Hi we are travelling to Detroit next week and were hoping for any suggestions on things to do, good restaurants. Sadly no Ball games will be happening, but I was hoping to take in some walking tours which have the major landmarks and Greektown, Foxtown and getting on the People mover. DH would like to take in all things automotive. Really grateful for any suggestions. We have one week and are splitting that time between Windsor and Detroit using the Ambassador bridge.
Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village in Dearborn are musts, but the museum especially for automotive history.
More suggestions:
See a baseball game at comerica park
Visit the belle isle aquarium, DIA, Detroit historical museum, motown museum
Visit the Yankee air museum at the old bomber plant in Ypslanti
Visit the Ford Piquette plant (old factory now museum)
Visit the rouge plant where they build the F-150. Leaves from GF village.
Visit Ann Arbor.
Visit Ann Arbor - if you think you will, we can leave suggestions - only 1/2 hour-ish away down 1-94.
The food scene is starting to get some attention. If you are on Instagram follow The Detroit Tour for some pics and suggestions of great food.
Eastern Market is WINNING.
Henry Ford and Greenfield are a must for your H. Also consider the Cranbrook Institute of Science. https://science.cranbrook.edu/
Lots of great middle eastern food.
Sister Pie !!! http://sisterpie.com/
Note: Southbound 1-75 is closed near Rouge River bridge - so anything a little south of downtown is difficult on 75.
Oh, AND VISIT ANN ARBOR!!! ![]()
See if you can find a pasty shop and try one…
Lots of Greektown visitors stop at this bakery - good luck making a choice.
I’ve been there but its been quite a while. Astoria: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g42139-d389642-Reviews-Astoria_Pastry_Shop-Detroit_Michigan.html
Most of the big ones have been hit. Greenfield Village & Henry Ford is an all day thing IMO.
Buddy’s Pizza is my favorite. When my dad’s dad or brothers come visit, that is always our first stop.
Don’t get your expectations up for the people mover.
I don’t know if they let people in when there isn’t a show but the Fox Theater is gorgeous inside.
If you’re going to be in casinos at all, I highly recommend going when you’re in Windsor instead. Smoking is banned over there. (ok I know this isn’t a big deal to many but I despise smoke so it’s a big deal to me.)
I think Ann Arbor is overrated
I haven’t done this yet, but my niece was raving about the Q-Line - maybe a better sub than the people mover??

As everyone has said, try middle eastern food in Detroit. Yum!
I don’t know about pasty’s in Detroit, I think they are more of a UP thing. I personally (and my whole family) detests them so they wouldn’t be a thing for us.
All things automotive means The Henry Ford for sure! The Rouge plant tour would be a hit.
There are so many great restaurants & bars in Detroit now … do some online searching to find places that have food that interests you.
Campus Martius area is great, and since the weather should be beautiful, it will be hopping. Walk the Riverfront. Check out Belle Isle. Ride the Q Line (it’s free right now, so I hear there can be lines), and the People Mover for the areas that aren’t on the Q. Go to the Detroit Institute of Art. Check out these links: https://www.thrillist.com/lifestyle/detroit/the-most-beautiful-places-in-detroit ; https://www.thrillist.com/lifestyle/detroit/30-things-to-do-in-detroit-under-10 .
If you are an architecture or art buff, head to the fancy suburb of Bloomfield Hills & visit Cranbrook - you can do a self-guided tour (http://www.cranbrookartmuseum.org/tours/self-guided-outdoor-sculpture-tours/). Cranbrook Art Museum has a fabulous Alexander Girard exhibition right now.
Have a great visit!
Thanks everyone!! I’ll have a great trip now for certain! I’m really looking forward to this.
The Heidelberg Project is super interesting and unique to Detroit. Not sure what the status is, as part of it is or has been dismantled. https://www.heidelberg.org/
The main branch of the Detroit Public Library is gorgeous inside. And check out a couple of the local breweries if you like beer!
I also highly recommend Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. Ann Arbor is a pretty town if you want to get out of the city one day, it isn’t far. Bloomfield Hills is also lovely.
I have to ask why you’re planning on visiting Windsor. As a Canadian, I don’t know anyone who would have that on their places to see list.
IF you go to Ann Arbor…(not sure what your taste are but I’ll suggest some things…)
- walk central campus of U of M - be sure to go in the Law Library!
- The Matthaei Botanical Gardens
- Zingerman’s Deli on Detroit St (not to be confused with the other Z properties) - the sandwiches are AMAZING but expensive - but the whole place is worth walking through to taste cheeses, breads, oils/vinegars, etc. - we often will not have lunch but will just wander and then split a dessert : I recommend the Hummingbird Cake!
- If you like browsing antiques/old stuff, a 5 minute walk from ZIngerman’s, TREASURE MART.
- Also very close to Zingerman’s is Kerrytown - a small quaint shopping experience. If you like paper products, be sure to stop in Hollanders.
- For lunch/dinner: Frita Batidos - not fancy, but DELICIOUS cuban food.
You can spend a few hours or a whole day in Ann Arbor.
Hi @alwaysamom my DD is at the U there. We are going to see her first then off to see DS who is working in Boston this summer where we haven’t been for years. DH is looking forward to touring the distilleries in Windsor
Assuming of course that you know you need a passport for Windsor. Better save than sorry to tell you that!
Detroit Institute of Arts–especially the murals of Diego Riveria.
How was the visit?
Hi the visit has been great!! Today we are going to Ann Arbor. It took 2 days to see the Henry Ford , the Rouge plant and Greenfield. All were great!! The Motown museum tour was excellent! They are getting another 50 million to expand. And the Detroit Institute of art was incredible! I had no idea of the number of masterpieces- Bruegels, Van Gogh, The Nightmare, and the murals of Rivera! We’ve also been walking around downtown, checking out the Guardian building and the public art. Thanks everyone for the recommendations!!
