I spent the last two evenings binge watching this show, which ran for six half-hour episodes through the end of December and is available for a limited time on HBO on Demand. It’s a re-make of a British series, a dark comedy set in an extended care facility for the female elderly, and is absolutely wonderful. The acting is phenomenal–Laurie Metcalfe of Roseanne fame plays the doctor unhappily in charge of the unit, and she and every other actor on the show do superlative work. I can’t ever remember seeing such rich character development in a TV series, especially a comedy. It’s had me almost falling off my chair with laughter a few times and also brought me to tears more than once.

For whatever reason, HBO gave the show zero promotion, so I’m trying my best to spread the word in hopes that it’ll be renewed. If you have access to HBO programming, please take a look at this little jewel. (For those with looong TV memories, be on the lookout for “Millie Helper” as one of the patients.)

Perfect description. I enjoyed it a lot and hope we get a second season. Terrific acting with a wonderful cast, some well-known, some not. I highly recommend it.

Enjoying this show, especially since my mother has been in rehab for a month, after breaking her pelvis in many places.
it is well acted and I hope it gets renewed. Don’t know why there hasn’t been more PR, because it tackles issues our aging society needs to address, and while quirky, and " over the top" it’s worth viewing !!

The best “sleeper” show on TV. I was absolutely hooked, and was very sad when it ended. The characters were twistedly rich on so many levels, the acting superb, and the plots interesting. I agree, the setting can hit home for people our age.

You can keep your Homeland, your The Wire, your Breaking Bad, even your Downton Abbey (sorry, I don’t watch soap operas). I’ll take Getting On.

I tried watching it but could not make it past the first fifteen or so minutes. It’s horrible. It’s not as bad as Hello Ladies but it is pretty bad. I am glad someone likes it but is definitely not my cup of tea.

razorsharp, since the first 15 minutes of the first episode was, ahem, rather fecally focused, I can only assume that you were offended by the subject matter and frank language. (But did you make it to the translation scene? Maybe the funniest thing I’ve ever seen on TV.) I can understand that bodily function humor might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but beyond that, it is astonishing to me that anyone could think the show is “horrible”. Alex Borstein (the voice of Lois on Family Guy) is a wonder to behold. Niecy Nash’s performance is impeccable. The send-up of workplace bureaucracy is spot-on. And you gotta love a show that offers employment to so many elderly actresses!

I love this show too. It was a little tough to get into especially with my two young adult sons, but once we did, we were all hooked. I was so surprised at what a terrific actor Neicy Nash is, as well as all the other actors on this show.

Bumping this topic to comment on season two, which is two episodes in. Still loving every minute! The parade of actresses “of a certain age” who are showing up–most recently Betty Buckley and Jean Smart (who had a very poignant scene) is icing on the cake, as the series regulars continue to shine. If you have HBO, give it a try. You won’t be disappointed. This little black comedy has some of the best acting you’ll ever see on the small screen, and each episode manages to make me laugh, cry and cringe, sometimes simultaneously.
