Anybody watch this show? I heard a couple of days ago that it’s been cancelled. Last night was the season finale, which of course was filmed a few months ago. Cliffhangers left and right. I guess we won’t ever get to find out if President Kirkman wins reelection. It’s a show with a totally preposterous premise but I loved the cast.
I started watching when the show started because I’m a Sutherland fan and I know a lot of people who worked on the show. After four or five episodes, I stopped because it was just too preposterous. And I say that, knowing that I love Scandal, probably the most preposterous show to ever be on tv! The problems that the show had with the showrunners affected the direction and the ratings in the most recent season weren’t good. It’s a shame because, being filmed here in Toronto, a lot of Canadians got good work for the run.
I have a few shows I have to hold my breath on that were preposterous that I liked - namely Timeless. I did actually like that one even though the time traveling piece - which I can go there for the sake of fun - but the continuity with what would change with time travel bothered me - why not go back to the day they left in the machine for one.
Oh, that’s too bad. We still have to catch up on some of this season, but we like the show. I just Googled it and see that Netflix is talking to the show’s producers about picking it up.
I don’t think the show knew what it wanted to focus on. I enjoyed the first season, but this season went in too many different directions to keep my interest.
@shellfell I totally agree about too many tangents this season.
So disappointing. We actually watched a few shows this year. One was absolutely stellar - The Brave. Far superior to that nonsensical Seal Team, that has the 50 year old lead character and far too many camera cuts. Cancelled. Literally the best drama on TV in the last 20 years and it’s cancelled.
Designated Survivor and Timeless, both better than average fare by far, both canceled. Meanwhile, we have absolute garbage that continues.
NO! I really liked the plot twist at the end - the picture Hannah saw. I thought that could be a very interesting story line.
@TranquilMind Timeless hasn’t been officially cancelled. Yet.
NBC has not announced whether it will be renewed or cancelled. Last news I saw, NBC, the showrunners and Sony (which owns the production company) were still in negotiations. I think everyone is trying to avoid a repeat of last year’s embarrassing cancellation announcement followed 3 days later by a renewal announcement.
So, Timeless’s season 3 status —> unknown (but not looking good)
I’m still shocked that The Brave was canceled. It was edge-of-your-seat pulse-pounding excitement. The best show I have seen in 20 years, easily.
Here’s an explanation about Designated Survivor’s demise I read about a couple days ago.

I stopped watching that show after Season 1, but I’m a big Timeless fan and hope it will return. I hoped Rise would return as well, but that didn’t happen, so I’m not too hopeful.
NBC has officially cancelled Timeless today, but… there may be 2 hour TV movie finale in the works

Side note: as someone who also likes timeless and is waiting on a decision… I HIGHLY recommend the show 12 Monkeys. It’s Timeless but with better characters and writing imo.
We’ve DVR’d almost all of the shows mentioned but we usually run out of gas on them after a couple of seasons. They get too repetitious, too political, or the story arc gets overly convoluted. We enjoyed 12 Monkeys at the beginning but lost interest, I think, after they started with multiple instances of the same person existing at one time (not young+old but same age).
The most disappointing series of all? Has to be SyFy’s Caprica, the prequel to Battlestar Galactica. It had an excellent story arc: billionaire scientist driven mad by the death of his teenage daughter, so he creates humanoid Cyclons and tries to download her virtual world existence into one to get her back physically – the androids become widespread over the years then rebel, killing nearly everyone. Instead of sticking to the arc, the show went off on a goofy Mafia tangent, indulged in already-beat-to-death Hollywood issues, and went nowhere. What a waste.
We liked Designated Survivor. So of course it was canceled. We liked Timeless, so of course it is in danger.
I still can’t believe they terminated The Brave, the best show I have seen in probably my entire adult life, and right after a major character had just been shot! Worst decision ever, NBC.
They only seem to keep the sophomoric programs full of gratuitous sex, political indoctrination, filthy language, or torture scenes on TV. Whoever is making these decisions is doing it all wrong.
^^That’s because you’re in the wrong demographic group. You’re too old & too set in your buying habits to be a desirable viewer for commercial sponsors.
TV shows want to appeal to younger viewers, who are harder to attract as an audience and represent the target group advertisers are trying to appeal to.
Also a lot of renewal decisions are based on the presence or absence of vertical integration. Networks strongly prefer programming that is produced in-house by a production studio owned by the network. Licensing fees are lower for in-house production plus the network owns the property so they can license it to other media outlets (Netflix, Hulu, overseas networks, etc) and profit that way.
Part of Timeless’s problem is that it’s produced & owned by Sony, but airs on NBC, owned by GE-Comcast.
WayOutWest:
My buying habits are pretty much the same as they always were, even when I was young.
The irony is that I have the money to buy now, so don’t be pitching that garbage to me and expecting me to support your program or network. Go after my kids but you won’t get them either. We’ve raised them to be able to easily distinguish and sort out indoctrination and emotional manipulation and dismiss it.
Young viewers are typically - but not always - easier to indoctrinate. But they don’t have any money! Even less so, now that so many are in hock up their their eyeballs for school loans.
You are correct that it is always about the money though. I do still think there is an audience for decent programming. These easily indoctrinated teens and young adults are going to have kids and then they will see what they have been pitched and I hope, do something about it.
@TranquilMind I share your disappointment regarding the cancellation of The Brave . It was a great show.
I think those who make decisions about what continues vs what gets buts have a tough time figuring out whom to target. On the one hand, they need the folks they target to have disposable income. When our kids were young and when they were in college, we didn’t have much disposable income. Many young folks graduating from college similarly are pretty buried in loans/debt. Who does that leave? The very young whose folks buy for them and the wealthier folks who are done paying their kids’ ed expenses. The latter group is often ignored and the focus seems to be the 30-40 age group. Sorry, I really didn’t have much cash at that age.
Anyway, back to Designated Survivor. I’m sorry, haven’t watched it.
Timeless was almost killed last season but was brought back by a strong fan campaign. The ratings apparently didn’t improve this year so it’s not surprising that it hasn’t been renewed.
Unfortunately, I think that probably most of us have favorite shows that have suffered the same fate over the years. Facing competition with a lot of excellent programming on Netflix, etc., the networks are having a difficult time capturing viewers the way they used to be able to do.
