Deep Springs Discussion Thread for Applicants in Summer 2024 to be Accepted in Summer 2025

The application was opened yesterday and I noticed there wasn’t a thread for this application cycle like there usually is. Looks like @dracollavenore got accepted so the torch must be passed

Looks like they’re continuing to answer questions in their Reddit AMA from last year so this is still a useful resource: Reddit AMA

For those who happened upon this thread and want to learn more about the school, here are some basic resources to get started:

Do you guys know the average age of students at the school?

From deepsprings.edu: “We do not consider applicants who have already completed a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent at another institution, or are over the age of 23 at the application deadline.”

So considering most applicants are likely seniors in high school, I would assume around 18-20ish

One week until first round applications are due! This thread has been more dead than recent years but I hope once we all get our applications in we can start having more discussions

Anyone applying/applied to other Nunnian schools and programs?
I’m applying to Outer Coast as an undergrad.

Me too
I am probably not getting into DS, at least not this year. I do intend to show my face at least. I know the eligibility is until 23 or bachelors, but does anyone know if they have a history of actually admitting older students/returning applicants? I’m assuming @dracollavenore got accepted after a few tries
Outer Coast is uniquely interesting to me for a few reasons. I’d say apply if the specific focus/values of OC in particular appeal to you

Also, does anyone know how appealing to other schools ED interacts with the 2 years? Would you be able to go to OC/DS for 2 years then go to the ED?

I don’t think anyone can confidently say they are getting into DS, especially before Round 2 is released.

Outer Coast definitely appeals to me, but the relatively populous location combined with other factors makes me prefer DS. I think the values of self-governance and dedication to labor are enhanced by complete independence.

No clue as to the answer to your second post.

They definitely have a history of admitting returning applicants who were denied in past cycles, though i haven’t seen anyone past the age of eligibility being admitted.

What does ED refer to in this context?

Early decision

Is your question referring to you applying to a school ED and applying to Deep Springs? As far as I am aware, if you do that and get into your ED school you must withdraw your application from Deep Springs and attend the school you got accepted to.

Otherwise, if you get rejected from your ED school you go through the application process as normal.

From the application form:
Are you applying Early Decision (or any other binding agreements) to other colleges?
This information will not be considered in how we judge your application. You are welcome to apply early decision to another college as long as the notification date is on or before December 21. However, because we wish to maximize our second round pool, you must inform us of withdrawals from the Deep Springs application process before December 22 – if you answer yes to this question, your email will be collected to remind you to notify the Applications Committee about possible withdrawals.

To anyone who’s still working, you’ve put in a lot of work and should be proud. Good luck!

As I interpreted it, abcedminded is asking about what happens if you back out of your ED agreement due to financial or other reasons. Will they still take you as a transfer or would the ED school be ‘mad’?

I’m not sure, though I would assume that is up to the office of admission’s discretion. From what I’ve heard, unless in situations where there are severe extenuating circumstances, there can be consequences and it isn’t looked upon favorably to back out of an ED agreement.

Just submitted, very nervewracking for sure. Does anybody have any idea how large this applicant pool is supposed to be? Apparently they received a huge spike last year, close to 800, which is a terrifying number.

Congratulations! I just submitted as well. I assume the applicant pool this cycle would be less than last year, since activity on forums regarding Deep Springs has dropped.

Where did find that information? I know there was a spike a couple years ago following the 60 minutes segment but I wasn’t able to find any numbers regarding last cycle.
