federal plus loans. SU is my first choice school and frankly the only school I really want to go to that I was accepted to. I have no idea how I am going to come up with this money. I have a job and so I’m saving up but there’s no way I can make it past 20k. So it seems I’m going to be taking 20k of loans for my freshman year. Fun.
I tried to appeal but they said there was nothing they could do.

This is syracuse ny , what do you expect from such a hick town ?? I went on a school tour and thank god that I did , I could never imagine living in such a place . The people in the town are over weight , polyester wearing , hicks . It makes NJ look like nyc !!! Good luck to everyone !! Bad form syracuse !!

pixi: Why put yourself in that kind of debt? You need to look beyond freshman year and imagine yourself taking out that kind of debt each and every year for the next four years.
You should seriously consider the bottom line costs at each of the colleges that offered you an acceptance before committing to your most expensive option.

Decision: waitlisted from 3rd choice option: management. They said that even though i submitted it before the deadline, i submitted my app too late to be accepted. what a turn off…waiting until March 31st for that? i’m happy to be going elsewhere

Not to mention HORRIBLE FA packages [at least from what I’ve been reading]. The good thing about not getting in is that I don’t have to worry about how in the world I’m going to cough up 40k+

I can’t quite believe it, but the Syracuse admissions page states that they are still accepting applications for Fall 2011! They’re asking for MORE applications when they can’t even handle the applications they currently have. I still have not heard, and my application was submitted on time (and was supposedly “complete” for months). The school’s excuse is that they’ve received 11% more applications this year and yet they’re looking for more??? What’s up with that? Couldn’t they simply hire more admissions people? maybe skip the printing of one of their glossy brochures and use the $$$$ for staff?

wow, I am wowed!
How can they be allowing more apps, when they are so many people (myself included) on waitlist? Aren’t we good enough for Syracuse’s spots?

I reckon the answer is in this thread. Syracuse is a VERY expensive school and not known for it’s great financial aid. This year fiscal concerns seem to be making the problem worse. My guess is since the application selection has to be “need blind” the must have gotten some quick “no thanks” on their offers (in most cases the last to come) and might have panicked? Even with a “need blind” policy you can kinda look for certain zip codes, HS names…application activity “tells.” Makes you wonder?

Makes sense, but why not just let everybody in, give the fin. pkgs they can, and whoever can pay, pays? Could they really be spending all this time carefully cherry-picking applicants? They have a waitlist they can go to, and they haven’t even let some of us know whether or not we’ve been accepted! Are they protecting their numbers (stats) to show how exclusive and exceptional they are? Maybe it’s because of my own personal situation, but Syracuse has really damaged their reputaion in my eyes.

I have heard before that some of the last decisions when they basically run out of aid money that they will give out, the decisions are made based on the applicants ability to pay full or close to that. But I’m not sure how true that is.

I hate to be complaining yet again (still haven’t received my decision, 'Cuse!) but I find this process to be unethical, in a way. I don’t know if it’s right to reject, accept, or WAITLIST people when you haven’t even reviewed some of the applications. It ain’t fair, it ain’t right.
