Rutgers has always had too many sports teams. They have never been able to adequately support them. Will the 1 mil be a permanent part of the budget? What happens next year when that money dries up? Better to put the money to academics.

This is where the money would be better spent: http://rutgers.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=642&tid=93745529&mid=93745529&sid=988&style=2

tsdad,

you mentioned “too many sports at Rutgers” at least once before. Given that you work in the field, would you be willing to say more about what constitutes “too many sports” for a college/university?

According to http://scarletknights.com/, Rutgers sponsors 27 varsity sports for men and women. USC has 18; Syracuse has 19; UCONN has 22; UNC Has 26, Oklahoma has 17; Pitt has 17; Penn State has 26; Florida has 18; Maryland has 27 (including competitive cheer for women); and so on. Here at Wisconsin we have 23.

The point is given the size of Rutgers and the money available, 27 sports is a ridiculous amount to sponsor.

tsdad,

Thanks!

Somebody needs to get the facts straight. According to RU they get $437 M from the state. Now maybe they are separating the NB campus funding from the rest to get the lower number. Confusing. President Mac is in a political pickle.

Annual state appropriations (FY07, $437 million) provide 31.8% of operating funds.
