Deferred U Mich Ann Arbor Class of 2021

Some acceptances went out today

Evidence?

Tomorrow midnight or the day after? Or is it more likely nothing until April now?

I heard, based on last year, that waitlists have been known to come out on April 1, so I’m praying more results come out this Thursday/Friday.

Oh my, my s is still waiting. This has been the worst experience ever and has left a terrible taste in my mouth for previously loved U of M…my husband and I have sacrificed so much to send or kids to private schools, in particular a “college prep” high school where s has been an outstanding student. All ap/honors classes, excellent gpa all 4 years. Weaker on extracurricular, due to passion for 1 sport. Could not get higher than a blessed 26 on the act-4 times. I’m sure he will be denied, but why not deny him back in December? This is a horrible way to spend senior year. He was offered 94000.00 to an out of state private college. He will not accept it, as he wants to attend a big university. When we visited u of m, he and I were both hesitant if it even was a right fit for him. Deep down, I know it isn’t. Yet, this school still has a hold on my child’s emotions, but more so mine! Never a spartan fan, but loved the vibe from MSU’s campus…mind boggling that my son will most likely be saying Go Green instead of Go Blue!!! At this point, I would love an acceptance from u of m, just so he can deny it…terrible I know. I know how important this is to so many of you, and it was to us at one point…a mama who needed to vent.

@Collegemama2017 I feel that. I, also, have thought about (if admitted) denying the acceptance right away as a way of protesting the admission system. Seems silly in the macro scale, but seems right in the micro.

@Collegemama2017 Hang in there!!! My S is down to waiting for his last two…Penn (March 30) and Michigan (who the heck knows when). Deferred way back when and then silence. Sent a letter of continued interest and received no response. He, too, is of the mindset of “you’re not going to take me so just ding me”. He hates making decisions but is finally working through it all in his head…most likely heading to McGill…unless unexpectedly Penn takes him. As I point out to him: there are lots and lots of good schools.

I’ve (mostly) learned to accept that this college admissions process is much more of a crapshoot than it was a generation ago. Not that I don’t yell at the computer screen about this stuff every once in a while!

@Collegemama2017 and @UofMorMSU I feel your pain. My daughter went through this two years ago. She was a high stat OOS kid. She thought Michigan was a lock. She was EA deferred and then languished in the regular admissions until the last Friday in March (8 month wait in total) :frowning: She got in. She was accepted to equivalent schools, as well as slightly lower ranked school with big scholarships, but chose Michigan. In summary, she loves it. Thriving…will intern at a FORTUNE 500 company this summer after just her sophomore year. My humble advice…don’t turn Michigan down simply out of spite if you get in. I wish you the best! Life rolls on and can be great whether you go to your number 1 or 2 school.

Sad really. Great, qualified kids in anguish over what should be slam dunk. Even if they get in there’s that decision of $60k for M vs $30-50 for possibly slightly less good schools. Every doctor I’ve talked to says if you want to be a doctor, go to the cheapest qualified U because they all teach the same classes.

As someone else said, it’s like a bad relationship…as soon as U of M says “yes”, my s would go running to them, lol! It bothers me lately (Im oversensitive because of situation) about the snob attitude some maize/blue die hards have, whether they actually attended or not. A co-worker who is aware of our situation made the comment MSU “will let anyone in,” when I told her my s was considering it. She didn’t even attend any college. The elite attitude is really starting to get to me because of this-making me a jealous crabapple!!! I love Tom Brady, go blue, lol!!! (I graduated from Wayne State though)changing my name to Bittermama2017.

many people don’t realize that going to U OF M means u have to keep up ur academics to their level. their classes are harder than normal in state schools…i know this bc i’ve talked to someone and their schooling is difficulty bc they know they accept the top of the students

Hey guys,

I do apologize for the lengthy post, but I would like to share everything about my application in hopes that someone in this thread would be in a similar situation. If anyone would like to share their opinion as well, that would be extremely helpful as well.

I am a legal Michigan resident, having been born and raised there for 16 years. However, due to my parent’s work shifting out of country temporarily, I was forced to move and apply from overseas. I am a self-declared in-state student, but the University of Michigan has listed me as an out of state student - which was quite irritating.

Anyhow, after being deferred in late-December, I wrote a Letter of Continued Interest (LOCI) to my regional counselor stating my passion and enthusiasm for studying at Michigan. I made sure to detail some noteworthy accomplishments, including being selected as one of the few people in the country to meet with the British Prime Minister for my outstanding social work. I received a general response, stating that my letter will be added to my file and the reason why I was deferred was due to the fact that my GPA and SAT was below the average Freshman admit to the school.

However, from what I’ve seen in past posts, the deferral letter that I got:

Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review. An official communication will be sent to your email address on file.
While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, your application remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early April, 2017.
Strong fall semester or trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward them when they become available. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require.
We hope your interest in Michigan continues. You have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful end of your senior year.

was supposed to be the “good one”. After seeing a some things on Reddit, it seems as though other students have gotten very different ones which had a more stern and direct tone to it. There were no mentions of “we are impressed with your achievements” and rather that only their grades need to be submitted. I am really not sure what to expect at this point - my counselor has also written again to the admissions officer stating my case and she said that she received a positive response but there was still some ambiguity - there was not assurance that I would get in. I am just so anxious about getting admitted. If not, MSU would be the next option I have in line.

Two of my friends were accepted two weeks ago, and I have still not heard back from my deferral. I’m and IB diploma student, NHS member, have traveled abroad to Europe and volunteered, been on mission trips, etc. while I do have a GPA that meets u of m standards, my test scores do not. I have legacy at the school as well, but at this point, I don’t have much confidence. University of Georgia is my next school in line.

UGA is my backup as well!

Has anyone’s link dissapeared?

I feel heartbroken every time I see my deferral letter.

Deferral is still there sadly

Please just end the suspense already and accept or reject! These yield games are cruel.

If this painful waiting makes my chance of acceptance increase, I’ll take it.

@Zpower99 It doesn’t…
