Deferred from Clemson and or University of South Carolina 2024

UPDATE to my question above: You can request a change of major and it will not mess up your acceptance as long as it is not a closed major. - I emailed and they emailed me right back

Business is not a closed major. That is not to say that it is not a competitive major. In fact business and engineering both seem to be two of the most competitive since you have to begin with pre-business in order to get into the actual business school.

That being said I think that business is not closed only because they may have an abundance of teachers and classes and buidlings ect for this major where as the closed majors may have less professors ect. - This part is just my thought process

Yes agree but competitive and closed majors are two totally different things at Clemson. My understanding is that Clemson’s business major is always competitive, but it’s not a closed major…

correct!

Exactly!

It is not on the list of competitive majors, therefore it is not a competitive major.

Same with us and our daughter, which was based on recommendations from friends of ours whose kids are / went there. Got in Summer Start . TO . We did the standard tour in March 2023 , loved it, and then made a separate visit in late June 2023 solely for the purposes of meeting with her assigned admissions counselor. We are OOS/ East Coast . She asked questions and had the opportunity to further communicate her level of interest. She kept in touch with admissions counselor throughout the process , and really do think it may have helped . Certainly didn’t hurt. It’s a very grueling process no doubt .

I called admissions this morning to ask about the summer start because we will be in Cabo that first week for my D graduation trip and the dates of the trip cannot be changed.

She stated they MUST go to class due to the short term and it’s either your child does the summer start or they can’t do Clemson……

Pretty blunt about it!

She did offer another option was the Global start but we are not paying for 2 international trips back to back and that one starts the day after we get back but the students have to be on campus the week prior and we will be gone.

Not sure why they would start classes during a holiday week. Seems dumb on their part.

And where is this list published by Clemson?

Someone posted the list way above from a tour/admission session they attended. They saw it during the slideshow presentation.

Here it is

I think it’s time to put the topic to rest and move on ?

I agree, particularly when it’s second hand info and there is absolutely no published data from Clemson to support this. Other people have heard differently on Clemson tours and there’s obvious confusion here about closed v. competitive majors. Truth is no one here knows!

Business is a competitive major at college, very popular and harder to get into do to a lot of competition. Some majors aren’t as popular, but colleges only have enough room for a smaller number of students. Competitive and popular can be used interchangeably, but some are closed majors, with a finite number or spots. What Are The Most Popular Majors Among Prospective College Students?

Agreed … it’s futile at this juncture . Wishing all the accepted students and parents the best .

I don’t know how much demonstrated interest matters, fyi for all reading. My daughter could NOT have shown more interest and was waitlisted with stats around or above some I’ve seen got in. Below others. I think major plays a huge role! Just personal opinion.

And I showed no interest and got in. It means very, very little if anything at all.

My daughter did not upload any additional information after being deferred, and she never called or emailed admissions indicating any further interest. She felt like she had submitted everything that was needed prior to early action. Clemson was by far her top choice, and she was accepted yesterday!

Clemson is a highly sought after school so in theory to get into any major program is “competitive”. However, like stated before it’s not a closed major but it’s still competitive regardless.

A competitive major is when it is more challenging to get in that the average major at the school. An example is at the Univeristy of Washington. Computer Science is much harder to get in, so it is a competitive major. Just because a school is competitive does not mean a major is competitive.
