Defer my acceptance at UTAustin?

Hi, I got accepted into UT Austin as a freshman undergraduate for the 2016-2017 school year. But I am from out of state, and it is really expensive for me, especially since I didn’t receive any financial aid from them. But UT has always been my dream school and I love it so much! So here’s my questions

  1. Would it be possible to go to a cheaper school in my state for two years, then complete my undergraduate education at UT?
  2. Would they allow me to defer my admission until my junior year in college?
  3. Or would I have to reapply as a transfer?
  4. How hard is it to get in as a transfer? Harder or easier than as a freshman?
  5. Is it possible they will re-accept me as a transfer if I declined their offer the first time as an admitted freshman?

Thank you in advance!

UT Austin doesn’t give good merit aid or financial aid even to the residents of Texas who have paid into the tax system for years.

Where else were you accepted?

Yea I read about that too  I was hoping to try harder in my first two years and aim for some scholarships. I just got off the waitlist at UC Davis and they gave me an amazing financial aid/ scholarship deal. Are you from Texas? @carachel2 I love it there!! Do you think it’d be possible UT would let me defer my acceptance until my junior year?

Go to UC Davis

What major do you want to study?

@ClarinetDad16 is it a better school? Which one is ranked higher?

@CollegeWizard16 nutrition/food sciences. Do you know which program is better?

What is the difference in cost?

@ClarinetDad16 UT would be 37,000 more haha, but that’s just freshman year

That’s a 150,000 reasons for UC Davis

I am a UCD grad currently living in Texas. UCD is an excellent university that has a strong food science/nutrition program. While UT is an awesome school, I would not pay the out-of-state tuition if I had what UCD is offering. You can always look into UT for grad school.

@JazzyTXMom nice! If you don’t mind me asking, What did you major in? Are you from California originally?

I have a BS in Psychology. I grew up in SoCal, went to UCD, returned to SoCal for almost 20 years before moving to TX 10 years ago. Yes, TX is a great place to be but so is Davis. It is a wonderful college town that is close to the Bay area and Tahoe. I have many wonderful memories of my time at UCD.

@JazzyTXMom Davis is really nice! I like the suburban, earthy feel. But I’ve lived until the Bay Area my entire life and I want to go out and see different things! Thank you for replying! What part of Texas are you from? And How is it different from Davis?

We are talking many moons ago, but what I liked best about Davis is that it was a college town that was free from distractions allowing me to focus on school. However, the Bay area was there should you want a taste of city life. I am in San Antonio but can say that Austin reminds me a lot of Berkeley.

@JazzyTXMom was it hard finding a job after graduating? Or did you go to grad school?

And this is totally unrelated, but what’s San Antonio like?? I have always thought about living there, it sounds perfect, with both city and rural aspects to it

I went to grad school at UCLA. San Antonio is great place to raise a family. You are in a city but can be in nature–rivers, lakes, campgrounds in minutes. There are also many parks and natural areas within the city.

It is really pretty in San Antonio!

Well I’m still waiting on the wait list for Irvine
