Re read the posts and take from it what you want. No one is saying they ARE doing it , I am saying WE approached it as why not try one more thing as it can’t hurt . I’m a parent and you are a student so there will be lots to learn over time as far as how things are done in life and what works best for you. Good luck to you wherever you land !
I understand that thinking. Some of the info in CDSs should be viewed as guidelines, rather than hard and fast rules. More importantly, CDSs are completed by institutional reporting, not admissions. So, there can be inconsistencies, and even mistakes.
I think with such large quantities - one doesn’t even know who is reading the app.
I like to go by the CDS but it is true, people are people. And for some, it’s hard to clear the mind completely so it could be the not considered box is off. We’ll never know.
My daughter interviewed for a full scholarship at her school - but didn’t get it. Was chosen an alternate.
When we sent her for a final visit, she stopped in to see the Honors Dean and the advisor for this special program to say hello.
A few days later her alternate status was bumped up to she won.
I happened to be talking to a mom on here whose daughter gave up the scholarship for a full ride at SMU - so it could simply be that my daughter was next in line.
Or did popping in to two influential people change her status?
We’ll never know.
In the end, if one has a belief that it helped - whether it did or didn’t, doesn’t much matter. What matters is - did they get the result or not - that they wanted.
If they did - and the why will never be known - but each is entitled to certainly think differently. In the end, the positive decision is the most important thing.
Yes, summer start is just a money grab for OOS students. Ridiculous.
Interesting! My daughter was deferred and then denied yesterday. Her school does not rank. It’s crazy to me - she has all the bells and whistles and still denied. It’s crazy!
It’s occupancy. Just like Bridge - you don’t go to school here but you pay us rent.
It’s additional revenue.
It’s business - which exactly what colleges are - businesses.
Some have done a great job building their brands.
Yes it is
No it is not. These are the competitive majors:
Architecture
Communication
Construction Science and Management
Health Science (all concentrations)
Landscape Architecture
Language and International Health (can select, departmental approval needed)
Nursing
Performing Arts (can select, departmental approval needed)
Sports Communication
Just because it’s available on the change of major form doesn’t mean it’s not competitive, big dawg
Regardless, business is not on the list. This has been confirmed several times above.
Exactly my point I think the schools that do not rank may actually be hurting some students. Not all obviously, but I think that is one of the biggest factors.
Daughter intially applied with Education as her major. That was in August before she had begun taking dual enrollment teaching courses and she started her job teaching both dance and cheer at her childhood dance studio. She is now thinking that teaching is not what she is wanting to do. She is considering switching to business. How bad will it mess things up if we submit to change her major? Is that something they would just approve or deny the change and if they deny we just continue on or what happens? Has anyone else done this?
Business is not competitive, so she should be fine. But do it as early as possible. If business if full for another reason, they she can go back to education or choose another similar major.
this is why we clicked “NO” on the summer start option. He knew he didn’t want to do that. He was waitlisted yesterday and his response was “good riddance”. LOL. It was never his top choice though.
Has the school made an official statement to this effect? Or are you reading tea leaves based on what anecdotal evidence people have posted from various tour guides? If there’s a statement from Clemson itself that Business is not competitive, I’d love to see it. I
This doesn’t seem to jive in any way with the fact that Clemson is a school with a huge application increase and Business is the second largest college within the university.
I think it’s semantics. I have a child at the school in the school of business and it’s the most popular, maybe that’s the word The other majors are closed and more “competitive” so to speak.
The word is that business is not “closed.”
The competitive closed majors are such because they are limited and can take fewer students than other majors. Four of my kids were business majors, two started as accounting majors because it’s the most competitive. Business is a major that can be hard to transfer into because it’s popular.
Thank you for the input. If thats the case and it has nothing to do with your credentials or college readiness, it should be up to the kid/ family to see if they want to get two Gen Eds out of the way. It should not be because the school doesn’t have enough spaces available in the Fall. You are mandating the deraling of a kids summer as well as another 13K in tuition/ fees because the school couldn’t plan appropriately.
I also doubt its the luck of the draw to see if you get Summer Start- there must be some criteria by which kids are selected. To that regard, I would be interested to know how many of the Summer Start kids are OOS- would be quite telling as to the revenue angle.
Since they take more in state than OOS there are probably in state students with lower stats who get summer start. Room and board is the same for both.
