Delaware Class of 2020 Acceptances

I’m now hearing that all Fall 2016 decisions will probably be released by Friday April 22nd.

If anyone is unhappy about this, I would suggest calling someone in the office of the UD Provost. Have a good weekend everyone.

It’s like getting wait-listed without being told you were wait-listed. In addition to being in limbo that much longer, the ones still waiting aren’t able to attend the Accepted Students Days. Doesn’t seem fair.

Investigator1 if you don’t mind me asking, where or whom did you hear this from?

ACCEPTED-heard back in Feb.

  1. Application Completed first week of December
  2. Regular admission
  3. Health Sciences College major
  4. 29 ACT score, 3.7 GPA, no rank
  5. 7 Adv. courses taken in HS.
  6. Top 2 schools (between this and another completely different school)

Good luck to everyone and keep hopeful and patient!

Does anyone know if there is a FB group yet? Or when one will be created. I am excited to meet new students and find a roommate.

For those still waiting to hear - check your portal as some were updated last night. D was wait listed. Very disappointing after waiting 18 weeks for decision.

S was also wait listed after 18+ weeks. Now we have to cram visits to other schools with offers into next 2 weekends, as UDel was his first choice AND not even a reach school, numerically speaking, and he’s a legacy! Assume it had to do with both the large number of applicants and his choice of major (Chem Eng). Have to wonder about what is going on behind the scenes at a University that can’t get its act together for admissions; other schools get similar (overwhelming) numbers of applicants and manage to get responses out that don’t arrive at 7pm on a Friday night (yay weekend) - the last official date (the admissions website still lists April 1!)

Son waitlisted. Lucky he had already visited Denison and loved it and they were VERY generous with merit aid. U Del was not a reach but he was looking for Comp Sci which makes it a more competitive placement.

My son wait listed as well. Since it is his first choice, he is opting to stay on the wait list and will send a deposit in at his 2nd choice.
The letter posted to his portal states they “generally” place about 4,0000 students on the wait list and offer admission to about 200. That information is seems to contradict the information put on this thread by poster mwallenmd, who seems to be very knowledgeable about UDel and their processes. On many occasions mwallenmd has said that the past 2 years UDel has taken exactly zero students from the wait list. So, If mwallenmd is still reading posts on this thread, I would like to know if he/she thinks the numbers put forth in the letter are just a way to entice students to stay on the wait list with some kind of false hope? Or if he/she believes that there actually might be more of a chance (albeit small) this year than in the past two years.

For the last 2 years UD did offer waitlist placement but no one was offered admission from it. There was due to the fact that too many OOS students accepted offers and decided to attend UD and UD ended up with freshman classes larger than they really wanted. You might think that they would have addressed this issue this year by offering less acceptances overall to begin with, but I don’t think anyone has a reliable answer whether they did this or not. The bottom line is it still would depend on the number of students who submit deposits to attend by May 1. I suspect the 4000 number they gave you is the number of applicants that they plan on offering waitlist placement to , not the actual number that will accept waitlist placement.

I can give you some figures from 2012 and 2013. In 2012 2502 students were offered waitlist placement, 928 accepted placement, and 640 were offered admission (189 decided to attend). In 2013 2634 students were offered waitlist placement, 1196 accepted placement on the waitlist, and 768 were offered acceptance (162 decided to attend UD). Whether these figures have any comparative value for this year is anyone’s guess. I wish I had some more positive info to give you. However there is no chance at all if a student decides not to even accept the waitlist placement offer. Good luck. I really hope that this year UD will be able to take at least some students in off the waitlist.

Thank you for that info.
So, for 2014 and 2015, can you provide the numbers of how many students were offered a spot on the wait list and how many accepted placement.
I understand 0 were subsequently offered admission, but I’m curious about the 1st two numbers. Thanks again!!

For 2014 3689 students were offered waitlist placement and 1549 accepted placement on it. Unfortunately none were subsequently offered admission. I do not have any figures for last year, sorry. Again good luck to your son.

@Mwallenmd Did you work in admissions at U Del? Where is your info from?

I just received my acceptance on April 1st for Biomedical engineering. I’m in state, act 35, sat 2170, 10 aps and overall pretty good stats. I applied to the honors program but haven’t received any information on whether I got in or not. I’m wondering if there is still a chance for me to get in?

My son was also wait listed after a 20 week deliberation. I would be careful about the waitlist. I read the same stats as Mwallenmd in one of the college review books, can’t recall if it was Fiske or Princeton Review but there were no waitlist offers for the last two years. My guess is this is for the non restricted majors where they have some capacity. For anyone scanning this for general admission info for next year, my son applied to 10 schools including 3 small private schools, and the others large D1 universities. Pitt had the best admissions process of the public schools. Very engaged, helpful, and I thought put more emphasis on character. Guess who was the worst! While it has been frustrating, I am glad my son is not going to Udel. I think its admissions process is a sign of poor management or resources which will impact other areas.

You come get loads of official data about UD from “University of Delaware Common Data Set” which is where I obtained the data I listed in my previous posts. Just type it in your browser and go to the website. It is broken down by academic years.

Sorry you guys didn’t hear back…

Yes UD needs to fix something, but there are other schools that haven’t gotten all their admission notices out. My dd is still waiting on one (not UD) and I think giving up cause they are saying mid April. That leaves little time to go there etc when its 8 hr away.

Also I recall one school in the past ( I think an IVY or top eng school) sent out acceptances that were not suppose to go out…major computer error. Cant recall the details…

If you are wait listed, and who knows if there are openings, you can always send anther letter of recommendation in. This was recommended for my son in the past at another school. His teacher happened to be an alumni. It was his first choice school. Unfortunately, they took no one off the wait list that year, but you never know…cause if it comes down between a few people for a certain major then this could make a difference. I don’t think everyone going to decision day has a 100 percent decision on going to UD.

Also I would call and make sure they have all your info and nothing is missing in case this is holding things up. WHile they look up your file, tell them to make note that its your #1 school. Maybe they will make a note of that for whomever makes the decision.

Hopefully UD will change things. They didn’t have the rolling admissions when one my kids went there several yrs ago. And I didn’t know about this time till I saw it on CC. Although I don’t know if they consider it rolling since it takes a long time to roll out those admits.

Good Luck

Does anyone have tips on successfully requesting reconsideration for merit aid?

Let’s be brutally honest here, if you are waitlisted, then the University essentially is hoping that you go elsewhere. In reality it makes things much easier for everyone (the student and the University). Nothing wrong with this, I get it. If waitlisted, cut ties, move on, and accept the offer at the “other” college and possibly apply as a transfer candidate at some point in the future.

The problem I have with U of D Admissions is that they imply one thing, but execute a different plan, and this unfair to the student. This comes directly from the U of D site with regard to Freshman applicants…“Please be aware that an initial admission response is typically made 8 to 12 weeks after all application materials are received.” Clearly, this should be changed to “you’ll receive a decision before April 1st.” (or something along those lines). Don’t string the student along for 16-25 weeks.

As I’ve stated before, nothing will be changed until you contact the Provost department at U of D.

Good luck to everyone.

@Investigator1 I completely disagree with you about just “moving on” and applying as a transfer candidate at some point in the future. I know many people from my high school who were waitlisted in previous years and were admitted. Same goes for last year candidates although the school said they did not “accept” anyone off the waitlist I know 2 students who were admitted off it and did attend. There is always hope. Good luck everyone, even if you are waitlisted there is always a chance of being admitted.
