Denied from WashU ED1. Looking for ED2 and RD options. [KY resident, 3.93, TO, BME or Biochem, <$30k]

Demographics: Asian male, Kentucky resident, public schools and no hooks.

Location/Region: Kentucky, I won’t mind going out of state.

Major: BME or Biochem

GPA/Test Scores: 3.93 UW/ and 4.08 W (currently a 4.86 and will probably average to like a 4.5 at the end of the year, just couldn’t take many weighted classes)

AP Lang: 3

APWH: 4

APCSP: Taking this year

APUSH: Taking this year.

IB Physics: Taking this year.

IB Chem: Taking this year.

IB HL AA: Taking this year.

All classes are either advanced, honors or AP/IB (no regular classes). I have one B from middle school on my transcript and one B in a honors class during freshmen year.

ECs/Awards: Self learnt SQL/ABAP, self learnt Hindi, robotics team and club for 2 years, HOSA, Chess team and club, some volunteer hours (around 40) , shadowed a doctor for around 20ish hours, quick recall team, house chores and helped the development of a roblox game with 45 million visits.
Leadership positions include Chess Team Captain and Robotics Team leader.
Awards include a student of the year award in my APWH class, BLS certification, 2nd place at state for HOSA and rho kappa. (I lack awards tbh)

Curriculum: Such as: I would prefer a good premed program.

Schools I’m looking at: N/A LF ED2

Additional: I would prefer schools that have good research opportunities, would appreciate any colleges to ED/EA to. My ECS aren’t the greatest and lack leadership imo.

Costs: 20-30k a year

Essays/LORs: Essay would be a 7/10, wrote about how chess is like life (niche), LORs should be good though, one from my APWH teacher (10/10, she is also the ap coordinator), one from my HL teacher (10/10, she is good with me), and one from my counselor (8/10).

Would prefer a good premed program and small size

SAT/ACT ? Is your budget $20-30, including room and board? If it is it may be challenging to find something OOS given that R&B is usually $11+. You might want to look at schools that offer OOS tuition waivers for select students to bring the cost down.

Do you intend to submit SAT or ACT score results?

No I’m test optional

Would consider University of Miami. Quite expensive, but they give scholarships to some students and you would be a contender. I wouldn’t suggest ED2 since cost of living is so high and scholarship might be necessary.

Condolences on your ED1 rejection, I feel your pain unfortunately…

Test optional, and I’m probably gonna stay in a condominium separately

For a relatively nearby suggestion, look into Denison.

Many schools require you to live on campus for at least a year. And who pays for the condominium? And food? These things cost money also.

Wash U engineering has a guarantee transfer program with many LAC in a 3+2 programs. Have you considered that?

Only requirement is keeping a 3.25 GPA for 3 years while at the LAC.

Then I saw “premed”… My advice is go to an instate U and save some money. WashU UG plus private med school is going to set you back $600k.

You need to apply to a school where you can make budget.

So you need to look at the NPCs of schools like Miami, RPI, RIT, Lehigh, Illinois Tech and more.

Then you need a safety that will 100% make your budget - like UAH or Truman State.

And a school that may make budget like SUNY ESF or Geneseo.

Who is on your list now that’s a safety and affordable ? That is the most important school - not the WUSTLs of the world.

Good luck.

So it’s late in the game. You are in KY but would you consider the Northeast?

Some good/affordable options

  • TCNJ is $40k total (tuition+R&B) for out of state. They are considered the NJ state honors college, they have STEM majors including BME, and they even have a medical program so the pre-med path is well established. The campus is near Princeton.

  • SUNY Geneseo - the small SUNY schools are even cheaper. For example, Geneseo is 35k total. This is the small LAC honors college for the SUNY system. It’s very rural and in the middle of the state between Rochester and Buffalo. There are a bunch of other smaller SUNY LACs like Oneonta.

  • SUNY has four large, well-regarded flagship campuses with strong STEM Programs. these are more expensive. U of Buffalo is the engineering college. U of Albany and Stony Brook are the update and downstate medical centers. SUNY Binghamton is fairly competitive for admissions and it might be too late. Not sure.

Saint Louis University. Excellent for pre med, many undergrad research opportunities. Also, check out SLU’s Medical Scholars Program - deadline has passed, but you could apply as a freshman for program as a sophomore. My D24 received $37k/yr merit making tuition plus room & board roughly 30k/yr. (3.9W, TO, lots of ec’s, bz school, 7 AP).

If you must ED, in view of your budget, you should go with great quality schools with good science facilities/location and strong merit aid programs. In the Midwest, Macalester and Denison come to mind.

Plenty of super smart kids in KY who want to go to med school stay in state for UL or UK for undergrad. Have you applied to Transy and Centre?

U of Louisville is an obvious safety here. They have a great BME program (along with the Kentucky Spinal Cord institute) and a med school. I’ve heard wonderful things about the honors program, and that would give you a smaller cohort. Their engineering school has ~2000 undergrad enrollment, while WashU has ~1500.

Check out Mizzou as well. You’d get automerit, plus a little more for living in a border state. Their engineering is bigger at ~2700 students.

Dayton gives good merit and guarantees costs for 4 years. Their engineering enrollment is ~1700. All these schools offer honors to give an even smaller feeling.
