Decode this dress code please

We are going to a private grand opening of a new casino. Dress code is Evening Chic. Does anyone have any ideas about what this would be? Semi-formal, black tie optional, or what?

H is planning on wearing a black suit and I plan on wearing black, flowing pants and a very dressy/party top.

I think you are accurate with what you plan to wear. I would nterpret it as cocktail party wear.

I agree, I think cocktail party should cover it. They’d like people to dress up, but they won’t ban you if you aren’t wearing a tux.

That you’ll probably see everything from dressy shirts and slacks, to sports jackets to a suit with or without a tie. It’s not black tie, so a tuxedo wouldn’t be appropriate, IMO. Your outfits sound fine.

Thanks for your responses…very helpful.

My casino fashion tips come from 007 movies.
:o

That’s what I was afraid of - being underdressed. Since this is an “opening night”, I was thinking people will be dressed a little more elegantly - just like you see in the Bond films. I’ve never heard of evening chic as a dress code and I don’t want to be underdressed. I thought of wearing the typical “little black dress” but, don’t want to be stuck standing in high heels for hours. I think this will be more of a meet and greet than your typical trip to the casino. I thought that I could get away with dressy sandals if I wore the pants.

“Evening chic” says to me that they would like guests to dress up, certainly, but also with a certain amount of panache and style. They may be taking photos to promote the opening, so they want a good looking crowd. Your outfit sounds appropriate, but it really depends how elegant it looks - is it plain and boring, or does it have that “wow” factor? They are most definitely looking for a certain amount of “wow” from the guests. If you think that you may need a bit “more,” can you accessorize with bold jewelry? Also, something simple such wearing a jeweled or metallic sandal may be enough. If you can post a link to a similar top (from an on-line retailer), I can try to be more specific. It sounds like a great event - have fun!

I suppose you are right and that some people ( or who knows in your area, maybe more than some)might show up in formalwear, but that’s not what the invitation says. If they intended it to be black tie optional, the invitation should have said so.

watch Oceans 11 for tips! I would wear something that sparkles.

If it’s a casino, you can wear anything you bleeping well please, since their goal is to take your money. And my guess is also that “a private opening” just means they have a mailing list of people who have been known to gamble.

(I don’t trust casinos. They are engineered to make it easier to separate you from your money.)

Evening chic at a casino?

Just imagine what Kim Kardashian would wear if she wasn’t so “classy”. ;)

I have been to a couple of casinos in Michigan (ie not vegas), and when there isn’t a special event going on it’s VERY casual-- I was expecting 007 and was disappointed by all the sweatpants and jeans. lol. Based on that experience, I would THINK that evening chic is dressy and fun but not black tie sort of stuff-- I think they’d have said so if that was what they wanted, I don’t think they assume that a party at a casino must mean formalwear. I agree with Gourmetmom’s read on the situation and second her suggestions. Have fun, this event sounds like a blast!

You could always call to clarify if you’re really worried about being underdressed… I’ve had to do that before, and I am glad I did because I nearly showed up wildly overdressed. In that case it was a much more casual event at a normally extremely formal venue.

I’d say not the little black dress and pearls, but something a little flashier in the cocktail party line. Or at least some glitzy shoes/accessories.

Guys always have it so easy. A nice black suit and a man is good to go for such a variety of occasions. If he feels to dressed up he can just take off his tie. I go to a lot of events and you just never know sometimes what people will be wearing.

For example, a boxing match is something that i have seen people looking all dressed up for as well as people that are in jeans and tennis shoes. Actually it is usually the people that are closest to the stage that are the dressiest.

It is nice that you at least got an idea on the invite about how to dress. I think that I would go for something that had some sparkle. You can’t go wrong with a classic look, such as a basic black dress or a velvet dress. It always gets a boost from a sparkly pin. Your outfit with the flow-y pants and the fancy top sounds like it will be perfect. It also sounds pretty comfortable which in my book is a nice way to head out any evening. When you can get a nice look along with a nice feel it is a good combo.

I noticed that the OP is from Maryland, so I adjusted by advice a bit - east coast events tend to be dressier than other areas of the country.

Great ideas and advice from everyone. I think this will be a much dressier event than simply going to a casino in, say, Atlantic City for the day. I believe this will be one of those photo shoot events. The casino doesn’t open to the public until 10pm, they will probably be dressed casually.

The only reason I thought evening chic might be black-tie optional is that when I did a search on google, I found a post where someone wrote that evening chic was a hipper way of saying black-tie optional. That’s what got me worrying.

Gourmetmom> The top I was thinking of wearing in like one of the holiday separates from Macy’s that they usually pair with a long black skirt or the type of pants I plan on wearing. It is a shiny, silvery pale teal corset top with a matching short jacket. I am having trouble finding something flashier, like a sparkly dressy halter top ( which was my original idea).

What do you think of this top? It’s on sale…could look very chic with the pants and a metallic gold high heeled sandal.
