Did atrocious on the SAT; SAT Optional Suggestions?

The counselor making fun of me really didn’t bother me. She didn’t say my name, but everyone knows me as the kid who is “applying to 16 colleges”. Fellow peers and teachers think I am pretty crazy and I usually have to explain why I am applying to so many schools each and every day, but it will be all worth it in the end, hopefully!

I actually ended up just having a phone interview with Ursinus. I’ve had in person interviews in Atlanta with: Earlham College, Hobart and William Smith, Ohio Wesleyan, College of Wooster, Knox College, and Sarah Lawrence. I’ve had skype interviews with: Allegheny, Lawrence (started out as one, but connection didn’t work for her), Juniata, Hiram, and Wheaton. I’ve had phone interviews with: Ursinus and Flagler. Pretty much 13 out of the 16 schools I’m applying to.

Knox’s decision is actually already in the mail and I should be hearing from Juniata pretty soon along with GCSU. Yes, an admission officer added me on facebook and I ended up “ignoring” it. You can check out my thread I started on it, I didn’t know what to do.

I have been following this thread and I am very happy for you! You are pretty amazing earlycollege and your initiative and determination will get you far. You already know that you and my daughter are applying to several of the same colleges (Hiram, Lawrence, OWU, Earlham, College of Wooster, ) so maybe we will meet you someday!

Looking forward to further updates.
Oh, and she is applying to 14 colleges so don’t feel bad, you do what you need to do. Don’t let anything get to you!

I would love to meet you and your daughter one day, mspearl.

Does anyone know anything about Cornell College in Iowa? I know it may be a bit late to add schools, but I just read on their website that they offer a $15,000 scholarship per year for theater. I could probably meet their EA deadline which is December 1st.

DD was interested in Cornell College. Good school that frequently gets mixed up with Cornell U. They have a block scheduling policy in which you take one class at a time for a couple of weeks. If that isn’t for you I’d forget about it.

I decided I am going to apply there, call me crazy but I actually had 17 schools on my list before I dropped Valdosta State. I actually like the block scheduling. Hiram has a unique plan with a 3 week block system after the normal semester.

Just got the acceptance letter in the mail today from Knox College. I received $10,000 in scholarships per year.

Performing Arts Scholarship: $4,000
Knox Founders Scholarship: $4,000
Knox Writers’ Scholarship: $2,000
Total: $10,000 per year

I can’t believe I’ve had three acceptances in two weeks, lol. I have been admitted to the following thus far:
Knox College
Hiram College
Ursinus College
Lenior-Rhyne U

PS- I also got the official written letter for Hiram.

GREAT! Well, at least I didn’t get rejected. I was suppose to find out Monday, but they already posted my status. UGH!!! I know there is only ONE reason that I got deferred and that’s because of my SAT scores.

It says: Deferred to January

“Deferred to January means the application has been deferred to our regular admission process which will begin in January and continue until April 1 or until the freshman class is full. Applications are deferred to the regular process to give the Admissions Committee more time to thoroughly evaluate the student’s credentials. Decisions will be based on the strength of the academic curriculum, grade point average, SAT or ACT test scores and essay, as compared to the rest of the applicant pool. During this time, students are encouraged to submit first semester grades from their high school, any new SAT or ACT test score results and any other items they feel will be helpful in the review of their application (resume of activities, letters of recommendation, etc.).”

I called and ask why and they wouldn’t tell me. I know it’s my SAT Scores and I’m not taking my SAT again. I’ve already taken it twice. I can send another letter of recommendation, so I may ask my new French teacher. I told my old French teacher to send it to GCSU and she said the email didn’t work. It didn’t work for my old language arts teacher, so I had her resend it. My old french teacher didn’t resend it when I asked her to. I will send them my first semester senior grades as well, but I don’t see what else I can do. I’m just aggravated how I get deferred from GCSU when all the other colleges I’ve been accepted to our much better institutions. It’s just because the SATs are weighted more heavily. “Holistic” review my ass. Well, at least I didn’t get rejected, ugh…

The good news is that out of the 17 colleges, it is the one I want to go to least but it’s the only instate school with reasonable tuition. I’m really not going to apply anywhere else in Georgia, maybe it’s God telling me it’s not meant for me to stay in this state…

Its not likely that an additional LOR will make a difference. Things like additional awards received since the application was submitted or improved grades/GPA are what they are likely looking for.

I don’t feel like it was my grades/GPA because its in the mid-50% of admitted students. It was obviously my test scores which were lower then the mid-50%, but I have friends at GCSU and they didn’t even take AP classes. I’m not going to retake the SAT for the 3rd time. My reading/math stayed exactly the same the second time and the writing went up 70 points.

What is GCSU?

*.edit, I see it is Georgia College

Georgia College and State U. It’s Georgia’s public LAC. It was the only school I applied to in Georgia…

You misunderstand, ec. For most schools, when you get deferred that means your current application, in totality, is not currently strong enough. You have to show improvement SOMEWHERE to get them to see a continued upward trend to consider accepting rather than denying your application. If you are weak in one area, you need to demonstrate even stronger, improved abilities in another area. So even if you think your grades are ok, they should be BETTER in this first school semester then they were when you applied to overcome the weak SAT scores. If you have won any award or gotten any commendation since you applied, that should also be reported. Another LOR is probably not sufficient.

My GPA will go up after this semester. My average right now for this semester is a 94%, so hopefully that will be enough to be admitted. It will probably go down a little bit due to finals, but my GPA should be back to a 3.4 at least. Should I even bother asking my new French teacher for a LOR or will it not do anything? I am just having trouble believing my improvement in grades will be the only factor in my acceptance. I understand what your saying, but I do not think that was the main factor I got deferred. I hope my grades itself will be enough to get admitted. I have not won any awards or anything recently. But on the bright side, it isn’t a top choice at all. It’s just affordable.

If you don’t care about GCSU, then don’t waste your time with an update. If it is still in the running (given your other acceptances, and assuming they are in your budget) then send anything you think will STRENGTHEN your application. If a LOR will not be STELLAR, don’t send it.

And no, I don’t think you should be adding more schools to your list at this point. You have plenty.

I only care about GCSU because it is my financial safety (not an academic safety obviously). I do not know if my other schools will be affordable until I get each individual financial aid package, but out of 17 schools I’m sure one will be affordable. My father is refusing to let me apply to Sarah Lawrence, so I added the College of Holy Cross instead. I also am applying to Cornell College instead of Valdosta. It’s the same number as before, I just replaced two of the schools.

Regarding deferment: They’re not going to care about LOR’s. They want to see an increase in GPA and an increase in your SAT/ACT score. If you want to continue pursuing this college option, you should try the SAT/ACT again. Without an increase it scores and a big jump in GPA in core subjects, it may be time to get one more app out to another academic and financial safety.

Did you ever get an idea of what your family can/will pay each year and how that matches up with your EFC?

It is really important to have a financial safety. Figure out another financial option in case GCSU does not accept you. Jym has very good advice about doing what you can to get into GCSU. Just do not count on this school. FWIW, my older son was deferred at 2 schools, and he never made any attempt to strengthen his applications. Both schools accepted him. One was a private U and the other was an OOS public U. The private one even offered quite a generous merit scholarship with the acceptance (Go figure, but I know it was tuition discounting. It was not because he deserved it). That said, if you wish to be accepted, do not do what my son did, meaning NOTHING.

You need a financial safety acceptance in your hand. Focus your energy on getting one.

I don’t agree that improved performance is necessary to be competitive in the regular round after a deferral. Colleges sometimes just want to see that you are continuing to perform well in senior year courses, which are usually more challenging than junior year.
