Deferred U Mich Ann Arbor Class of 2021

@michiganb Um, yes you will be denied. My daughter got a similar response (with her GPA and info and they referenced only 1 AP) and she was denied the following week. If what she said her response is wrong, then correct it and fast.

great. They should have told me months ago.

my friend got in yesterday. 10 more days left everyone. we’ll all find out. they can’t tell us later than april 15th i’m positive on that.

according to this year they received about 60,000 applications, of which they’ll probably accept 16,000 (according to last years trends) and put another 10,000 on the waitlist. of the 16,000 i’m sure that 75% of the seats are already filled. but i’d still say for everyone left we have a 50/50 shot assuming we meet criteria but there may not be enough seats. these are predictions don’t attack me

after doing some searching i found that they basically look at essays and activities and involvement which gives them an idea of the type of student that person i academically first and then go on to look at gpa & test scores, 90% of apps move on to the second overlook of the application and im assuming they don’t straight up reject you unless you have under a 3.6. according to their stats people with as low as a 3.3 have gotten in assuming their other stuff was more exceptional. overall all i know is that they deferred way more people than why should have, which i have barely heard of any rejections and admissions at least of people that i know…

sent in app oct 18 it’s march 21 have not waited for something this long in my entire life to be completely honest

Since I also contacted the director, here’s my other reply email:

"Hi _______,

Thank you for your email and your continued interest in The University of Michigan. This information will be included with your application materials and given consideration as we continue to assess your candidacy during our regular decision review period. Have an excellent day and Go Blue!

Best,
Office of Undergraduate Admissions"

So same as @notapsycopath

Here’s what I got.
Hello ____,

Thank you for your continued interest in the University of Michigan. Please be assured that your interest has been noted.

Best,
Office of Undergraduate Admissions

This is so much more brief compared to anyone else’s on this thread.

i’m sure at least a quarter of people that are accepted right now only applied to michigan as their back up school and plane to go to someplace like uc berkeley or like john hopkins or something and have over a 4.5 gpa. they are taking up so many spots for people who are borderline right now it is truly is unfortunate. i wish they would just cancel their app once they get into their top school…

What everyone waiting has to hope is that with many other schools coming out March 30th through April 1st, a lot of candidates accepted to other schools will withdraw their applications to UM. I hope so, but I am a little doubtful because if those candidates have waited this long for an answer why not wait a little longer? Sad to say but some students like to pile up the letters like a badge of honor at the expense of students that are really passionate about their schools. When my D was accepted to her 2 top schools, I urged her to withdraw others to free up slots. It’s the right thing to do.

I agree with what you are all saying about it being the right thing to do to withdraw an app if you’re not planning on attending. However, if they paid the $75 they will want to know their answer since all schools are different.
In the ideal world, yes, everyone not attending would withdraw their application. Realistically, people are going to wait for the answer they paid money to hear.

They need to REALLY give more priority to those who sent in a LOCI as well as first semester senior year grades it shows that you’re still interested in the school and committed to keeping up your grades even after being deferred, as many people who got deferred may just not want to wait for their decision or won’t care as much and will go on to another school. U of M needs to be smart and pick those people who really want to go to this University…

@uofmfan uc berkeley is on the same level as umich and actually more expensive out of state than umich so i think ppl would choose umich over uc berkeley. also, they will withdraw their spots after the may 1 deadline thats the point of a waitlist. hang in there!

I sent a second LOCI on Sunday and this is the important part of what my admissions counselor sent back:

“Your application is still under consideration as we continue to form our freshman class – we are now wrapping up the final stages of application review, and will be releasing decisions within the first few weeks of April.”

So the bi-monthly trend they’ve set might be broken, as they’ll probably just release decisions in the beginning of April

I sent my first LOCI on Sunday and no responses from either the director or counselor. :frowning:

my friend last year got deferred, she had a 4.6 (weighted) GPA , got waitlisted, ended up going to the University of Florida (48% admission rate), now is prospering there as a freshman, got a 3.97 GPA first semester. hopefulness that everything works out even if you don’t got to U of M but still://

but uc berkely is much harder to get into, (17.5% acceptance vs 28% acceptance) not sure about the level they may be the same can’t speak on that…know someone who got accepted, can’t go due to it being 60K per year for her as it is out of state.

to be honest i think im gonna get waitlisted. is it worth it to lose your enrollment deposit to your #2 school u commit to… which i think is non refundable after may 1st… do most people get in from the waitlist?? and how early can u get off the waitlist. i dont understand how the waitlist works at all.

if people don’t know there is a chat option on U of M’s undergrad admissions website M-F from like 9am-5pm you can ask them any questions they respond super quick if you dont wanna e-mail or call them…

@uofmfan uc berkeley actually has around the same out of state acceptance rate as umich. the only reason uc berkeley has a lower acceptance rate than umich is because you can apply to as many uc schools as you want using one uc application all you have to do is check the boxes for the uc schools you want to send the app too but for umich you have to complete a umich specific application with essays which requires more effort than just adding uc berkeley onto the uc application list. if uc berkeley had its own application like umich, less people would apply because it requires more effort and it would have a higher acceptance rate. uc berkeley is less holistic than michigan. an in state student at my top 5 feeder school to michigan got into berkeley and ucla but waitlisted from umich with a 34 act and 3.9 gpa. umich is also pretty expensive for an out of state student but slightly cheaper than berkeley.
