Deferred from UW Madison EA 2024

My daughter was deferred for Fall 2020.

As with everyone, we want to do all we can, but not overdo. (Maybe overdoing a but is okay???)

  1. Planned step - My daughter will reach out to Regional rep sharing that she will be (1) writing letter of continued interest (2) this is her #1 choice and (3) some recent activity.
  2. Has your HS admission reps been in touch with the Regional UW rep. Ours keeps saying he is trying, with no luck.
  3. Is it too much to send email to André E. Phillips, the actual Director of Admissions and Recruitment?
  4. Should she also call/email the main admissions department that the letter came from?
  5. Does anyone know statistics of how many accepted from deferred?
  6. Has anyone seen a really good basic letter of interest letter?

Again, want to do all we can, without being inappropriate.

Thank you!

I would not bother admissions people with letters. The applicant just got put into the pool with the rest of the applicants who will meet the application deadline. It means the application was strong enough for consideration but not strong enough to supplant potentially better candidates. Flooding the already busy admissions personnel with letters of interest won’t make the credentials any better than for those who don’t. Imagine if everyone routinely sent the extra means nothing letter.

My son’s school guidance counselor told us that Wisconsin got 7% more EA applications, which was a very large jump for them. This, of course, made competition very high.

Oh I’m not sure I wouldn’t send a letter. And I mean a single letter to admissions. If Madison is truly your first choice and you will attend if accepted. I’d reference your student ID in your letter. I’d highlight updates and express your strong interest in UW. I do know a couple people who were accepted after deferral and did jump through this hoop after their EA deferral. At a minimum, I don’t think it would hurt to send in a single letter.

I also heard EA apps were VERY high this year. It will be interesting to see if that carries over to RD or if those numbers will be down? Good luck to all and On, Wisconsin.

Our son (NY) was deferred for CS, and UW is his top choice. He was born in WI, and we are also likely to move (back) to Wisconsin this summer. Is there a way to find out who our regional admissions officer is? Thank you.

Our school guidance counselor knew who ours was. I was surprised that it was not the same person who had visited the high school.

I was deferred on Friday OOS for Business.

33 ACT, 3.96 W GPA, good ECS (my most impressive one is DECA, which I’ve done for 3 years, competed at state and nationals, and been Director of Recruitment and now President).
Looking back on my Why Madison essay, it was short and could’ve been more detailed, but I’m very confident in my Common App essay and LORs.

I wrote a LOCI and sent it in yesterday, where I mentioned my updated GPA (4.0 W) and class rank, and my straight A’s from last semester. I also mentioned updates to my extracurriculars, like my work as DECA President, qualifying for DECA state again, and working on my community awareness written event. I made it clear that Madison and the business school is my number one choice, and if I am accepted, I will definitely attend. I also added a little more about why I love the school and my experience from visiting campus. I plan on self-reporting my mid-year grades when I receive instructions to do so.

Does anyone have any insight into my chances at being accepted after a deferral, or anything I could do to boost my chances? Thanks

You only report weighted gpa’s. Wonder how low your unweighted gpa is- that could be a reason for being put in the pool with the rest of the applicants (who still can apply, btw).

Unweighted GPA was a 3.8 when I applied, with my mid-year grades it was boosted to a 3.886.

btw, when you say deferred I assume you mean deferred for UW as a whole. This means you are now in the pool of the rest of the applicants- some still getting around to applying to UW. It is a balancing act for Admissions to decide how many to give an early acceptance to. They need to be sure they have space for the rest of those who apply. This year they received many more EA applicants as I understand it. Someone else pointed out that they don’t know if that means there will be fewer who applied later or if the number of applicants has soared with using the Common Application.

OP- your stats look good (but then so do those of many others). All you can do is wait and see.

If anyone has committed to another school/knows they are not going to Wisconsin, it would be much appreciated if you decline your deferred spot. This gives the opportunity for others in the regular decision round who are dying to come here a chance to be admitted in March. Thank you!

Finally sent in LOCI, hope it’s not too late! S20 got an email about sending in grades, but they aren’t out yet. Do you think he should tell Wisconsin, or they’ll know his grades aren’t out yet? Lots of kids from his school typically go, though they were almost all deferred this year. Does he self report the grades or does the school do it?
Thanks and good luck to all

@NYC2018nyc The email explains that the mid-term grades are self-reported through the portal. There should be a link for you on the site, now. My son is also waiting for his mid-term grades, but unless you won’t receive those until after 2/14 (the email’s stated deadline), I wouldn’t bother notifying admissions.

After self reporting my grades, should I then ask my school counselor to upload the mid-term report on common app?

Hey everyone! Can someone explain to me how to add addition achievements and honors to my application? I’ve been checking since I got deferred if something would pop up telling me where to update it, but nothing has. Thank you!

I noticed a change in the portal. Now it has a box for voting and voter registration. Did you guys see this, too? Deferred EA and still waiting to hear.

yes we see that too…idk that it means anything though…

Son officially declined Wisconsin today. Hope that opens up something for deferred.

Where is he going?

Final decision not made. Down to Penn State and Tennessee. If our visit goes well next weekend, it will likely be UTK. The fusion research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Tennessee’s connection to same, is a big draw. They’ve offered him a lot of money and invited him to the engineering honors program. Lack of bowling team is a negative, but can’t have everything I guess.
